11/02/2025 - 16:23 UTC +01:00Iberdrola leads S&P's Sustainability Yearbook 2025 Iberdrola leads the electricity industry in the Sustainability Yearbook 2025, prepared by S&P, with the Top 1% S&P Global CSA Score. Europe's largest electric utility by stock market value obtained the best score in the Dow Jones Best-in-Class Indices, the former Dow Jones Sustainability Index. The Sustainability Yearbook 2025 is a yearbook that includes 780 companies selected through the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) 2024 methodology, which ranks the companies analysed by industry. The CSA is the leading assessment formula in its field, helping companies to make the link between sustainability and their business strategies. Covering more than 13,000 companies worldwide, it is an annual review of companies' sustainability practices and allows companies' performance to be compared across a wide range of industry-specific economic, environmental and social criteria. These criteria are relevant to the growing number of sustainability-focused investors and are expected to be financially relevant to their corporate success. This leadership comes on top of the fact that Iberdrola has been in the Dow Jones Best-in-Class Indices for 25 consecutive years, making it the only European utility that has on the index this entire time. The electricity company, one of the three largest in the world with a value of around €87 B, has fulfilled the S&P requirements that determine the members of the index. It complies with an increasingly demanding methodology that includes more than 120 sections related to sustainability, distributed into three general pillars: respect for the environment, social commitment and good corporate governance. Iberdrola is a global benchmark in sustainability. It has once again received the highest "A List" from CPD rating in the list of the world's most transparent companies in climate change thanks to its commitment to disclosure, transparency, and environmental action. In addition to the Dow Jones Best-in-Class, it is on the main international sustainability indices such as Moody's ESG, MSCI, Sustainalytics, ISS-ESG, EcoVadis and FTSE4Good, among many others. Self-sufficiency and combating climate change Iberdrola continues to advance in its commitment to energy self-sufficiency and in its proactive role as an active agent in the fight against climate change. This investment will accelerate access to aerothermal energy for residential customers in Spain. Nido's turnover has quadrupled since its founding in 2023, reaching €1 M in sales in 2024, its first full fiscal year. The platform has facilitated aerothermal installations in 10 autonomous communities in Spain. Aerothermal energy is around four times more efficient than a conventional boiler, since 75% of the energy it uses is pulled from the air. That means that these installations will reduce emissions by more than 420 tonnes of CO₂ a year. Nido automatically generates the entire installation execution process and installation guides in seconds, cutting execution times by up to 75% and allowing any company in the industry to offer aerothermal solutions quickly and accurately, thanks to its 3D BIM technology. The startup will use the capital injection to integrate AI into its platform, expand its engineering team and optimise its marketplace to connect installers, suppliers and customers. Key to growth This investment by Perseo complements the plan launched by Iberdrola España to strengthen the competitiveness of aerothermal energy compared to fossil fuels. The value proposition includes equipment supply and installation, as well as the necessary maintenance services, and offers rates (Aerotermia Smart Savings Plan ) that allow households with these HVAC systems to save. The electricity company brings together all current state incentives and mechanisms, which it manages and processes for the customer's convenience, as well as including additional promotions, interest-free financing solutions, €800 discounts off electricity bills and the inclusion of a direct discount on the price of aerothermal energy of up to €2,000 by granting Energy Saving Certificates, among others. Iberdrola's plan is to increase the installation of solutions that help to decarbonise demand, and aerothermal energy plays a key role in enabling highly efficient electrification of heat generation. Driving energy startups Since its creation in 2008, Perseo has invested more than €200 M in startups that develop innovative technologies and business models, focusing on those that improve the sustainability of the energy industry through further electrification and decarbonisation of the economy. This distinction confirms the excellence and innovation of one of the largest hydroelectric projects carried out in Europe in the last three decades, consolidating Iberdrola's position as a benchmark in the sector in Portugal. The APRH Award for Hydraulic Projects aims to recognise and reward the originality and overall quality of single or multi-purpose hydraulic infrastructures for the development or control of water resources and the management or rehabilitation of aquatic environments. Rafael Chacón, director of the Alto Tâmega project, said that "the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric complex is a 100% greenfield project led by Iberdrola and developed from scratch by an interdisciplinary team of more than 100 specialists, highlighting the company's leading role in hydropower. This award recognises not only Iberdrola's enormous technical, business and financial capacity, but also its fundamental role in the transition towards a sustainable energy model through renewable energy storage". Vítor Afonso, Alto Tâmega's operations manager, stresses that "the Gouvães pumping station, which is part of Alto Tâmega, is a plant that offers a lot of flexibility, and can go from pumping 880 MW to generating 880 MW in a few minutes, which is essential to ensure reliable energy supply in a decarbonised electricity system, where the wind and photovoltaic contribution can fluctuate by several thousand MW in a few hours". The award will be presented by the Portuguese Water Resources Association during the 17th Water Congress, which will take place from 8 to 11 April 2025 in Lagos, Algarve. Prior to the official award ceremony, the APRH will visit the plant to install a plaque commemorating the Hydraulic Projects award. This action underlines the association's recognition of the project’s impact, considered a milestone in the hydroelectric sector and energy sustainability in Portugal. Tâmega Hydroelectric Complex The Tâmega hydroelectric power plant is one of the largest hydroelectric projects in Europe in the last 25 years. With a total investment of more than €1.5 B, it consists of three power plants: the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric power plant, with an installed capacity of 160 MW, the Gouvães pumped storage power plant (880 MW) and the Daivões power plant (118 MW). The latter two have been in operation since 2022. The Gouvães reversible hydropower plant, with its pumping capacity that turns it into a gigabattery, can store up to 20 GWh of renewable energy at peak production times and use it later when demand is higher and intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind cannot be relied on. The three plants have an installed capacity of 1,158 MW and an annual production capacity of up to 1,766 GWh, enough to meet the energy needs of neighbouring municipalities, as well as the cities of Braga and Guimarães (440,000 households). In addition, this renewable infrastructure has a storage capacity of up to 40 million kWh, equivalent to the energy consumed by 11 million people over 24 hours in their homes. The Tâmega plant will eliminate the emission of 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 a year and diversify production sources, preventing the import of more than 160,000 tonnes of oil a year. The positive impact on the region has activated the economy, creating up to 3,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect ones throughout its construction, 20% of which will come from neighbouring municipalities, through more than 100 suppliers, 75 of them Portuguese. 07/02/2025 - 10:13 UTC +01:00The joint venture between bp and Iberdrola España starts construction work on Spain's largest green hydrogen plant The joint venture between bp and Iberdrola España has announced the start of construction work on Spain's largest green hydrogen project with 25 MW. This plant could create up to 500 jobs during its construction and approximately 25 Spanish companies will be involved in the work. The first phase consists of earthworks and the development of an approximately 20,000 m2 plot of land next to the bp refinery in Castellón. The civil works will begin in the second quarter of the year. The next milestone of the project will be the reception and installation of the first main equipment, including the electrolysers , which is expected to take place in the second half of 2025. This equipment allows the production of green hydrogen through a chemical process (electrolysis) capable of separating the hydrogen and oxygen molecules of which water is composed using electricity from renewable sources. Carolina Mesa, bp's vice president of hydrogen for Spain and new markets, said, "The start of construction of the largest green hydrogen plant in Spain is great news, because it allows us to see tangible progress in an important industrial decarbonisation project. The bp refinery in Castellón consolidates itself as a model for the transformation of refineries into integrated energy hubs”. Jorge Palomar Herrero, Director of Hydrogen Development at Iberdrola said, "This project is already enabling the real development of the hydrogen value chain in our country with key equipment manufactured in Spain and contracting more than 25 local companies. The project also brings in 200 GWh/year of renewable energy from Iberdrola's wind and photovoltaic plants in Spain and meets all EU requirements to ensure that the hydrogen produced is green hydrogen". The announcement strengthens bp and Iberdrola's leadership in the hydrogen sector, an energy vector that has the potential to play a significant role in the decarbonisation of industry . In addition, Iberdola and bp continue to advance their partnership to accelerate electric mobility and lead high-power public charging in Spain and Portugal. Spain's largest green hydrogen plant The project has an investment of more than €70 M and is being developed jointly by bp and Iberdrola España through Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L., a company equally owned by both companies. The plant is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026. The 25 MW electrolyser will be powered by renewable electricity through a power purchase agreement (PPA) supplied by Iberdrola from photovoltaic and wind farms. The production of 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen a year is expected to replace part of the grey hydrogen currently used by the refinery in its processes and is expected to prevent the emission of approximately 23,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, or the same amount as 5,000 cars produce in the same period. In later phases of the project, the green hydrogen produced could also be used in key industries that are difficult to decarbonise in the Valencian Community, like ceramics, to replace the natural gas used in their processes, in chemical industries and in heavy transport. This initiative, with the participation of the Instituto Tecnológico de la Energía (ITE), has obtained funding equivalent to €15 M from the Innovative Value Chain and Renewable Hydrogen Knowledge support programmes within the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with funds allocated by the European Union's NextGenerationEU. Confidence in Spanish companies The companies recently awarded the manufacture and supply of the transformer to the Spanish company Imefy. Based in Toledo, the La Mancha-based company will manufacture, supply and supervise assembly and commissioning of the three-phase power transformer, with 37 megavolt amperes (MVA) of power and 66/30 kilovolts (kV) of transformation ratio. It will be supplied in the first quarter of 2026. This award demonstrates the confidence of bp and Iberdrola, through the company created for the Castellón Green Hydrogen project, in Spanish companies in the development of the renewable hydrogen value chain, strengthening industry in the region and creating industrial and innovation opportunities in a growing market, acting as a lever for development. 06/02/2025 - 16:51 UTC +01:00Ignacio Galán calls on Europe for “long-term” strategies and not “last-minute” decisions The Executive Chairman of Iberdrola , Ignacio Galán, has called on the European political authorities to develop "long-term" energy strategies, as opposed to "last-minute" decisions, to give the sector the "predictability and stability" it needs to make investments. Galán was speaking at the International Energy Policy Forum 2025, organised by the British newspaper Financial Times, in Brussels, and whose speakers also included Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency; Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing; Irene Heemskerk, head of the ECB’s Climate Change Centre; Kristian Ruby, Secretary General of Eurelectric, and Ann Mettler, Vice-President for Europe of Breakthrough Energy. "Our investment decisions are made with 40 or 60-year time frames. We cannot live in an environment where decisions are made depending on last-minute problems and circumstances", the Chairman said. "We need predictability, stability, the rule of law and an environment in which we can easily do our job". Throughout his speech, Ignacio Galán argued for greater energy autonomy for Europe, as opposed to dependence on third parties and natural gas, which undermines the continent’s competitiveness. In this regard, he pointed to electrification as a solution, which he said is "unstoppable" in Europe, where there is an "enormous demand waiting to be connected" to the grid; but "for that it is necessary to provide access to an infrastructure that is sufficiently large, strong and reliable". In the same way, he insisted that the renewables sector requires "a stable and predictable framework" and warned that, "if the rules change because of any political situation, the money will go elsewhere". Galán emphasised that renewables are efficient and competitive and that they "allow for energy autonomy". For this reason, "we must invest in networks, renewables and storage", because electrification in Europe means security, independence and self-sufficiency. Galán considered that Europe has "a structural problem", due to the lack of gas reserves. "Countries that have them start from a competitive advantage. The more gas we import, the less competitive we will be." "Europe wants to be more competitive. Europe wants to be number 1", but "we have to be convinced that this is a must", he said. "Europe doesn’t want to be just a destination for holidays and beautiful monuments—we want to be an industrial and technological hub, an attractive region for young people". He also stressed the importance of decarbonisation as a synonym for self-sufficiency, the need to be independent from third parties in terms of energy and the duty to promote local industry and the value chain. In this sense, he argued that it is "crucial" that Europe "maintains its current capacities" and promotes new ones to reduce its dependence on the outside. Regarding Donald Trump’s new US administration, he pointed out that Iberdrola has been in the country for more than 20 years and has invested 45 billion dollars, and recalled that during the President’s first term in the White House, the company "continued to invest in renewables and networks". In any case, he repeated, the bulk of the business in the country, the networks, depends on the regulation of the States and not of the federal Government, adding that it is necessary to wait to see if Trump decides to continue with the "support plans" for the sector or not. With regard to renewables, he said that the main customers are large companies such as Amazon, Google and Apple, which demand clean electricity.
