Natal de 1975: o frontão Miami Jai Alai reúne 15.500 espectadores. Todos usam suas melhores roupas porque é o local da moda — há 16 frontões com jogos diários —, o lugar ao qual se deve ir para ser visto e ser alguém na capital do estado da Flórida.
A cesta punta se tornou um dos esportes de aposta favoritos nos Estados Unidos e chegou a movimentar mais dinheiro do que as corridas de cavalos. Era divulgado como o esporte mais rápido e arriscado, e eles tinham toda a razão: a bola viaja em velocidades superiores a 200 km/h.
Uma longa viagem
Como um esporte basco chegou ao outro lado do oceano? Chegou, principalmente, de duas formas: no final do século XIX, com a emigração basca à Califórnia e Idaho para trabalharem como pastores e, a partir da década de 1960, com os exilados cubanos em Miami — já que em Havana, na época de Batista, esse era o esporte mais popular depois do beisebol.
Jogo profissional de cesta punta.
Esse foi começo da era de ouro da cesta punta. Mais do que amantes do esporte, os norte-americanos frequentavam os frontões para apostar, já que, naquela época, havia poucos esportes que permitiam apostas. De fato, o crime organizado tentou assumir um negócio tão atraente. Fala-se até que alguns jogos que tiveram seus resultados manipulados.
O declínio chegaria devido a uma greve dos jogadores que se prolongou por três longos anos. Vários frontões foram fechados e, quando retornaram às quadras, havia mais concorrência porque as licenças dos cassinos, assim como de outros jogos de aposta, tinham sido ampliadas. Atualmente, restam poucos frontões. Suas arquibancadas vazias são uma mera lembrança dos seus antigos dias de glória.
A exposição A memória recuperada — que pode ser vista até 02 de julho no 25.º andar da Torre Iberdrola de Bilbao — dedica um espaço à presença dos bascos nos EUA, enfatizando especialmente a cesta punta.
