Iberdrola obtains final authorization for the NECEC transmission line between the United States and Canada

Avangrid, the US subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has announced that it has obtained the final permit required for the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) transmission line project, which will connect the United States and Canada via a 233-kilometer high-voltage line. This milestone marks the final regulatory step in a rigorous multi-year process and clears the way for the completion of one of the largest and most transformative energy projects in the region.

The NECEC project will supply 1,200 megawatts of baseload hydroelectric power from Quebec (Canada) to New England (United States), primarily to the state of Massachusetts, reducing carbon emissions by up to 3.6 million metric tons per year. During its installation, it has facilitated the creation of more than 1,600 jobs.

Once fully operational, which is expected by the end of the year, the connection will strengthen the reliability and security of New England's electricity system, enable more competitive electricity prices, and boost socioeconomic development.

The project will provide clean energy to 1.2 million homes and generate approximately €2.6 billion in net benefits for Massachusetts electricity distribution customers, resulting in monthly savings on their bills.
