30/06/2017Iberdrola invested nearly 540 million euros in the automation, development and improvement of its electricity grid in Spain in 2016 Iberdrola Distribución closed the 2016 financial year having earmarked investment of 537 million euros for the improvement of its distribution network and the gradual introduction of smart electricity grids in Spain. The company, which operates in ten autonomous communities[1] and distributes electric power in 25 provinces, increased its investment by 8% for the 2015 financial year - an investment of 497 million euros - showing the company's commitment to the ongoing improvement of the distribution network and the quality of supply that it offers to the nearly 11 million supply points that it manages in Spain: Of these 537 million euros invested in Spain last year, 128 million were earmarked for the STAR project (Network Remote Management and Automation System), Iberdrola's ambitious initiative that complements the legal obligation to change electricity meters. With the replacement of analogue meters for digital ones with powers equal to or less than 15 kilowatts and that, in the case of IBERDROLA has gone up to 10.6 million devices, the company spent close to 100 million euros during 2016, surpassing the figure of 9.5 million digital meters, 90% of its total number of meters in Spain. In addition, IBERDROLA allocated 124 million euros to the construction and commissioning of new infrastructure, mainly electricity distribution substations, very high, high, medium and low voltage power lines - both aerial and underground - and transformation centres. In addition, the company has invested 145 million euros in the renewal of facilities, as well as another 40 million in the improvement of the communications network and IT development. This significant effort, which the company has been developing in Spain, translates into an investment of close to 2,000 million euros that it allocated to its distribution network during the period 2013-2016. Improvement in the quality of the electricity supply in 2016 As a result of the ongoing automation of the network, the development of smart grids and investment in new facilities and the renovation of existing facilities, IBERDROLA achieved a 15% improvement in the quality of the power supply it offers to its customers in Spain during 2016, against the previous financial year. The company recorded a TIEPI (Interruption time Equivalent to the installed Capacity) of 53.2 minutes - compared to the 61.1 minutes of 2015 - resulting in the best supply quality data recorded by the company throughout its history. The future is moving towards increasingly smart, reliable and secure networks, challenges which Iberdrola Distribución addresses as a leading company in innovation to offer its customers and society in general a better service through its 24,000 kilometres of high and very high voltage lines; 304,000 kilometres of medium and low voltage lines, 953 transformation substations and 95,000 transformation centres. 23/06/2017Iberdrola, the first Spanish company to receive AENOR certification for anti-bribery management systems AENOR has granted Iberdrola UNE-ISO 37001 standard certification, through which it is verified that the company offers an effective anti-bribery management system, making it the first Spanish company, and one of the first in the world, to obtain such a recognition. This is the international standard that specifies requirements and provides a guide to establish, implement, maintain, revise and improve the mechanisms to combat bribery practices in companies. Iberdrola thereby continues to advance its commitment to the very best of international compliance practices reflecting many of its values, including ethical principles, transparency and sound corporate governance. Among the corporate governance and regulatory compliance policies the group relies upon there is the Crime Prevention Policy and the Anti-Corruption and Fraud Policy, both of which were approved by the company's Board of Directors in December 2010 and 2016, respectively. The first of these policies aims to transmit to all Iberdrola directors and employees, as well as to the third parties working with the company, a resounding message of total opposition to the commission of any illegal criminal act, as well as the will of the company to combat such and prevent any deterioration of its valuable image and reputation. Likewise, the second policy, seeks to convey Iberdrola's strong opposition to corruption and fraud in all its forms, and the will of the company to eradicate such from all its activities. In this context, the UNE-ISO 37001 standard certification granted by AENOR once again shows Iberdrola's commitment to international best practices in the fight against corruption and heralds the company as a leading light in this fight. 22/06/2017Iberdrola and MIT Energy Initiative Announce $10.3 Million Collaboration to Spur Energy and Environmental Innovation Building on a shared commitment to driving innovation and education in energy and climate solutions, MIT President L. Rafael Reif and Iberdrola Chairman and CEO Ignacio S. Galán met on MIT’s campus to renew and significantly expand the collaboration between the Institute and the global power company. The $10.3 million, five-year collaboration aims to advance technologies and policies that contribute to the energy transition and the fight against climate change, supporting numerous efforts through the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and related MIT initiatives. “Climate change and the policies created to address it have significant implications for businesses—it will fundamentally change products, services, and operating models,” said Galán. “Successful companies need to actively seek the opportunities a clean economy creates. Iberdrola constitutes a perfect example of the potential of the electricity sector. The company is a world leader in renewable energies, which represent almost 60 percent of Iberdrola’s mix, and we plan to reduce further our carbon dioxide emission intensity by at least 50 percent by 2030. MIT, one of the world's leading idea incubators, is the perfect research collaborator to deliver the technologies and solutions that will lead us towards a clean energy future.” “Strong industry collaborations are critical to achieving MIT's vision for a clean energy future,” says Reif. “By pairing the excellence of MIT's researchers with Iberdrola's embrace of clean energy infrastructure, we have an exciting opportunity to make important contributions to address climate change. We look forward to working with our Iberdrola colleagues to identify critical solutions to this complex global challenge.” Iberdrola will benefit from MIT’s advanced platform for research, development, and technological innovation to educate the workforce needed to build and operate tomorrow’s energy systems. The company also aims to achieve a competitive advantage by systematically improving its business performance and anticipating future market trends. The agreement reinforces the three main objectives that shape Iberdrola’s program with academic institutions: knowledge transfer, talent attraction, and contribution to the company’s social dividend. The agreement includes $5 million in funding to create the Iberdrola-AVANGRID professorship at MIT, dedicated to research and education in power systems engineering. Both MIT and Iberdrola recognize the urgent need to upgrade and modernize electricity infrastructure in the U.S. and globally, transforming power systems and creating the “utilities of the future.” To meet these challenges, industry and governments will need a new generation of young professionals ready to discover and implement innovative energy solutions. In addition to the professorship, Iberdrola is making a robust commitment to fund energy education opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students through MITEI. The agreement also includes training for Iberdrola Group employees as well as fellowships and internships at Iberdrola worldwide operating companies for MIT energy engineering students. Iberdrola will become a sustaining member of MITEI, committing $5 million over five years to advance key technologies and policies for addressing climate change. As part of its MITEI membership, Iberdrola will join MITEI’s Low-Carbon Energy Center for Electric Power Systems, the mission of which is to enable the efficient evolution of the electric grid and the electric power sector. It is one of eight collaborative low-carbon energy research centers announced in 2015 as part of MIT’s Plan for Action on Climate Change, a vital component of which is to deepen engagement with industry, government, and the philanthropic community to develop climate solutions. The energy education commitment is also part of this sustaining membership. As another element of its membership, Iberdrola will contribute to MITEI’s Seed Fund to support early-stage energy research at MIT. Through the agreement, Iberdrola will also expand its support of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research and will conduct sponsored research through the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change. To support energy entrepreneurship, the company will provide $300,000 to the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program, which connects MIT undergraduate and graduate students with tailored educational experiences and mentoring, and provides students with funding to start up innovative projects or entrepreneurial initiatives. This expanded collaboration follows Iberdrola’s multi-year sponsorship of MITEI’s Utility of the Future study and the corresponding report released in December 2016. The study—which MITEI conducted with Spain’s Institute for Research in Technology at Comillas Pontifical University (IIT-Comillas)—highlighted emerging trends in the electric power sector, where decarbonization, digitization, renewable energies and energy storage will continue to define the industry and determine a more flexible and efficient consumption of energy.
