27/11/2019Iberdrola makes €227M in purchases from suppliers for Núñez de Balboa The construction of the Núñez de Balbao photovoltaic project that Iberdrola is developing in Extremadura has injected life into the local industrial fabric and created local jobs, with purchases worth €227M from some 30 suppliers. The contractual requirements of its construction have contributed to bolstering the project’s local character, recruiting first from among local workers. The companies supplying products and services involved in its execution have participated in its construction, supply of photovoltaic modules, the fixed structure, inverters, transformers, and the civil works and engineering of the electrical lines and substation. In Núñez de Balbao recruiting prioritised local workers, up to 70% of the 1,200 recorded at peak times, from a total of 25 companies that participated in executing the civil works, cement manufacturing, ramming tests, topography and technical office, transport and forestry work. The Núñez de Balboa project is the biggest photovoltaic plant in Europe under construction (500 MW). It is scheduled to come on stream in the first quarter of 2020. At present, the entire foundation of the structure has been laid and more than 90% of its 1,430,000 photovoltaic panels have been assembled. The initiative has been promoted with the collaboration of Ecoenergías del Guadiana, in the form of a joint co-development fully respectful of the environment and land-use planning. The plant will generate enough clean energy to meet the needs of 250,000 people, more than the combined populations of the region's largest cities, Cáceres and Badajoz. It will avoid the emission of 215,000 metric tons of CO2 each year, strengthening Iberdrola's commitment to protecting the environment and mitigating global warming. More than 1,800 renewable MW under construction or in the pipeline In Extremadura, Iberdrola is building the Núñez de Balboa plant and has in the pipeline the photovoltaic plants Francisco Pizarro (590 MW), located in Torrecillas de la Tiesa, Ceclavín (328 MW) in Alcántara, and Arenales (150 MW) in Cáceres, as well as Campo Arañuelo I, II and III (150 MW) in the Almaraz administrative district, and two plants in Cedillo (100 MW). This brings the company's photovoltaic megawatts under construction or in the pipeline in the region to 1,800, making Extremadura the focus of Iberdrola's renewable strategy in Spain. Iberdrola plans for Campo Arañuelo (Arañuelo I, II, and III with 150 MW) to be the next photovoltaic project to be started. It includes a system that uses an innovative battery for power storage. Plan to relaunch clean energy in Spain Iberdrola's plan to invest in renewable energies in Spain includes the installation of 3,000 new MW by 2022. By 2030, company forecasts point to the installation of 10,000 new MW. These actions will enable jobs to be created for 20,000 people. In Spain, Iberdrola is the leader in renewable energies, with an installed capacity of 15,828 MW (over 30,300 MW worldwide), making its generation fleet one of the cleanest in the energy sector. Iberdrola's commitment to a decarbonised economic model has led it to earmark 34 billion euros for global investments between now and 2022 in renewable energies, smart and robust distribution networks, and storage technologies, all on top of the 100 billion it has already invested since 2001. 26/11/2019EIB grants EUR 50m loan to Iberdrola and Caja Rural de Navarra to build new wind complex in Navarra The European Investment Bank (EIB) has taken another step forward in the promotion of clean energy production in Spain. The EU bank will provide EUR 50m in financing to Renovables de la Ribera, a 50-50 joint venture between Iberdrola and Caja Rural de Navarra to build a new renewable energy project – the Cavar wind complex – in Navarra, Spain. The EIB is assisting this project via a Green Loan, the features of which are fully in line with the requirements set out in its Climate Awareness Bonds programme. As a result, it is likely to be allocated to its portfolio of loan operations financed via the issuance of these bonds. The new project, located between the municipalities of Cadreita and Valtierra, includes four wind farms and will have an installed capacity of 111 MW. Construction will enable the creation of up to 200 jobs and the complex is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2020. In this way, the EU bank financing provided to Renovables de la Ribera will help meet the goal proposed by the European Commission of generating 32% of the energy used in the EU using renewable sources by 2030. The new wind complex – which will not release any polluting emissions – will generate enough clean energy to meet the electricity needs of 46 500 people and will avoid the release 84 000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere a year. Cavar is also the first wind project in Spain to sell its energy to a large corporation. A long-term bilateral contract (a Power Purchase Agreement or PPA) will see it produce 40 MW of clean energy for Nike in Europe. EIB Vice-President Emma Navarro, who is responsible for climate action at the Bank, said: “Spain has major renewable energy potential, and the EIB wants to help it to become a reference point in the sector by providing investments to promote the transition to a low-carbon economy while simultaneously fostering growth and employment. Promoting clean energy generation is one of our key priorities. As part of its aim to establish itself as the EU climate bank, the EIB has reaffirmed its commitment to increasing its financing to support Europe in its plans to become the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050.” Iberdrola España CEO Ángeles Santamaría highlighted “the importance of access to climate financing instruments to accelerate the energy transition we need. These measures, together with emissions targets and the implementation of an environment-focused industrial and fiscal policy, will make it possible to move forward with the decarbonisation of our economy and climate change mitigation. In line with this commitment and an ambitious action plan, Iberdrola is making progress with major investment into renewables in Spain, where we plan to install 3 000 MW of new capacity by 2022 and up to 10 000 MW in 2030.” For Caja Rural de Navarra, “investment in this renewable energy production activity falls under our focus on environmental responsibility and support for regional business. This rural operation balances traditional farming with new, environmentally friendly forms of energy generation.” The EIB and climate action The EIB is among the world's largest multilateral providers of climate finance. The Bank's goal is to be a leader in mobilising the finance needed to keep global warming to under 2 ˚C and limit temperature rises to 1.5 ˚C to meet the Paris Agreement objectives. On 14 November, the EIB Board of Directors approved its new climate objectives and the new energy lending policy. The Bank will gradually increase its financing for climate and environmental objectives up to 50% by 2025, with the goal of ensuring that the EIB Group mobilises at least EUR 1bn by 2030 to promote investments helping to meet these objectives. It also announced its intention to align all EIB Group activities with the Paris Agreement. To this end, the EIB will cease financing fossil fuel-based projects from late 2021. In 2018, the EIB provided almost EUR 1.3bn to support climate action in Spain by financing projects involving the development of cleaner means of transport and implementation of new, less polluting and more environmentally friendly production processes. The European Investment Bank (ElB) is the long-term lending institution of the European Union owned by its Member States. It makes long-term finance available for sound investment in order to contribute towards EU policy objectives. READ MORE

25/11/2019Moving for Climate NOW starts its cycling route in Salamanca heading to the COP25 in Madrid The fifth Moving for Climate NOW cycling trip, promoted by Iberdrola with the support of the United Nations Climate Change and the COP25, is now under way. The Moving for Climate NOW team has today started pedalling on electric bicycles in Salamanca, from where they will travel 500 kilometres until arriving on Sunday 1 December in Madrid, where the Summit will begin the next day. There they will deliver their Manifesto to Combat Climate Change, which sets out, point by point, the fundamental principles on which this team considers that action must be taken to face the current climate challenges and meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement. In addition to the general director of Quality and Environmental Sustainability of the Junta de Castilla y León; Rubén Rodríguez; the councillor for the Environment of the Salamanca City Council, Miryam Rodríguez; the vice-rector of Students of the USAL, Ana Belén Ríos, and the director of Energy Policies and Climate Change of Iberdrola, Carlos Sallé, attended the departure event. Once again, this initiative is made up of a multidisciplinary cycling team of fifty people from different organisations and countries. Their objective is to raise awareness of the importance of the climate challenge, to unite efforts from all fields and to act with ambition and urgency to halt climate change. This Manifesto highlights the need to increase climate ambition and move towards scenarios that limit the increase in temperature below 1.5ºC, which is equivalent to achieving zero net emissions by 2050. To achieve this, they emphasise, fundamentally: * The urgency of uniting the efforts in all areas, ensuring support measures for the most vulnerable. * The importance of seeing the fight against climate change as an opportunity to build a sustainable economic model and not as a threat. * The need to accelerate the energy transition by committing to renewable energy. * The value of having nature as an ally. * The importance of mobilising resources to improve climate adaptation. Moving for Climate NOW is aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, this initiative is directly linked to Goal 13 -climate action- and 17 -alliances to achieve the goals-. It also contributes to points 5 -gender equality- and 7 -affordable and non-polluting energy-. The emissions during the trip have been calculated with CeroCO2 and the carbon footprint for the initiative has been compensated by purchasing carbon credits from the UN's Climate Neutral Now and CeroCO2 platforms. The fifth ‘Moving for Climate NOW’ Moving for Climate NOW is now celebrating its fifth trip, with the cycling team having already travelled more than 3,700 kilometres since the first one, which took them from Bilbao to COP21 in Paris. They then reached the COP22 in Marrakesh from Seville, the COP23 in Bonn from Paris and the COP24 in Katowice (Poland) from Vienna. During these past five years, Moving for Climate NOW has consisted of representatives from international organisations such as the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, the United Nations Convention for Climate Change (UNFCC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency; institutions such as the Spanish Office of Climate Change, the Moroccan Economic, Social and Environmental Council, the Biodiversity Foundation and Seville City Council; initiatives such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and the Carbon Disclosure Project, as well as civil society through NGOs including ECODES, Red Cross and Action Aid, opinion formers, athletes, research centres and universities such as the Universidad Pontificia Comillas and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. 24/11/2019i-DE launches the first battery storage system for electricity grids in Spain i-DE, Iberdrola's electricity distribution arm, has inaugurated the first electrical energy storage system with lithium-ion batteries for distribution networks in Spain. The project, which is the first in the country, is located in the Murcian municipal district of Caravaca de la Cruz and will improve the quality of the energy supply in the surrounding area, as well as the use of solar energy generated in the area. The storage system, with a capacity of 3 MWh, can operate in isolation and, in the event of an interruption in supply, will be able provide up to five hours of electricity to the main districts in the surrounding area: Cañada de la Cruz, Inazares, Moralejo, Barranda, El Moral and Los Royos. Adverse climate and rural environment The special circumstances in the rural environment around Caravaca de la Cruz have determined the choice of this enclave for this innovative solution. In recent years, the area has been recording very adverse weather conditions that cause incidents in the distribution network. Also, it is an area consisting of various small and scattered centres of consumption, so a fault can leave several villages without service. To this is added the long distances that have to be covered to reach the source of the problem, which further complicates the resolution of incidents. The traditional solution would have been to construct 22 km of overhead power lines, crossing environmental protection areas. This is the reason why an innovative solution was chosen, based on energy storage installed at a point where overhead cables intersect, allowing several areas to be served with a single battery. The project has shown that batteries can improve the continuity of supply in contingency situations, as well as the use of photovoltaic plants connected to the impacted grid, including in isolation using only renewable energy. The batteries, in short, constitute a complement to the conventional local operation. Smart storage system There are several large photovoltaic plants in Caravaca de la Cruz that upload electricity to the grid during the hours with the most intense sunlight. A battery with these characteristics is able to adjust the voltage to the appropriate values and be ready to intervene as a second source of power supply in the event of a power failure. To achieve this, it has a smart storage system that is able to assess the situation and decide what part of the network will remain in operation from the battery, taking into account actual consumption at that time, the generation capacity of photovoltaic plants nearby and the state of charge of the battery, among other aspects. The system estimates both the consumption and the potential renewable generation power of the solar plants in the area at that time and for the following hours. It can, thus, take advantage of local power generation and, in addition, absorb excess energy, in case of excess production. The combination of this battery and the electricity produced by the photovoltaic plants in the area will significantly reduce the interruption times in the power supply during an emergency. Storage and grids, the keys to the energy model of the future Storage systems are key to addressing the challenges of the energy transition and are destined to become an essential element in the electrical system of the future. This is because they allow the quality of the electricity supply to be improved, ensuring the stability and reliability of the network and integrating and harnessing the energy generated by renewable sources. Iberdrola is a leader in energy storage, with an installed pumping technology capacity of 4,400 MW, which is currently the most efficient method. It is also undertaking numerous initiatives that combine the use of batteries with renewable energy – wind and photovoltaic – projects, as well as those oriented towards improving the quality of the supply by its grids, as is the case with the installation in Caravaca de La Cruz. Electricity distribution networks are the circulatory system in the new energy model and an essential platform in the transition toward a decarbonised economy based on competitive, renewable energy. Transforming the grids into smart infrastructure responds to the challenges of an electrified economy, with greater integration of renewables, sustainable mobility, smart cities and consumption models and distributed generation. In this context, i-DE has allocated 2 billion euros to digitising its electricity networks, with the installation of almost 11 million digital meters, together with the infrastructure that supports them, and the adaptation of around 90,000 transformer centres in Spain, to which it has incorporated remote management, supervision and automation capabilities. It is also currently working on the digitalisation of the low voltage network and is investing in control and operation systems. i-DE, Smart Electricity Grids The activities of i-DE – the new name for Iberdrola's electricity distribution arm – include the planning, construction and maintenance of power lines, substations, transformer centres and other infrastructure, as well as operating the system in a way that efficiently distributes energy among the various agents that produce and consume it. Iberdrola operates a distribution system consisting of 270,000 km of power lines in Spain and is present in 10 Autonomous Regions serving a population of 17 million. In 2018, Iberdrola's distribution business invested almost €500 m in Spain in projects designed to improve its procedures and customer service channels; complete the roll-out of nearly 11 million smart meters and the supervision and automation of the grid. Iberdrola's network business is a significant driver of the Spanish economy, generating more than 10,000 jobs in total (both direct and through its suppliers). In 2018, the company made purchases to the value of €500 m from 2,000 local companies. READ MORE

19/11/2019Iberdrola and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) sign a cooperation agreement to boost equality in sport Iberdola and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) have signed a cooperation agreement today which is intended to bolster equality in sport, encouraging female athletes to become an inspiration for other women and society. This way, the agreement grants Iberdrola the condition of a partner for the COE's gender equality strategy. This agreement, which is in alignment with the commitment of both organisations to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) no. 5: Gender equality, was signed this morning at the company's offices in Madrid by the president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán and the president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco. The event also hosted Victoria Cabezas, general secretary of the COE, Isabel Fernández, senior vice-president of the COE, judo athlete and twice Olympic medallist (bronze at Atlanta 1996 and gold at Sydney 2000) and Isabel García, president of the Commission for Women and Gender Equality of the COE, president of the Royal Spanish Federation of Rescue and Lifesaving and vice-president of the COE. After signing, Galán pointed out that "at Iberdrola we are sure that sport is one of the best vehicles to use for encouraging equality between men and women, which is the fifth SDG and an indisputable principle for our company, which bolsters equal opportunities, encourages reconciliation and strengthens the full development of all its workers". Within the framework of this agreement, Iberdrola and the COE want to launch a Gender Equality programme in sport which will become a reference point for the rest of Spanish society and will involve both technical training and empowerment and specific actions (round tables or conferences) to encourage the visibility of women in sport. This initiative will also be presented to the Gender Equality Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for it to set an example for the global Olympic movement. Likewise, Iberdola, an international pioneer for sustainability[i], will become a partner in the COE's strategy in this regard, which will imply its active participation in presenting the Annual Sustainability Report of the Committee itself, as well as its support for the initiatives it promotes together with the United Nations Global Pact to implement the SDGs in the sports corporate sector and for female athletes acting as ambassadors for sustainability. Iberdrola launches the digital eco-system "Ellas valen oro" (Women are worth gold) Within the framework of this strong push towards bolstering women in sport, Iberdrola has launched the digital eco-system Ellas valen oro (Women are worth gold) today, through which it is able to strengthen the dissemination of information about female athletes for the next Olympic Games, which will take place in Tokyo between 24th July and 9th August next year. This platform, which includes a website (www.ellasvalenoro.es ) and social media profiles (Twitter https://twitter.com/ellasvalenoro ), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/ellasvalenoro/ ) and Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/ellasvalenoro ), as well as other actions to give female athletes more visibility, is intended to publicise not only their achievements and milestones in each discipline, but also the personal stories underlying them. With the cooperation of different federations and players, Ellas valen oro (Women are worth gold) will include videos, photos, reports and interviews that will talk about the women's path towards the Olympic Games, from their dedicated preparation to their classification, culminating in their participation in the Olympic Games in the Japanese capital. Iberdrola is also expected to implement digital actions to promote support for female athletes from the Spanish population. Sport, crucial for promoting equality Both signing the agreement with the COE and launching this digital eco-system are a further demonstration of the company's commitment to women's sport. In 2016 Iberdrola became the first company to make a strong, and successful, global commitment to encouraging women’s participation in sport as a way of promoting equal opportunities. Iberdrola currently supports 16 federations: gymnastics, triathlon, rugby, canoeing, badminton, football, handball, volleyball, hockey, table tennis, athletics, karate, boxing, surfing, ice sports and fencing. Iberdrola also lends its name to 22 national top-tier sports leagues, and over 35 competitions.
