Iberdrola Renewables Polska, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in Poland, will receive €44 million (PLN 186 million) from the Polish National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management for the construction of three battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total combined capacity of 160 megawatts (MW). Specifically, these are the BESS Pniewnik 1 (38 MW) and BESS Pniewnik 2 (42 MW) systems in the Mazovia region, and the BESS Zushi (80 MW) system in the Lower Silesia region.
These systems convert electrical energy into chemical energy during battery charging in periods of low demand and release it when needed, such as during consumption peaks or low renewable production.
Iberdrola is promoting efficient energy storage technology in Poland as one of the key drivers of electrification. The company's project portfolio in this country currently stands at 940 MW, with a dozen BESS projects in different regions of the country.
