Neoenergia, subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group’s in Brazil, has secured €14.8 million in funding from Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to support the Muçununga Project, an ecological restoration initiative in the Atlantic Forest led by Carbon2Nature Brasil and Biomas.
Carbon2Nature Brasil, a joint initiative of Neoenergia and Carbon2Nature, is promoting a high-impact forest restoration model focused on native species and the generation of high-integrity carbon credits. In its first phase, the project will restore 1,300 hectares in southern Bahia through the planting of more than two million native trees.
Beyond its contribution to climate action, the project will deliver significant biodiversity benefits by helping to restore habitats in one of Brazil’s most diverse and threatened ecosystems. Recovering these areas will play an important role in protecting vulnerable species and enhancing ecosystem resilience.
The initiative also has a strong social dimension, creating jobs, generating economic opportunities and delivering tangible benefits for local communities. Fourteen communities will take part in programmes focused on wellbeing, income generation and community development, reflecting Iberdrola’s commitment to projects that combine environmental restoration, climate action and sustainable social progress in the regions where it operates.
