  • In his opening speech, Ignacio Galán highlighted the benefits of electrification in terms of energy self-sufficiency and competitiveness, and the need for investment in electricity networks

Iberdrola has held the first edition of the Iberdrola Legal Forum, a space for dialogue and reflection on the role of law in the major challenges posed by the transformation of Europe’s energy model through electrification.

Under the theme “Electrification, sovereignty and legal certainty: an opportunity for transformation for Europe”, the event was opened by the Group’s Executive Chairman, Ignacio Galán, who highlighted the advantages of electrification in strengthening Europe’s energy autonomy and competitiveness, as well as the need to boost investment in electricity networks to make this transformation possible.

The forum began by analysing how large companies are tackling an energy landscape in transformation, at a time when electrification is increasingly important for the competitiveness of countries and for investment decisions.

Strengthening the European Union’s energy sovereignty was the focus of another of the forum’s panels, which underlined that reinforcing this autonomy means accelerating electrification by making use of local resources to reduce external dependence and protect citizens and industry from episodes of price volatility.

Electricity networks were also at the centre of one of the main debates of the event, as a key element in driving electrification. In this area, speakers pointed to the need to establish appropriate and predictable incentives, speed up permitting and improve the planning and coordination of new infrastructure.

Energy taxation completed the forum’s programme, and it was noted that this is one of the areas in which there must be greater consistency between European policies and their application by member states. In addition, speakers advocated a tax system that provides the right economic signals and removes barriers to electrification.
