This project represents a long-term and pioneering commitment in the real estate sector, in which Carbon2Nature will be responsible for its technical management, maintenance and monitoring and MERLIN will assume responsibility for the forest for the next 50 years. A forest to restore a degraded area in a zone of high ecological value The MERLIN Forest aims to restore an area severely affected by a major fire in 2022, the largest recorded in the province of Salamanca, Spain so far this century. Located in the municipality of Serradilla del Llano, near Ciudad Rodrigo, the project covers 200 hectares in an area with high environmental and landscape value. The aim is to create a native forest, which not only restores the ecosystem, but also strengthens it in the face of future environmental challenges and contributes to the local economy, generating a broad positive impact. * 192 hectares restored * More than 300,000 trees planted from five native species * More than 160,000 tons of CO₂ captured in 50 years and certified in accordance with the absorption project standard of the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. Adjacent to the Las Batuecas - Sierra de Francia Natural Park, this ecosystem will become a refuge for biodiversity, creating habitats for wildlife and pollinators, improving soil quality and conserving water. The project has a strong social impact: it creates rural employment, works against rural flight and creates new opportunities for local communities. A partnership for the future The MERLIN Forest is also an example of how partnering between companies can generate real solutions to major environmental challenges. With this initiative, MERLIN Properties and Carbon2Nature demonstrate that the real estate industry can lead the change, investing in a responsible and forward-looking model. 25/06/2025 - 15:00 UTC +02:00UPF Barcelona School of Management rewards the values-laden leadership of Ignacio Galán, Executive Chairman of Iberdrola In an emotional ceremony held today at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Barcelona School of Management, the Executive Chairman of Iberdrola , Ignacio Galán, was honoured with the Business Person of the Year award, a recognition that highlights his work marked by vision, innovation and commitment to society. During his speech, the Executive Chairman recalled how 25 years ago Iberdrola undertook a radical transformation of the energy sector, committing to electrification with clean energy, smart grids and storage. A commitment that, at the time, went against the tide, but which today has positioned the company as a global benchmark in sustainability and growth. The Executive Chairman also highlighted the role of companies as agents of social change: "More than two decades ago, we chose a path that seemed risky at the time, but which today has proven to be the right one". Thanks to a strategy based on innovation, sustainability and internationalisation, Iberdrola now operates in more than 30 countries and has increased the value of its assets eightfold, reaching 160 billion euros. Its market capitalisation exceeds 100 billion euros -10 times more than in 2001-, consolidating its position as the largest electricity company in Europe and one of the two largest in the world. Effort, behind all the growth During his speech, the Executive Chairman stressed that this award has a special meaning for him as it comes from an institution that shares the same principles that have guided its management: "An institution that has made its four great values - the vocation to transform, the generation of positive impacts on society, ethics and continuous improvement - the basis for the success of the School itself and of those who are trained here. Values that have a lot to do with my 25 years at Iberdrola". Beyond business achievements - such as a tenfold increase in market capitalisation or leading investment in energy innovation - the Executive Chairman stressed that the real driving force behind this success has been values and, above all, people. "Companies are people who work for and with people. None of what we have achieved would have been possible without a culture based on effort, honesty, loyalty and team spirit. These were the foundations of our first strategic plan in 2001, and they have accompanied us ever since on a path of continuous improvement," he said. In view of the new context, the Executive Chairman stressed that Iberdrola faces the future from a position of solid leadership and with a clear vision: to be the protagonist of the greatest energy transformation in history. With global electricity demand set to double in the next two decades, the company is prepared to respond to this challenge thanks to a model based on clean energy, smart grids, storage and digitalisation. "We are at the beginning of a phase of tremendous growth, and our model puts us in the best position to take advantage of the greatest development prospects in our 125-year history," said the Executive Chairman. The President closed his speech with a declaration of principles: "The true dimension of leadership is to turn business achievements into shared progress, tangible well-being and concrete opportunities for people". Ana Freire, Vice-Dean for Social Impact and Academic Innovation at the UPF Barcelona School of Management, was in charge of reading out the award winner's merits. Freire pointed out that Sánchez Galán, at the head of one of the largest electricity companies in the world, has spearheaded one of the most important energy transformations in the sector in recent decades. Under his leadership, Iberdrola has established itself as a global benchmark in renewable energies and smart grids in markets around the world. José Manuel Martínez Sierra, Director General of the UPF Barcelona School of Management, went on to recall that Harvard also recognises Ignacio Galán as one of the five most brilliant CEOs in the world. 24/06/2025 - 11:34 UTC +02:00Iberdrola, the Spanish company with the best corporate governance according to World Finance Iberdrola has been selected for again this year as the company with the best corporate governance practices in Spain according to the British publication World Finance, a leading expert in analysis of finance, international business and the world economy. World Finance’s Corporate Governance Awards recognise companies with the strongest governance models in each country that demonstrate their commitment to transparency and accountability, creating a better society and helping to address the biggest problems facing the world today. Leadership in corporate governance is one of Iberdrola's hallmarks, which has accompanied the business model initiated 25 years ago with which the electricity company has become the leading company in the industry in Europe and one of only two private utilities in the world with a market capitalisation of more than €100B. An international benchmark for transparency and engagement This evolution has also elevated Iberdrola to the category of international benchmark in good governance, backed by multiple national and international awards for its governance model and its commitment to ethical principles. Iberdrola's Governance and Sustainability System incorporates best practices with innovative and pioneering initiatives such as those developed under the framework of the permanent shareholder engagement policy. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of this policy, the company has opened a new engagement space on the corporate website and, in addition to the customary institutional roadshow, has organised a round of meetings with its minority shareholders to maximise transparency and active listening to its shareholder base. The result of this ongoing involvement is the massive level of shareholder participation at the General Meeting, which was just held this year with a quorum of more than three quarters of the share capital and support for all the proposals of the Board of Directors exceeding 99% of the total votes in favour and against This ongoing engagement has resulted in massive shareholder participation in the General Meeting, which was held earlier this year with a quorum of more than three-quarters of the share capital and support for all of the Board of Directors' proposals of over 99% of the total votes cast. Thanks to direct knowledge of the expectations of its stakeholders, Iberdrola's corporate reports go beyond legal requirements and good governance recommendations. This is evidenced by the launch of the sustainability report 15 years before it became mandatory in Spain, of the tax transparency report that reflects Iberdrola España's commitment to best tax practices for the benefit of the entire company, and of the latest annual corporate governance report prepared in open format, which expands the description of the activities of the Board of Directors and its committees and incorporates new content on ethics and compliance, among others. The highest ethical standards Iberdrola's Governance and Sustainability System is inspired by and based on a commitment to ethical principles, transparency, and leadership in the application of international best practices. To implement the highest ethical standards established in its Governance and Sustainability System, the company has established a Compliance System that seeks to ensure that it acts in accordance with ethical principles and applicable law and to prevent any irregular conduct of any kind. Iberdrola has published its compliance system transparency report this year like those in the past, being the first Ibex 35 company to undertake work of this nature. It represents another step in the company's commitment to the implementation and continuous improvement of a robust corporate culture and reaffirms a business model that respects the rights of customers, employees, shareholders, and all of its stakeholders in general.
