Iberdrola supports peatland restoration in southern Scotland

ScottishPower Energy Networks, Iberdrola’s electricity distribution company in Scotland, is supporting a new peatland restoration project at Queensberry Estate. The initiative will restore 46 hectares of degraded peatland – an area equivalent to more than 60 football pitches – with the aim of strengthening the territory’s natural resilience to flooding.

The project involves rewetting the land so that the peat can regain its ability to absorb and retain water, slowing the flow into nearby valleys and rivers. This will help reduce flash flooding, stabilise local streams and lower the risk of flooding for communities, homes, businesses and wildlife in the area.

As well as contributing to water management, the restoration will improve the quality of rivers such as the Nith and support the recovery of natural habitats, vegetation and mountain species. The initiative forms part of ScottishPower Energy Networks’ plan to integrate nature protection into its investments in the electricity network and paves the way for future collaborations focused on biodiversity and environmental restoration.
