La energía eólica marina flotante tiene el potencial de acceder al 58 % de los recursos eólicos de Estados Unidos.
Avances en Estados Unidos

La apuesta por las energías renovables en Estados Unidos se encuentra en pleno desarrollo. Mientras que Europa tiene más de 5.400 aerogeneradores marinos en funcionamiento, EE. UU. solo tiene siete, todos ellos situados en la costa este del país.

Las altas velocidades del viento y las aguas poco profundas propias del Océano Atlántico posibilitan el desarrollo de actividad eólica en la zona este del país. Lo contrario ocurre con la zona oeste, donde la plataforma continental exterior del Océano Pacífico se hunde rápidamente en profundidades de más de 60 metros, lo que hace que el océano sea inadecuado para las tradicionales turbinas eólicas de fondo fijo.

Sin embargo, está surgiendo una solución: el impulso de la tecnología eólica marina flotante. Se han identificado dos ubicaciones en California para desarrollos flotantes a escala comercial. Juntos, podrían aportar 4,6 GW de energía limpia a la red, suficiente para alimentar 1,6 millones de hogares estadounidenses. Los pronósticos globales predicen que el crecimiento de la energía eólica marina flotante aumentará de los 100 GW actuales a 250 GW para 2050.

Esta tecnología incipiente consiste en montar una turbina de 1.500 toneladas, que equivale al peso de unas 10 ballenas azules, en una plataforma flotante amarrada al lecho marino.

El mayor parque eólico marino flotante operativo del mundo se encuentra operando en Kincardine Escocia, con una capacidad de 50MW suficiente electricidad para abastecer a unos 55.000 hogares escoceses.

Se están proponiendo nuevos proyectos en toda Europa y Asia. En 2022, un proyecto financiado por la UE y dirigido por Iberdrola, verá instalada en aguas noruegas la mayor turbina individual, con una capacidad de 10MW.
Una apuesta segura para impulsar las renovables
Al igual que el grupo Iberdrola fue pionero en el impulso de la energía eólica terrestre hace más de dos décadas, la compañía encabeza hoy el desarrollo de la eólica marina, una de las claves del crecimiento de la compañía, por el que inició su apuesta hace ya 15 años.
La apuesta por la eólica marina se reforzará en los próximos años. Para ello, Iberdrola cuenta con una cartera de proyectos de más de 43.000 MW, de los que casi 30.000 MW –un 67 % del total– corresponden a desarrollos offshore.
De esta forma, el grupo confirma su liderazgo global en esta tecnología. Centrado en países con objetivos renovables ambiciosos, la compañía cuenta con proyectos en Alemania, Japón, Suecia, Irlanda, Polonia y Filipinas. Además, cuenta con iniciativas en Estados Unidos y Reino Unido.
