Iberdrola Portugal, subsidiary Group of Iberdrola in Portugal, continues to promote solutions that expand access to shared renewable energy, with the development of 10 solar communities – two already operational and eight further ones – across different regions of the country.
Together, these communities will enable the sharing of nearly 1.7 million kWh of renewable energy and prevent the emission of over 250,000 kilograms of CO₂, making a tangible contribution to electrification and reinforcing the Group’s commitment to a more decentralised, participatory energy model that is closer to the consumer.
The model developed by Iberdrola enables surplus energy generated by photovoltaic installations to be shared with nearby consumers, even if they do not have their own panels. In this way, access to renewable energy is democratised, a more efficient use of energy resources is encouraged, and direct benefits are generated for producers and consumers.
As well as promoting energy savings and sustainability, these solar communities help to create value in the local area and accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more distributed and resilient energy system.
