Ignacio Galán meets the UK Prime Minister in Downing Street to discuss investment opportunities

Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán was one of the leading business executives invited by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves to participate in the UK-Spain Business Roundtable in 10 Downing Street on Wednesday 3 September.

Asked by Sir Keir for his views on the opportunities for investment, the Chairman said that thanks to the long-term stability of the UK Government’s plans to reform planning and electrify the economy, Iberdrola is more than doubling its investments in the country, to £24bn by 2028.

Added to this is the more than £35 billion that Iberdrola has invested in the United Kingdom over the last 20 years in transmission and distribution networks and renewable generation.

The Chairman noted favourably the UK’s traditions of rule of law and regulatory stability, and the commitment of public authorities to coherence and dialogue. He welcomed the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan and the measures it had adopted to reform planning. With ongoing dialogue and co-operation, the UK economy would benefit from Iberdrola’s investment – delivering more opportunities for local supply chains and skilled jobs.

In terms of the opportunities for enhanced bilateral co-operation, the Chairman identified the importance of building on the UK-EU Agreement, signed in May 2025. Working together more closely on electrification and energy security would bring benefits for consumers and industries through lower energy costs and reduced emissions.

Spain’s Prime Minister and Economy Minister took part in the Roundtable, along with executives from a select group of companies including Santander, Telefónica,  BP, Barclays and AstraZeneca.
