31/03/2026 - 13:09 UTC +02:00Iberdrola advances battery storage at the Alcochete and Algeruz solar plants in Portugal Iberdrola Portugal, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in Portugal , has begun installing battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the Alcochete I and Algeruz II solar plants, located in the district of Setúbal. The batteries for both projects will provide a combined storage capacity of 180 MWh—100 MWh at Alcochete I and 80 MWh at Algeruz II—and a total output capacity of 45 MW (25 MW and 20 MW, respectively). Together, they will be able to supply electricity for up to four hours to more than 10,000 homes. This initiative strengthens the electricity system’s ability to integrate greater volumes of renewable energy by storing surplus solar generation and delivering it when demand requires. In addition, the project marks further progress in Iberdrola’s storage strategy as a key enabler of electrification , combining short-duration solutions such as batteries with long-duration technologies like pumped-storage hydropower. 31/03/2026 - 11:32 UTC +02:00Gestamp and Iberdrola sign a 10-year agreement for the supply of clean energy in Europe Iberdrola and Gestamp have signed a 10-year renewable energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the supply of 660,000 megawatt hours of electricity to various plants in Europe belonging to the multinational specialising in the design, development and manufacture of high-engineering metal components for the automotive industry. The partnership reflects both companies' commitment to a safer, more efficient and sustainable industrial model based on the electrification of operations and production processes. The PPA covers 34 megawatts of installed capacity and will enable Gestamp's plants to be supplied with 100% renewable energy (80% wind and the remaining 20% solar), backed by certificates of origin. This agreement enables Gestamp to secure a long-term supply of renewable energy at a fixed and competitive price, in line with its strategy aimed at promoting stability and future visibility of its energy costs. It also helps the company take a further step in its contribution to the decarbonisation of the automotive industry's supply chain. For its part Iberdrola, Europe's leading electricity company and one of the world's two largest by market capitalisation, is further expanding its PPA portfolio and strengthening its role as a strategic partner to the industrial sector. The company recently retained its position at the forefront of the European power purchase agreement market for the third consecutive year, according to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2026 report. These long-term contracts form part of Iberdrola's strategy to foster stable partnerships with major customers, advance the electrification of the industrial and business sector and contribute to a self-sufficient, secure, competitive and sustainable energy system capable of meeting growing demand. In the case of the automotive sector in Spain, Iberdrola has signed agreements in 2026, valid for 10 years, covering 50 megawatts of installed capacity and the supply of one million megawatt-hours of 100% renewable energy. Javier Imaz, Chief Purchasing Officer (CPO) at Gestamp, said: “This agreement marks a very important milestone for the company as it represents a further step in its efforts to implement more sustainable production processes, committed to electrification, energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources. All of this forms part of Gestamp’s ambitious sustainability strategy, which aims, amongst other things, to continue contributing to the decarbonisation of the automotive industry’s supply chain.” David Martínez, Director of Iberdrola España's Customer Business, said: “This agreement represents a very important milestone for the company, as it marks another step forward in its efforts to implement more sustainable production processes, focused on electrification, energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources. All of this is part of Gestamp’s ambitious sustainability strategy, which aims, among other objectives, to continue contributing to the decarbonisation of the automotive industry’s supply chain.” READ MORE

30/03/2026 - 11:51 UTC +02:00Iberdrola awards contracts worth €3.5 billion for the Eastern Green Link 4 subsea interconnector in the UK The Iberdrola Group, through its British subsidiary SP Energy Networks, has awarded contracts worth over £3 billion (around €3.5 billion) for the development of the subsea electricity interconnector Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) between Scotland and England. This infrastructure will strengthen the UK's energy system, increase the security and self-sufficiency of the supply and support the country's economic growth. Under the signed agreement, Siemens Energy will build two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations, which will convert alternating current to direct current to transmit electricity more efficiently at 525,000 volts over long distances. The electricity will travel around 640 kilometres, mostly under the sea, before being converted back for integration into the onshore grid. This is the second major contract linked to this project following the one signed earlier this year with Prysmian, worth £2 billion (around €2.3 billion), for the supply of over 640 kilometres of cable, of which 530 kilometres will be subsea and 116 kilometres underground. With a capacity of 2,000 megawatts, Eastern Green Link 4 will link Fife in Scotland with Norfolk in England and will be able to transport enough renewable energy to supply more than 1.5 million homes. The converter stations will be located in these two regions. The main construction phase will begin in 2028, with commissioning scheduled for 2033. This project complements Eastern Green Link 1, another 2,000 megawatts link whose construction began in 2025 and which will connect Torness in Scotland with Hawthorne Pit in England. This project is expected to be completed in 2029. In total, Iberdrola will invest €14 billion by 2031 in transmission networks to increase the UK's capacity to transfer electricity between regions and strengthen energy security and self-sufficiency by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. Furthermore it will facilitate the integration of new clean generation and promote job creation and economic and social development. The UK is one of the Iberdrola Group's main investment destinations: the company plans to invest €20 billion in the country by 2028 to strengthen energy security and move towards a more self-sufficient, sustainable and competitive system.
