06/06/2019Iberdrola is making strides with its renewables strategy in Spain with plans to build Europe’s largest photovoltaic plant in Extremadura Iberdrola is moving forward with its renewables strategy with the Francisco Pizarro project which, with 590 MW and an investment totalling more than €300 million, will become Europe’s largest photovoltaic solar plant. Francisco Pizarro, which is now being processed by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, will occupy a 1,300-hectare site falling within Caceres’ municipal areas of Torrecillas de la Tiesa and Aldeacentenera. During the construction phase and until the plant is commissioned in 2022, up to 1,000 people will be employed on the site. It will be larger than the Núñez de Balboa photovoltaic plant that Iberdrola is building in Usagre (Badajoz) which, with 500 MW, is so far the biggest in Europe. The project will generate enough clean energy to supply 375,000 people every year, more than the total population of the cities of Cáceres and Badajoz; and will prevent the emission of 245,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year, evidence of the value of this technology to protect the environment and mitigate climate change. More than 2,000 MW under construction and processing With the addition of Francisco Pizarro, Iberdrola is now building or processing more than 2,000 MW in Spain, accounting for 70% of investments in the company’s plan for 2022, with a target of 3,000 MW in the country. The remaining renewable projects under development in Spain are, so far, the following: * In Cáceres, Extremadura, the Ceclavín (328 MW), Arenales (150 MW) and Campo Arañuelo I and II photovoltaic plants (50 MW each) are undergoing administrative processing. * In Andalusia, Iberdrola is developing the 50 MW Andévalo photovoltaic project, located within the largest wind farm in Continental Europe, promoted and managed by Iberdrola. * The Romeral 50 MW photovoltaic project will be built in Cuenca; * In Burgos, Iberdrola has wind farms with installed capacity of 73 MW under administrative processing (Herrera’s wind farm complex and La Lora’s one). In Spain, Iberdrola has more than 700 MW renewables under construction (the Núnez de Balboa photovoltaic plant and wind projects in three regions), expected to go into service between 2019 and 2020. All these renewable plants will become the flagship for Spain’s leadership in Extremadura, Spain and the European Union in the transition to a more sustainable energy system. Plan to relaunch clean energy in Spain Iberdrola is the biggest producer of wind energy in Spain, with installed power of 5,770 MW, while its total installed renewable capacity, including both wind and hydroelectric, is 15,790 MW. The company has a total of almost 30,000 MW installed capacity around the world. The activities underway are part of the clean energies relaunch plan designed by Iberdrola in Spain, entailing an investment of 8 billion euros between 2018 and 2022 and commissioning 10,000 new MW until 2030. The plan will create jobs for 20,000 people, almost ten times the number working in traditional generation in the company. These projects form part of the global investments that Iberdrola will make between 2018 and 2022, totalling 34 billion euros. READ MORE

30/05/2019Iberdrola receives the biggest ever green loan granted by the ICO, worth €400 million Iberdrola has received the biggest ever green loan granted by Spain’s Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO) amounting to €400 million with 12-year maturity and two-year grace period for principal. The transaction was signed this morning by the company’s Chairman, Ignacio Galán, and ICO Chairman, José Carlos García de Quevedo, during a meeting at Iberdrola’s corporate headquarters in Madrid. Classified as a ‘green’ loan, the funds will be assigned to the Tâmega pumped hydro power scheme currently being built in northern Portugal. The project comprises three new power plants with a total capacity of 1,158 MW, which will increase Portugal’s total installed capacity by 6% and will supply renewable energy to 440,000 Portuguese homes. 880 MW of the project’s capacity are pumped storage technology, the most efficient energy storage system today, which will facilitate the integration of renewables in the Iberian electrical system and enhanced sustainability. The Tâmega project also includes a significant sociocultural and environmental action plan supported with €50 million by Iberdrola which is being implemented in collaboration with the region’s municipalities. The purpose of the plan is to develop the area while improving living standards. It is estimated that during the construction of the hydroelectric complex, a total of 3,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs will be created, and the local environment will be protected. The programme includes an archaeological project to recover the Roman gold mine of Tresminas. With a €1.84-million investment, the company is collaborating with the Vila Pouca de Aguiar Council and the North Portugal Regional Department of Culture in the restoration of the region’s historical, archaeological and heritage sites. The loan granted today by ICO was certified by independent agency VigeoEiris , which has verified that the project to be financed complies with the Green Loan Principles. In its certification, VigeoEiris also assesses Iberdrola’s environmental, social and governance performance. Iberdrola, a leader in sustainable financing Today's agreement, and the loan signed with the European Investment Bank (EIB) last summer, secure financing for the Tâmega pumped hydro power scheme, whose construction entails total investment of more than €1.5 billion. Iberdrola is continuing to add to its great portfolio of renewable projects, to which it will allocate €13.3 billion during the 2018-2022 period. In line with its clean energy leadership and commitment to a low carbon energy model, Iberdrola has an increasingly higher percentage of green financing, both at group level and through its affiliates. For example, AVANGRID, which is listed in the New York Stock Exchange and is 81.5% controlled by Iberdrola, has successfully issued two green bonds. After being the first Spanish company to launch a green bond, in April 2014, the group has become the world’s leading corporate issuer with total green bonds now exceeding € 9.5 billion. The company has also been a pioneer in taking out green loans: in February 2017 it signed the first green loan with BBVA for an energy company and in April 2018, in Mexico, the first operation of this type carried out in Latin America, amounting to €500 million and US$400 million, respectively. In addition, in early 2018 Iberdrola reconfigured several lines of credit with a banking syndicate, amounting to €5.3 billion, in which the margin was contingent upon the company’s progress in several sustainability criteria. In March 2019, the group signed a similar operation for €1.5 billion. Last summer, AVANGRID also signed its first green credit line for US$2.5 billion. This financing strategy is also coherent with Iberdrola’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. In line with its activities, the group's efforts are largely focused on the provision of affordable and clean energy (Goal 7) and climate action (Goal 13). In addition, the group contributes directly to ensuring clean water and sanitation (Goal 6), it has increased its investment in R&D&I activities (Goal 9), promotes respect for the life of terrestrial ecosystems (Goal 15) and works to establish joint partnerships to deliver the goals (Goal 17). The company also makes an indirect contribution to all of the other Sustainable Development Goals. The operation signed today strengthens the commitment of the Instituto de Crédito Oficial towards meeting the Agenda 2030 SDGs which are particularly relevant for an institution such as ICO, whose main function is to promote economic activities that promote sustainable economic growth and job creation. As part of its global strategy, the ICO Group has included sustainability criteria in the development of its activity. Noteworthy is the recent launch of ICO's first green bond issue for €500 million, which will be used to finance activities, investments and projects of Spanish companies that contribute to the protection of the environment and the fight against climate change. In addition to being a leading issuer and catalyst for the financial and venture capital sector’s transition towards sustainable economic development, ICO promotes sustainability as its backbone, across all its aspects and as an essential part of Corporate Social Responsibility policies. 28/05/2019Ignacio Galán calls for action to build new alliances that deliver the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development San Agustín del Guadalix (Madrid). Iberdrola Chairman, Ignacio Galán, took part in a seminar entitled The Unavoidable Transformation , organised by the company, ISGlobal, itdUPM and the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development (REDS) on the Iberdrola Campus in San Agustín del Guadalix, Madrid. Ignacio Galán, plus the acting minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera; the Special Advisor of the Secretary of the United Nations for SDG, Jeffrey Sachs; and CEO of EIT Climate-KIC, Kirsten Dunlop, addressed an audience of around 300 people on the best strategy for fulfilling the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. During his speech, Ignacio Galán stated that “SDGs should not be a problem but rather an opportunity. Companies spearheading change, like Iberdrola, are doing better.” The Chairman called upon all sectors, companies and organisations to “work in the interest of the world, nature and people, upholding talent and doing things well”. “It’s good for shareholders and for society at large”, he added. In this regard, Ignacio Galán emphasised that investors are supporting companies committed to sustainability, declaring that “once the time for persuasion has passed, we have begun the phase of measuring what we are doing.” Jeffrey Sachs talked about Spain's role in achieving the UN 2030 Agenda goals. “Spain’s leadership in sustainable development is exciting and convincing,” he said. “The Government has put SDGs at the heart of the national agenda and has received overwhelming public support in recent elections. Many Spanish companies are leading in new clean, green technologies. Spain's role to deliver SDGs will be of great global importance in the years to come,” he added. Acting minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, was responsible for closing the first block of the seminar and argued that “we are destined to cooperate with our natural partners to identity those collectives, institutions and vulnerable groups which, necessarily, must be part of the plan for any solution.” This panel debate was the first session of an event in which around 20 globally recognised experts on sustainability and innovation took part. The objective was to encourage compliance with the UN 2030 Agenda, urging scientists, policymakers, business leaders and representatives from civil society to speed up action, intergenerational responsibility and collective commitment. Also participating in this seminar were the Ibero-American Secretary General, Rebeca Gynspan, the High Commissioner of the Spanish Government for the 2030 Agenda, Cristina Gallach, the professor at McGill University in Montreal and Senior Fellow of The Young Foundation and the Agirre Lehendakaria Center (UPV-EHU), Gorka Espiau, and the President of Fundación COTEC, Cristina Garmendia, among others. Iberdrola, committed to SDGs Iberdrola has fully incorporated to its strategy the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the UN 2030 Agenda , approved in September 2015. In line with its activities, Iberdrola focuses its efforts on the provision of affordable and clean energy (Goal 7) and climate action (Goal 13). In addition, the group contributes directly to ensuring clean water and sanitation (Goal 6), it has increased its investment in R&D&I activities to €270 million in 2018, (Goal 9) while promoting respect for the life of terrestrial ecosystems (Goal 15) and working to establish partnerships to achieve the goals (Goal 17). The company also makes an indirect contribution to all the other Sustainable Development Goals. In line with this commitment, Iberdrola is continuing to strengthen its leadership in clean energies and the fight against climate change, with annual investments of €8 billion up to 2022, 90% of which is allocated to renewables and networks. In Spain alone, the company expects to triple its current solar and wind generation capacity by 2030, create 20,000 new jobs until 2022 and continue to reduce contaminating emissions even further, despite Iberdrola’s being 75% lower than the average of Europe and Spain's large electricity companies. The company is also committed to electricity for all in emerging and developing countries. Through the Electricity for All programme, the company reached more than five million beneficiaries in Latin America and Africa since it was launched in 2015 and has set the objective of triple the number of beneficiaries by 2030.
