Iberdrola is driving the electrification of maritime transport with a new shore power system in Spain

Iberdrola España, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in Spain, has completed the installation of an electricity supply infrastructure for docked vessels at the port of Pasaia (Gipuzkoa), known as Onshore Power Supply (OPS), which allows ships to connect to the onshore grid whilst in port and use electricity from renewable sources.

Thanks to this system, ships can switch off their auxiliary engines whilst berthed, reducing local emissions, improving air quality and also reducing noise pollution in the port area.

With this project, Iberdrola is reinforcing its commitment to innovative solutions to accelerate electrification in hard-to-reach sectors such as maritime transport and port operations. OPS technology enables more efficient, cleaner and autonomous energy management in port, as well as reducing vibrations, noise and wear and tear on on-board equipment.
