01/07/2022Iberdrola wins its largest network project in the world: it will build a 1,700-kilometre power line in Brazil Iberdrola takes a giant step forward in Brazil. The company, through its subsidiary Neoenergia, has been awarded its largest power grid line in the world in the 1,700-kilometre power transmission line auction held on Thursday, according to the country's National Electricity Agency (Aneel). Specifically, Neoenergia won two of the 13 lots offered: one, 1,707 kilometres, the longest project offered in the auction, between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The company also won the 291-kilometre contract in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. According to the regulator, the investment in these projects will amount to 5.5 billion Brazilian reals (around €1 billion) and will create more than 11,000 jobs during construction. The company is betting on this auction thanks to its attractive regulatory framework - revenues are linked to inflation - and the country's legal certainty. "The acquisition of the assets reinforces Neoenergia's expansion in the transmission segment and consolidates the company's commitment to the development of the country's electricity sector. We have a relevant role in the execution of the transmission project in the last five years that strengthens us in this market. The excellent partnerships with construction companies and suppliers allow us to achieve very favourable conditions", says Eduardo Capelastegui, future CEO of Neoenergia as of 15 July 2022. The 1,707-kilometre project aims to expand the transmission capacity of the northern region of Minas Gerais, so that energy generated by renewable sources can flow. It consists of three 500 kV lines, plus a 440 kV line. The new 500 kV New Bridge 3 substation will also be built. The deadline granted by the regulator for its construction is 60 months from the signing of the concession contract on 30 September 2022. This project could create around 10,000 jobs during construction. The second foresees the construction of 291 kilometres of lines in nine municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, with two 230 kV lines and sections and a 230/138 kV Paraíso 2 - 2x150 MVA substation. The objective is the integration of the small hydroelectric power plants Fundãozinho, Areado and Bandeirante and the connection of the distribution in the Paraíso region. The timeframe estimated by the regulator for completion is 48 months and around 1,250 jobs are expected during construction. Networks, key assets for Iberdrola Brazil is one of Iberdrola's growth markets. The company has more than 2,300 kilometres of transmission lines in operation in the country, following the completion of the April 2017 auction deliveries, with an average lead time of 15 months in relation to the deadline of the National Electricity Agency (ANEEL). In addition, it has 4,000 kilometres under construction, distributed in the five regions of Brazil. The company acquired lot 4 in the December 2021 auction and, since 2017, has added 13 projects. In its latest projects, the company has demonstrated efficiency and commitment to value creation, respecting a strict capital allocation policy and producing secure returns for its shareholders. 30/06/2022Iberdrola launches the world's first commercial-scale battery system in Ireland Iberdrola has started up its first commercial-scale battery system in Ireland. This 50-megawatt (MW) facility with 25MWh of power capacity, called Gorman, is also the first renewable project built by the company in Ireland in more than 25 years. Located in County Meath, in the east of Ireland, the system is made up of more than 4,000 modules in 16 containers, which occupy an area the size of a football pitch. The project, the first of its kind in Ireland, required an investment of 28 million euros. Its commissioning marks the culmination of the main initiative of the DS3 programme developed by Ireland's two transmission grid operators - EirGrid and SONI - to reinforce the grid in the face of increased renewable generation. Specifically, the Gorman battery will serve EirGrid for six years, contributing to the security and sustainability of the Irish electricity grid and the achievement of the Irish Government's 2050 emissions neutrality target. The company plans to expand this storage system in the future to double its capacity to 100 MW. Storage systems are key to addressing the challenge of the energy transition and are set to become an essential element in the electricity system because they improve the quality of electricity supply, ensure grid stability and reliability by balancing supply and demand, and guarantee the availability of additional green power when needed. Commitment to storage Energy storage is one of the Iberdrola group's strategic commitments for the coming years. The company has already secured a global battery capacity of 193 MW. This technology will increase significantly in the future, with a portfolio of 1,100 MW. Of these, 900 MW correspond to initiatives in the United Kingdom; 100 MW to projects in Spain and Portugal and another 100 MW to installations in Australia. The company also maintains its commitment to storage through electric pumping, where Iberdrola is the leader with an installed capacity of close to 4,500 MW, in projects such as Cortes-La Muela (Valencia) - the largest installation of these characteristics in Europe - and the Tâmega complex under construction in Portugal. This gigabattery represents an investment of more than €1.5 billion, and includes the construction of three dams and three power plants (Gouvães - which has already been commissioned -, Daivões and Alto Tâmega) with a combined capacity of 1,158 MW. This large renewable infrastructure will have enough storage capacity to serve two million Portuguese households for an entire day. The complex will contribute 880 MW of pumping capacity to the Portuguese electricity system, an increase of more than 30% over the megawatts of pumping currently available. Ireland, a platform for renewable growth Ireland is one of the Iberdrola group's main platforms for growth in renewables. The company has plans to develop 3,000 MW of offshore wind projects in Ireland, together with DP Energy. These are the Inis Ealga floating offshore wind farms off the south coast of Co. Cork and Clarous off the west coast of Co. Clare, and the Shelmalere fixed foundation offshore wind farm off the east coast of Ireland. Each of these projects will have an installed capacity of 1,000 MW, enough to jointly supply more than 2.8 million homes with clean energy. The Iberdrola group plans to invest up to €100 million in new onshore renewable and storage projects in Ireland by 2025. Iberdrola's initiatives in Ireland include the repowering and hybridisation with batteries of the Barnesmore wind farm in County Donegal (Ireland), Rigged Hill, Corkey, Elliots Hill and Callagheen in Northern Ireland. The company's sustainable growth strategy based on promoting the electrification of the economy through investment in renewable energies, electricity grids and energy storage has enabled it to become a global energy leader and the first in its sector in Europe by capitalisation, with a stock market value of around €70 billion. 29/06/2022At the CEO Alliance for Europe, Galán advocates more investment and more Europe to provide security and a future for citizens The Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, today hosted the meeting of the CEO Alliance for Europe, the cross-sectoral group made up of some of the continent's largest companies, where he called for accelerating the transformation of industry towards new, more sustainable models that stimulate growth, create quality jobs, ensure energy supply, protect the environment and maximise the contribution of companies to society. The meeting, which was held at Iberdrola's headquarters in Madrid, was opened by the Minister, Reyes Maroto, who highlighted the Government's shock plans to tackle the "uncertain" moment we are living through as a result of the war in Ukraine and agreed that the emergency measures must also include a "long-range" approach. This is in line with the Alliance's goal to make the EU the world's leading climate protection region, while unlocking investment, boosting innovation in new technologies and creating future-proof jobs. For Galán, the CEO Alliance's mission "is to continue working together and collaborate with national and European authorities to achieve public policies that will help us attract more investment to the continent and accelerate our transformation and the decarbonisation of Europe, because we believe this is the best way to create jobs and the future". Created in 2020 against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and the historic Green Deal, the Alliance is made up of 14 leading European companies representing all major industrial sectors, from automotive to telecoms, technology and electricity, with some 2 million employees and annual revenues of €560 billion. The group believes that the vision of a more prosperous, sustainable and resilient Europe, focused on decarbonisation and digitalisation, will require a collective effort by all member states, but also collaboration between the public sector and industry. In this respect, the Alliance is already undertaking joint projects that focus on the future competitiveness of green technologies. In October 2021, E. ON, Enel and Iberdrola, together with ABB and SAP, announced their cooperation to build a green hydrogen value chain - leveraging their competitive advantage in renewable energy production in Southern Europe - to supply green hydrogen and green ammonia to industrial sites in Central and Northern Europe. The group was also responsible for the agreement between Iberdrola and H2 Green Steel to build a green hydrogen plant to be located on the Iberian Peninsula, with a capacity of 1,000 MW and an estimated investment of 2.3 billion euros. It will power a furnace to produce around 2 million tonnes of pure green steel per year, achieving a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions. The plenary, moderated by the former European Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard, and chaired by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto - who signed the company's Book of Honour. Members of the alliance are the Chairman of Volkswagen AG and the European CEO Alliance, Herbert Diess, Morten Wierod (ABB Group); Henrik Henriksson (H2 Green Steel); Frans Van Houten (Royal Philips Electronics); Leonhard Birnbaum (E. ON); Christian Levin (Scania Group); Peter Weckesser (Schneider Electric); Börje Ekholm (Ericsson); Anders Danielsson (Skanska); Andrea Orcel (UniCredit) and, telematically, Thierry Vanlancker (Akzo Nobel NV) and Francesco Starace (Enel Group). 24/06/2022Iberdrola aims to make the agricultural and livestock sectors 100% green Iberdrola is fully committed to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, and to this end has launched a new challenge . The goal is for the supply of clean and sustainable competitive energy to be compatible with the balance of the environment and the preservation of biodiversity by 2030. With this challenge, promoted by the energy company's start-up programme, PERSEO , together with ASAJA and the start-up accelerator of the Junta de Castilla y León through the Institute for Business Competitiveness (ICE), WOLARIA, Iberdrola is seeking solutions to decarbonise and electrify the agricultural and livestock sectors through renewable energies and sustainable practices. The company has carried out more than 1,450 actions to protect biodiversity by combining the development of renewable projects with the conservation of the diversity of flora and fauna and the care of natural heritage. In addition, it aims to reforest 20 million trees by the end of the decade, capable of capturing some six million tonnes of CO2 in 30 years. The challenge is to support zero-emission agriculture and livestock farming with energy efficiency solutions, self-consumption and sustainable mobility, as well as other measures in favour of biodiversity, CO2 capture, circular economy and the promotion of new zero-emission fertilisers. Thus, the challenge is divided into five categories: measures to improve energy efficiency and self-consumption that reduce emissions from energy for air conditioning, irrigation and other processes in rural areas; achieving sustainable mobility and the electrification of agricultural machinery to reduce emissions from the use of fuels for mobility and agricultural work; reducing greenhouse gases and improving biodiversity through formulas that allow CO2 sequestration in soils and the generation of carbon credits; promoting the circular economy with business models that allow zero-emission management of agricultural and livestock waste, as well as emissions from animal digestive processes, with the aim of achieving carbon-neutral products, and reducing emissions associated with synthetic fertilisers. A team formed by Iberdrola, ASAJA and WOLARIA - the start-up accelerator of the Junta of Castile and León that works to strengthen the business network in the region and promotes businesses with high growth potential - will select the project that achieves the aforementioned objectives. The selected initiative will be developed in collaboration with experts from Iberdrola's different businesses and with strategic advice from WOLARIA. In addition, the company could offer the winner the opportunity to scale up the solution, adopting it through commercial agreements or even investing in the company. The winner of the challenge, for which the registration period has already started and will end on 10 July, will be announced in August. The call for entries will be global in scope. 15 years innovating with start-ups Since its creation in 2008, PERSEO has invested more than 100 million euros in start-ups that develop innovative technologies and business models, focusing on those that improve the sustainability of the energy sector through further electrification and decarbonisation of the economy. The programme has focused its activities on analysing business opportunities and technological collaboration with start-ups and emerging companies around the world, analysing 300 companies each year and creating an ecosystem of almost 7,000 entrepreneurial companies. This investment instrument currently holds a portfolio of eight companies. Through PERSEO, Iberdrola carries out more than 25 real tests of technologies per year, which serve as a first step towards establishing a commercial relationship or partnership with start-ups. In addition, in the last two years the group has launched a total of fourteen challenges in which 700 start-ups have participated. Beyond the financial contribution, PERSEO's support to these companies has been key in defining their product and business, offering them its knowledge and access to Iberdrola's market. On the other hand, the work carried out with the start-ups has served Iberdrola as a technological antenna to find out where their sector is heading. Renewable energy, agriculture and livestock farming: symbiosis is possible The coexistence of crop and grassland and solar photovoltaic installations is moving towards the sustainability of both sectors. Renewable energy and the primary sector are proving that they not only coexist in the same space, but complement and benefit from each other's actions . The dual use of land for agriculture and energy relieves pressure on ecosystems and biodiversity, which are affected when cultivation areas are expanded. Iberdrola is involved in numerous initiatives that combine the installation of renewable projects with the generation and use of the ecosystem services generated at its plants, such as the use of livestock, beekeeping, and cultivation of aromatic herbs. The development of photovoltaic plants is making them true refuges for biodiversity, through the creation and conservation of ecosystems and the absence of human activity inside the enclosures. 21/06/2022Iberdrola donates Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau's painting "El Regreso" (The Return) to the Centro Superior de Estudios de la Defensa Nacional (Higher Centre for National Defence Studies) From today, the main hall of the Higher Centre for National Defence Studies (CESEDEN) is displaying the work of the painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, a specialist in historical battles, "El Regreso" (The Return). The hyperrealist painting, which narrates one of the most important events of the Spanish army, was unveiled by the painter himself and by the chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, who donated the painting to the institution. Iberdrola, as an innovative and global company, is also proud of its tradition and maintains a clear objective of public service to the Spanish people. And this afternoon it demonstrated this at an event at CESEDEN, in which the Chairman of Europe's largest electricity company, Ignacio Galán, unveiled the painting "El Regreso" (The Return) by Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau. Iberdrola has thus donated this work of art to the main joint military educational centre of the Spanish Armed Forces. In the presence of Lieutenant General Francisco de Paula Bisbal Pons, Director of CESEDEN, Admiral General Teodoro Esteban López Calderón, Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD), and the author of the painting, Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, Ignacio Galán stressed that Iberdrola is an innovative and global company that shares with the Armed Forces values such as a sense of duty, solidarity and the constant search for excellence. Galán also reiterated Iberdrola's vocation of service and commitment to citizens and highlighted the fact that the electricity company has been working closely with the Armed Forces for years, with a multitude of initiatives for the exchange of knowledge and best practices. In this regard, the Chairman of Iberdrola gave as an example that the company and the Military Emergency Unit provide mutual technical and logistical support and carry out training activities and emergency drills. The Chairman of Iberdrola said that he was proud to donate to CESEDEN the painting "The Return" by the great painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, a work that combines unquestionable artistic value with a vindication of the greatness of Spanish history. Ignacio Galán added that the painting depicts Spain's support for the independence of the United States of America, a fact that Iberdrola has always tried to highlight. Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, master of historical painting, received words of thanks from the president of Iberdrola, who pointed out that the painter has managed to convey, always with honesty and realism, the images of a long and brilliant military past, both in victory and defeat. In the past, Iberdrola has promoted, for example, the exhibition "Bernardo de Gálvez and the presence of Spain in Mexico and the United States", which highlighted the career of one of the most brilliant military men the Spanish army has ever had, and the exhibition "Memory Regained", which His Majesty the King visited in person in New Orleans. In March 2021, the Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, and the Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD), Admiral General Teodoro Esteban López Calderón, on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, signed a collaboration agreement with the aim of developing research and training programmes in different areas of interest to both parties. The agreement ratified the commitment of both entities to consolidate public-private R&D&I schemes that enable the exchange of knowledge, provide institutions with new tools to improve the performance of their duties and enhance the competitiveness of companies. This agreement includes the financing of training activities, such as doctorates and master's degrees, as well as the implementation of new technologies to develop e-learning in the Armed Forces.
