Record-breaking 1,500-drone display lights up the skies over Bilbao to mark Iberdrola’s 125th anniversary

  • Tens of thousands of people watched the largest drone show ever staged in Spain, powered entirely by renewable energy
Artxanda, Avenida de las Universidades, the Euskalduna Bridge, Plaza Euskadi and Plaza Txema Aguirre were among the most popular viewing locations

Iberdrola brought the celebrations marking its 125th anniversary to a spectacular close last night with the largest drone show ever staged in Spain. The display, featuring 1,500 drones, illuminated the skies above Bilbao and was visible from multiple locations across the city between 11.00 pm and 11.30 pm.

Following the free music festival held earlier in the day in Doña Casilda Park, which featured performances by Juanes, Antonio Orozco, Rigoberta Bandini and Süne, the evening culminated in a breathtaking aerial display lasting around 20 minutes. The drones created a series of large-scale 2D and 3D light formations, synchronised with specially designed music and visual effects.

The show celebrated some of the most significant milestones in Iberdrola’s history, including its journey from its origins in Bilbao to becoming a global energy leader. Through a succession of striking images, the drones recreated elements associated with the company’s activity, including electricity infrastructure, while also highlighting its social commitment.

Tens of thousands of people gathered at key viewing points across the city, including Mount Artxanda, Avenida de las Universidades, the area surrounding the Euskalduna Bridge, Plaza Euskadi and Plaza Txema Aguirre, to enjoy the display, which was powered entirely by renewable energy.

Throughout the day, visitors had access to information points, food and beverage outlets, medical services, toilet facilities, accessible areas for people with reduced mobility, a children's play zone and a Punto Violeta safe space.

A dedicated cleaning, maintenance and landscaping operation was also deployed throughout the event to ensure the venues remained in excellent condition.

125 Years of Light

The celebration forms part of the “125 Light Years” programme, through which Iberdrola is marking its anniversary throughout 2026 with initiatives for employees, customers, shareholders and the wider public. Highlights include concerts in Madrid on 27 June, featuring Lenny Kravitz, Manuel Carrasco, Ana Mena and Álvaro de Luna, and in Valencia on 28 November, featuring Estopa and Mafalda Cardenal. The programme also includes exhibitions, community initiatives and the illumination of iconic buildings.
