Avangrid, the US subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, installed more than 650 smart devices during 2025 through its distribution companies Central Maine Power (CMP), New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) across their respective service areas. The smart devices provide real-time readings to energy control centres. When an outage occurs, operators can section off circuits and remotely redirect electricity. This allows outages to be reduced from hours to just minutes. The devices can restore service in as little as five minutes, which is especially valuable in rural and remote areas. They also minimize repair time for specialized crews by enabling them to focus on smaller areas when patrolling and locating damage.
The installation of these automated devices is part of the company’s plan to modernize the energy infrastructure in Maine and New York, making it more resilient to increasingly frequent and severe weather events. Other initiatives include regular inspections and maintenance of poles, as well as investments in substations and other key projects.
