The world benchmark for measuring companies’ contributions to sustainable development

Iberdrola, once more included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in the utilities sector

  • The company is one of four electricity companies present in the 2018 edition both at the world (DJSI World) and European level (DJSI Europe)
  • Iberdrola is the only European utility company selected in all 19 editions of the DJSI, a clear example of its firm commitment to sustainability

Iberdrola has once again been included in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), the world benchmark for assessing corporate contributions to sustainable development. The company achieved an overall score of 87 points in the 2018 edition.

Through an appropriate strategy that includes sustainability as one basic pillar, Iberdrola continues to strengthen its leadership in the areas of environmental management; innovation; creation of business opportunities; supply chain management and social and environmental reporting.

The DJSI has recognised Iberdrola in the utilities sector for its policies aimed at combating climate change; investing in renewable energy; developing human capital; engaging with interest groups, and; attracting and retaining talent, among other goals.

The company has once again been among the 15 most sustainable electricity companies in the world due to its strategic approach based on the development of renewable energies and it is one of the four utilities present in both the DJSI World index and DJSI Europe -together with REE, EDP and Terna-.

Iberdrola already has a capacity of almost 29,500 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity generation and it is a world leader in wind energy with more than 16,000 MW of installed power, both onshore and offshore.

Iberdrola is the only power company in Europe to have been included in all 19 editions of the DJSI, a clear sign of its strong commitment to sustainability and confirmation of its strategy, which has responded successfully to the main economic, environmental and social challenges of international energy policy.

Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Iberdrola has incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations for the 2015-2030 horizon into its business strategy and its sustainability policy, and it is a benchmark for its direct contribution to global objectives, particularly in its contributions in the field of energy and climate change.

In this sense, the company focuses its efforts on the supply of safe, sustainable and non-polluting energy, which has made it a world leader in wind technology. In addition, it promotes the Electricity for All programme, through which more than four million people in developing countries have already been given access to electricity, the programme's goal is to reach 16 million by 2030.

Furthermore, Iberdrola has always shown its commitment to reducing emissions to combat climate change and move towards the decarbonisation of the economy. The company has set the new environmental objective of achieving a 50% reduction in its CO2 emission intensity by 2030 over 2007 levels, and of being carbon neutral by 2050.

Due to the characteristics of its generation mix, its investment profile and the commitments the company has assumed, Iberdrola is a key player in the electricity sector’s contribution to eliminating coal from the world economy and in achieving the objective of not exceeding an increase of 2 oC in the global temperature by the end of the century with respect to pre-industrial levels.
