Personal profile and academic training

Married and the father of four children, Ignacio Galán is an industrial engineer with a degree from the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería (ICAI) of Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Madrid). Degree in Business Administration and Foreign Trade from ICADE of Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Madrid), and in General Corporate Management and Foreign Trade from Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI) in Madrid.

Honorary doctorate degrees from the Universities of Salamanca, Comillas (Madrid), Edinburgh, and Strathclyde (Glasgow). He has been a visiting professor at Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería (ICAI) and is a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, chairman of the Social Council of Universidad de Salamanca, and a member of the Presidential Advisory Board of Massachusets Institute of Technology (MIT). He speaks English, French, Italian, and Portuguese.

Noteworthy experience in the energy and industrial engineering sector

In the industrial engineering sector, he has served as chief operating officer of Industria de Turbo Propulsores, S.A. (ITP) and as chairman of the European aerospace consortium Eurojet, headquartered in Germany. He has also held various management positions at Sociedad Española del Acumulador Tudor, S.A. (now, Exide Group), engaged in the manufacture and sale of batteries. From 2014 to 2016 he chaired the electricity cluster of the World Economic Forum (Davos).

Noteworthy experience in other industries

He has also been chief executive officer of Airtel Móvil, S.A. (now, Vodafone España, S.A.U.) and a member of the Supervisory Board of Nutreco Holding N.V., a listed company in The Netherlands, active in the food industry. He was also founding partner and director of the Matarromera Group, dedicated to viticulture and the production of wine and oil.

  • Among other recognitions, in 2023 he has been included on TIME100 Climate List of the 100 most influential leaders driving business climate action, he has received the Best Business Leadership in Energy Transition Award from El Periódico de la Energía, has been recognised, for the twelfth time, Best Chief Executive of European Electric Companies, according to the Institutional Investor Research Group, and has received from Ecoprensa the José Echegaray Award to personalities with international projection who have contributed to the promotion of the liberal spirit and ideology.
  • He has also received the World Jurist Association Medal of Honor for his promotion of ESG principles, and the ESG Leadership Award from The Foreign Policy Association.
  • In 2020 he received the Management Leadership Award by the Spanish Association for Quality (AEC) and the Business Career Award by el Economista
  • In 2019 he was selected as one the best five world CEOs on the Harvard Business Review Ranking, and he was recognised by Bloomberg as one of the 30 leaders in the fight against climate change. He also received the National Innovation and Design Award Winner in the Innovative Career category granted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, he also received the Premio León, from El Español, to the Best Business Management; also Honourable Mention of his professional career by the Official Industrial Engineers Association of Madrid.
  • In 2018 he was appointed Español Universal by the Fundación Independiente and Honorary Member of the Spanish Institute of Engineering.
  • In 2014, he received the international Responsible Capitalism Award by the First Group.
  • In 2011 he was named best CEO in the European utilities sector and among Spanish listed companies for investor relations, according to the Thomson Extel Survey.
  • In 2008, he was named Business Leader of the Year Award by the Spain-United States Chamber of Commerce.
