Iberdrola Guerreras League, a dream come true for women's handball

The Women's Handball League is the most important club competition held in Spain. It started in the 1952-53 season and, after a number of name changes (First Division, ABF League, Honour Division...), it became the Iberdrola Guerreras League in 2016.

On 13 September 2017, the Spanish Royal Handball Federation and Iberdrola presented their project for the Iberdrola Guerreras League, which is the new name for the women's handball first division in Spain, to the Higher Council for Sport (CSD). A total of 14 teams will compete to win the league over a total of 26 rounds.

The presentation ceremony for the Iberdrola Guerreras League was attended by Jaime González, general director of the CSD; Francisco V. Blázquez, president of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation; Raquel Blanco, director of Marketing and Products at Iberdrola; Yolanda García, director of Sports with Radio Televisión Española; and representatives from the 14 clubs participating in the top category.

Francisco V. Blázquez, president of the Spanish Royal Handball Federation, thanked everyone who attended the presentation event and stated that "this is great news for women's handball, a dream we had been looking to fulfil for a long time". He also said that "the Iberdrola Guerreras League means a qualitative leap forward for our sport, thanks to the collaboration of everyone who has participated in the project".

In addition to the change in name, the project guarantees the presence of the Iberdrola Guerreras League on the Teledeporte sports channel (every Friday at 9 p.m.), the best possible showcase to show all sports fans the best side of Spanish women's handball.

The agreement between Iberdrola and the REFBM involves organising the All-Stars Match. In this encounter a number of players from the national handball team, Carlos Viver's Guerreras, face a selection of players from the League that form the Iberdrola Guerreras team.

Another part of the collaboration between Iberdrola and the REFBM is the launch of the Iberdrola Guerrera Awards. The 'Iberdrola Guerrera of the Round', formerly know as the 'Fans MVP', awards the best player of each round of matches in the highest category of Spanish women's handball.
