Iberdrola issues $1.6 billion of green bonds in the United States market

  • The Group decides to access the world's largest capital market again with corporate financing, where its US subsidiaries have been regularly financed
  • The funds obtained will be used for electricity network assets, mainly transmission, and renewable energy facilities in the United States, a country in which Iberdrola expects annual investments of $5 billion in the coming years.
  • Demand exceeded $5 billion, more than three times the amount issued, with 116 investors participating, including many of the largest financial institutions in the United States.
  • The margins obtained by Iberdrola, in line with those of a similar operation in the Euromarket, are among the most attractive in the electricity sector in the United States

Iberdrola has decided to re-enter the U.S. debt market with a $1.6 billion green bond issue. The operation, Iberdrola's first direct operation in the United States since 2009, opens a new financing channel for the company in a market in which its American subsidiaries have been active.

The issuance, aimed at institutional investors inside and outside the United States, has involved 116 mostly American investors – including many of the country's main financial institutions – with demand of more than $5 billion, more than three times the final amount. Its green nature has contributed to increasing demand, both inside and outside the United States.

This operation allows Iberdrola to expand and diversify its sources of financing and contributes to progressively improving its financial costs both in the US market and in the Euromarket.

The issuance is structured in two tranches of $800 million each. The first matures on November 4, 2029, with an annual fixed coupon of 5.40%, while the second matures on November 4, 2033, with an annual fixed coupon of 5.85%.

In relative terms, the final cost has been comparable to what Iberdrola could have obtained in the Euromarket, which reflects the good timing chosen to execute the transaction.

The funds obtained from the issuance will be used to finance or refinance electricity network assets, mainly transmission and renewable facilities in the United States, a country in which Iberdrola expects annual investments of $5 billion in the coming years.
