WOMEN'S ATHLETICS LEAGUE AND CUP
The new Women's Athletics League and the Iberdrola Queen's Cup are underway
The agreement between the company and the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) is a boost for the development of this sport.
IBERDROLA QUEEN'S CUP
In January, the new Iberdrola Women's Athletics League and the Iberdrola Queen's Cup were presented to the National Sports Council in Madrid. Both initiatives are part of Iberdrola's new impulse to women's athletics as part of the Women's Universe program.
The ceremony was presided over by the General Director of the National Sports Council, Jaime González; accompanied by the president of the RFEA, Raúl Chapado; Iberdrola representatives and a representative from each of the 16 clubs participating in the 2018 Iberdrola Division of Honour League.
"We are firmly committed to women's sport. We are here because one of Iberdrola's fundamental pillars is female empowerment and gender equality," said representatives from Iberdrola.
RECOGNITION FOR IBERDROLA'S SUPPORT FOR WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Raúl Chapado, president of the RFEA, highlighted the importance of this agreement with Iberdrola, "which goes far beyond the financial aspect. It's about raising the profile of women's athletics. It will give greater visibility to Spanish female athletes' achievements to inspire more and more girls to take up this sport." According to Chapado, athletics is "the sport of sports, and the Olympic discipline par excellence. We are a very inclusive sport, we don't exclude anybody. The role of women is very advanced and athletics has always been at the forefront in the fight for equal rights for women."
Finally, Jaime González, from the National Sports Council, said that "we are here today to put the spotlight on one of our most loved and most important public policies; promoting the role of women in sport. This isn't about being trendy, it's about justice. Fortunately, sport stopped being an exclusively male activity a long time ago and we are now in a completely new phase, which is raising awareness of this among society."
