ScottishPower Energy Networks (SPEN), ScottishPower’s distribution network business and Iberdrola Group’s subsidiary in the UK, announced last July that it had awarded M Group a £110 million contract to modernise more than 70 kilometres of the electricity line between Strathaven (South Lanarkshire) and Smeaton (East Lothian), one of the main electricity corridors between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The project will upgrade the infrastructure of the country’s southern networks, which was originally installed in the 1960s. It will also create 1,000 new jobs directly and tens of thousands more across the supply chain, providing a major boost to the local economy.
The initiative is part of ScottishPower’s plan to invest £24 billion in the UK by 2028 and its £12 billion programme to strengthen the electricity transmission network in southern and central Scotland.
