Iberdrola strengthens grid resilience to extreme weather in the United States

Avangrid, subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in United States, responded to a series of severe storms and extreme heat that affected more than 283,000 customers across New York, Connecticut and Maine over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Beginning on 1 July, successive storm systems swept across the north-eastern United States, coinciding with exceptionally high temperatures and dangerous heat indices. In response, Avangrid deployed more than 1,370 lineworkers, field crews and support personnel from its electric utilities.

Working around the clock throughout the holiday weekend, the teams repaired storm damage and restored power to affected customers. Thanks to this coordinated response, electricity service was safely restored while maintaining the reliability and resilience of the grid despite exceptionally high demand.

Avangrid’s response demonstrates the importance of continued investment in strengthening and modernising electricity networks to withstand increasingly frequent and severe weather events.
