Neoenergia, Iberdrola’s Brazilian subsidiary, is investing around €155 million (868 million reais) in 2026 to build 12 new electricity substations and upgrade a further 33. Three of the new substations and six of the upgrades are already operational, with the remaining projects due to be completed by December. The works will cover 57 municipalities across six states and the Federal District, benefiting around 1.7 million customers.
The projects will increase installed capacity, drive the electrification of the economy and strengthen network resilience in the face of extreme weather events. Integrating the facilities into control centres will improve safety, speed up system recovery and enable a more effective response to heatwaves, droughts and torrential rain. Bahia will account for the largest number of projects, with a particular focus on tourist destinations and agro-industrial areas.
These investments form part of a 50 billion reais plan running until 2030 for the company’s five distribution businesses, which includes 115 new substations and 162 upgrades. Of the total investment, 46% will go towards expanding electricity infrastructure, 40% towards modernising and digitising networks and improving their performance, and 14% towards reducing losses and strengthening support systems.
