Winners of the Iberdrola Convive Awards
Meet the winners from all editions of the Iberdrola Convive Awards
Renewable energy Biodiversity Spain
The Iberdrola Convive Awards, held for the first time in 2023, recognise initiatives, partnerships, companies, projects or local organisations that exemplify the opportunities the energy transition offers to rural areas and local communities in Spain.

The Convive Programme highlights the key role of rural areas in the energy transition by attracting investment, generating opportunities for local development and employment, fostering industrial activity and prosperity, contributing to the sustainability of the region and its biodiversity and promoting collaboration between different stakeholders to maximise the positive impacts of the transition on local communities.
Categories and winners of the 2026 Convive Awards
On 30 September 2026, the third edition of the Iberdrola Convive Awards took place, recognising the best initiatives for highlighting the opportunities presented by the energy transition for rural areas. The awards were presented in Sigüenza, Guadalajara in the presence of the CEO of Iberdrola España, Mario Ruiz-Tagle, local authorities and institutional representatives from the region.
The advisory board for this third edition of the Convive Awards presented the awards to various organisations from the public and private sectors. The winning initiatives in each category were:
Community Leadership Award: Silvia Gómez and the town councils of Víllora and Enguídanos
Silvia Gómez, chair of the La Costana Neighbourhood Association, received the Community Leadership Award for demonstrating that the energy transition "is decided and won" in villages: a rural, female-led initiative that has transformed the arrival of wind power into a pioneering energy community, with bills halved and a bright future for her region.
For their part, the town councils of Víllora and Enguídanos are recognised for their ability to combine the conservation of natural heritage with sustainable local development. Particular mention is made of the collaboration between public authorities and Iberdrola, the environmental restoration of the area and its contribution to sustainable tourism, environmental education and the creation of opportunities for rural communities in the Cabriel Valley Biosphere Reserve, making it a model of coexistence between energy, biodiversity and regional development.
Award for Innovation with Impact: Bayer and Birka Composites
This award for the project to achieve total decarbonisation in the manufacture of the active ingredient in Aspirin in Asturias is presented to Bayer for demonstrating that electrification can also transform demanding industrial thermal processes. This is a pioneering initiative that reduces process emissions to virtually zero, avoiding more than 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year and setting a national and international benchmark for industrial decarbonisation.
The Convive Award has also been presented to Birka Composites for demonstrating that electrification and the protection of biodiversity can go hand in hand, through an innovation that originated in a rural setting, creates skilled jobs for young people and turns the coexistence of development and nature into a replicable industrial model.
Transformative Entrepreneurship Award: the Arraigo Project and the heat pump manufacturing ecosystem in Lucena
The Convive Award goes to the Arraigo Project for turning the arrival of renewables into population growth: partnerships with developers that transform the benefits of electrification and the roll-out of renewables into deeply rooted families, open schools and villages with a future.
Likewise, the Lucena Heat Pump Manufacturing Ecosystem has also been recognised, demonstrating that Europe's electrification can be driven from a village in Córdoba: 3,200 green jobs born of 60 years of local industry, now also open to the most vulnerable young people.
Award for purpose-driven communication: the newspapers ‘Las Provincias’ and ‘El Comercio’
The Convive Communication Award goes to Las Provincias and El Comercio for their contribution to and engagement with current energy issues, covered in an accessible and friendly manner, which is crucial for regional development, social cohesion and the competitiveness of local areas. Their model of community-focused journalism, which is close to the people, and their commitment to accurate reporting, make them essential players in the progress and social harmony of rural areas.
The Vocento Group plays an essential role in providing information, fostering social cohesion and revitalising society in Spain. It combines journalistic rigour, a community-focused approach and analytical skills to address the issues affecting the public. Its work makes a decisive contribution to strengthening the social and democratic fabric, offering a space for encounter, reflection and participation for every community in which it operates.
Young Talent Award: UNICEF
The award is presented to UNICEF in recognition of its work with vulnerable young people, whom it educates and trains in activities aligned with decarbonisation and electrification, thereby contributing to the development and strengthening of local communities.
It has become a benchmark and scalable model with significant influence in terms of its impact on employment and public policy.
Biodiversity Conservation Award: the Basque Government
The award goes to the Basque Government for demonstrating in an exemplary manner how electrification and the integration of renewable energy can become drivers of regional development and environmental conservation.
The project stands out for modernising infrastructure essential to the energy transition, increasing the capacity and resilience of the electrical network while undertaking an unprecedented initiative to restore the landscape and protect biodiversity in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
Previous editions of the Convive Awards
On 27 November 2024, the second edition of the Iberdrola Convive Awards took place, in recognition of the best initiatives promoting environmental, agricultural and social coexistence with renewable energy. The awards, organised in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation in Technology for Human Development at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (itdUPM), were presented at a well-attended event in Paredes de Nava (Palencia), with the presence of the Group's Executive Chairman, Ignacio Galán, alongside local authorities and institutional representatives from the region.

Local Authorities and Citizen Participation: Paredes de Nava and La Serna Town Councils
The small municipality of La Serna (Palencia) has also been awarded a prize in this category in recognition of its pioneering commitment to renewable energy and public participation. Twenty years ago, it developed a solar farm on municipal land, with an investment of over 3 million euros, driven by 90 of the 120 residents registered in the town at the time. This project generated public wealth, clean energy and an exemplary model of innovation and strengthening of the local social fabric, which the town now aims to replicate through the creation of an open energy community on the roof of an agricultural building.

Innovative Solutions and Research: REDS-SDSN Spain and Ocean Ecostructures
The Renewables with the Territory: a shared vision initiative addresses the debate on the roll-out of renewable energy in Spain, promoting social innovation, dialogue and participation amongst 60 organisations from the public, private, academic and civil sectors. Between April 2023 and February 2024, it drew up a joint roadmap containing 50 proposals for legislative changes and best practices. Led by the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development (REDS-SDSN Spain), alongside organisations such as the European Climate Foundation, the project aims to implement these measures to align energy development with the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
Ocean Ecostructures develops innovative solutions to regenerate ecosystems in marine infrastructure linked to renewable energy. Its approach includes: biomimetic micro-reefs that mimic natural reefs; a system validated by the CSIC to measure environmental benefits in terms of biodiversity, CO₂, biomass and oxygen; and a multi-platform reporting service. With projects in the North Sea and the Balearic Islands, its model prioritises the involvement of scientific communities and local, replicable solutions for the development of all types of marine infrastructure in the future.
