Iberdrola strengthens the resilience of the UK grid in the face of Storms Austen and Boelo

SP Electricity North West, the ScottishPower distribution company and a subsidiary of Iberdrola Group in the UK, has restored power to the 222,000 customers affected by Storms Austen and Boelo.

The two consecutive Atlantic storms have had the biggest impact on its network since Storm Arwen almost five years ago, with winds exceeding 128 kilometres per hour causing significant damage to electricity infrastructure.

The swift mobilisation of teams meant that power was restored to 98% of affected customers in under 24 hours and to 99.6% in under 48 hours.

In addition to repair work, SP Electricity North West deployed a wide-ranging operation to support customers and communities. During the event, it handled 38,000 calls and carried out more than 405,000 proactive actions and contacts with people with special needs.

The response to Austen and Boelo highlights the ability of Iberdrola Group's distribution companies to act, plan, provide care and offer support in the face of extreme weather events, and the importance of having resilient electricity networks.
