Leo XIV receives Ignacio Galán in audience

Pope Leo XIV received Iberdrola’s executive chairman, Ignacio Galán, and its chief executive officer, Pedro Azagra, in audience at the Vatican on Friday, according to the Holy See’s daily bulletin.

Iberdrola — founded in 1901 as Hidroeléctrica Ibérica — is considered Europe’s largest electricity company and one of the two largest in the world by market capitalisation.

Iberdrola’s executive chairman shared with the Pope his experience and commitment to sustainability, the fight against climate change and decarbonisation, and explained how the electrification of the economy can help achieve these goals, together with greater energy self-sufficiency and autonomy. He also noted that the financial resources currently used to import fuels could instead be allocated to greater productive investment that supports economic and social growth.

The executive chairman of Iberdrola presented the Pontiff with a copy of the book Tratos y contratos de mercaderes y tratantes, by the 16th-century Spanish Dominican economist and philosopher Tomás de Mercado. It is a special edition by the University of Salamanca, whose Social Council is chaired by Sánchez Galán.
