Navidad de 1975: el frontón Miami Jai Alai reúne a 15.500 espectadores. Todos llevan sus mejores galas porque es el lugar de moda —hay 16 frontones con partidos diarios—, el sitio al que debes acudir para dejarte ver si quieres ser alguien en la capital del estado de Florida.
La cesta punta se convirtió en uno de los deportes de apuestas favoritos en los Estados Unidos y llegó a mover más dinero que las carreras de caballos. Lo publicitaban como el deporte más rápido y arriesgado y no les faltaba razón: la pelota supera ampliamente los 200 km/h.
Un largo viaje
¿Cómo llegó un deporte autóctono del País Vasco al otro lado del océano? Fundamentalmente, por dos vías: a finales del siglo XIX con la emigración vasca hacia California y Idaho para trabajar como pastores y, a partir de la década de 1960, con los exiliados cubanos en Miami, ya que en La Habana de Batista este era el deporte más popular después del béisbol.

Aquí comenzó la era dorada de la cesta punta. Más que por afición al deporte, los estadounidenses acudían a los frontones para apostar, ya que por aquel entonces el juego era una actividad muy limitada. De hecho, el crimen organizado intentó hacerse con el jugoso negocio y se llegó a hablar de partidos amañados.
El declive llegaría por una huelga de los jugadores que se prolongó durante tres largos años. Varios frontones cerraron y cuando regresaron a las canchas había más competencia porque las licencias de casinos y otros juegos de apuestas se habían ampliado. Hoy quedan muy pocos frontones y sus gradas, solitarias, son un mero recuerdo de su antiguo esplendor.
La exposición La memoria recobrada —que se puede ver hasta el 2 de julio en la planta 25 de la Torre Iberdrola de Bilbao— dedica un espacio a la presencia de los vascos en los EE. UU. haciendo especial hincapié en el Jai Alai.
