ScottishPower, the UK subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, continues to move forward with its commitment to biodiversity and climate action through a new environmental restoration project in southern Scotland, led by its distribution company ScottishPower Energy Networks in collaboration with specialist conservation organisations.
The project has enabled the restoration of 22.5 hectares of peatland in the Loch Moan area, an area equivalent to around 32 football pitches, with the aim of restoring the natural flow of water to the River Cree and improving habitat quality. This initiative contributes to strengthening the health of the river ecosystem and supports the conservation of species with high ecological value in an area of particular biodiversity importance.
The restoration of peatlands, which act as major carbon sinks, helps to avoid emissions associated with land degradation while also strengthening the environmental resilience of the surrounding area, in line with the Group’s strategy of integrating nature-based solutions into its activities.
This initiative forms part of SP Energy Networks’ Nature Action Plan and demonstrates how investment in electricity networks can generate shared value for communities and the environment.
Through projects such as this, Iberdrola is progressing towards its ambition of achieving a net positive impact on biodiversity by 2030 and actively contributing to the regeneration of natural capital in the regions where it operates.
