24/07/2020Iberdrola and Fertiberia launch the largest plant producing green hydrogen for industrial use in Europe Iberdrola and Fertiberia are allied in their commitment to the sustainability of the industrial sector. The companies have signed an agreement, which will trigger an investment of 150 million euros, to construct the largest plant to produce green hydrogen for industrial use in Europe. The Spanish companies are to build the plant in Puertollano and it will be operational in 2021. Iberdrola will be responsible for the production of green hydrogen from 100 % renewable sources. The solution will consist of a 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant, a lithium-ion battery system with a storage capacity of 20 MWh and one of the largest electrolytic hydrogen production systems in the world (20 MW). The green hydrogen produced will be used at Fertiberia's ammonia plant in Puertollano. This plant is already one of the most efficient in the European Union, with a production capacity of more than 200,000 t/year. Fertiberia will update and modify the plant to be able to use the green hydrogen produced to manufacture green fertilizers. Fertiberia will be able to reduce natural gas requirements at the plant by over 10 % and will be the first European company in the sector to develop expertise in large-scale green ammonia generation. The project will take place in the municipality of Puertollano, in Ciudad Real, a prime location with a large industrial hub near to the National Hydrogen Centre, which has advised from the very beginning of the project. Its development and construction will generate 700 jobs and, once operational, will avoid 39,000 the emission of tCO2/year[1]. “Today we are launching the first major green hydrogen project in Europe, demonstrating that thanks to renewables and technological innovation, it is possible to continue to meet the needs of the electrification and decarbonisation of our industry. The initiative shows the path and opportunities offered by the energy transition to develop innovative projects as the focus for industrialisation and employment in our country”, explains Iberdrola chairman Ignacio Galán. "The partnership with Iberdrola allows Fertiberia to take a further step in its ambition to become a european reference for sustainable solutions for agriculture and to lead the paradigm shift required for the energy transition in the chemical sector, thanks to the manufacture of green ammonia from domestic renewable energy sources", indicates Javier Goñi, the president of Fertiberia. Advancing in technological maturity to decarbonise the industry The project will help move forward in maturing the technology for green hydrogen production and turn it into a solution for efficient decarbonisation in the medium term, both for the industry that uses it as a raw material and for processes that are difficult to decarbonise. Annual hydrogen production in Spain is estimated at 0.5 Mt H2/year, which is used as a raw material in the refining, chemical and fertilizer industries. Most of it has fossil fuel origin, and generates emissions of 5 Mt CO2/year. Annual global H2 production (70 Mt) represents CO2 emissions of 830 Mt/year or, in other words, it is responsible for over 2 % of emissions generated in the world; a figure similar to those emitted by a country the size of Germany. It is estimated that decarbonising global hydrogen production through the use of 100 % renewable energy would also increase electricity demand by over 10 %. Further details: Key data on Europe's most ambitious green hydrogen innovation project Renewables for a green recovery Electrification is an essential lever for economic recovery and employment. This is the reason behind Iberdrola's record 10,000 million euros investment this year, mobilising projects, industrial activity in the value chain and innovation in renewable energy, smart grids and large-scale storage systems. The company is also working on European initiatives to promote innovation in this area and has recently joined the Choose Renewable Hydrogen initiative, through which energy companies are urging the European Commission to take the right measures to maximise green hydrogen's potential. In Castilla-La Mancha, Iberdrola operates 2,229 MW of renewable energy, mainly wind, which places it as the autonomous community with the second highest ‘green’ megawatts installed by the company. In the region, together with Puertollano II (100 MW), it will develop three other photovoltaic projects, with an installed capacity of 150 MW, in Cuenca and Toledo. In Spain, Iberdrola is the leader in renewable energies, with an installed wind capacity of more than 6,000 MW and over 16,500 MW in renewables as a whole; totalling more than 32,000 MW worldwide and making its generation facilities among the cleanest in the energy sector. Fertiberia, innovative and viable solutions for the ecological transition Fertiberia continues with this project with its purpose of providing innovative and viable solutions for the ecological transition, with the goal of Spain achieving emission neutrality and energy independence. This transition requires the development and incorporation of state-of-the-art technology to efficiently adapt and integrate this new hydrogen stream, as well as advanced process control. By producing ammonia from renewable sources, the company will avoid the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere while reducing dependence on a fossil fuel that must be imported from third countries. Ammonia is, in turn, the raw material for the manufacture of a wide range of products including latest-generation sustainable fertilizers. The oxygen obtained as a co-product of the electrolysis of water will be used entirely in Fertiberia's nitric acid unit, which also reduces its emissions. 23/07/2020The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Fundación Iberdrola España present Tejiendo vidas, contando cuadros, a graphic novel in easy reading by Aitor Saraiba Novela Gráfica is an inclusive cognitive accessibility project in easy reading created by the Education Area of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza with the support of the Fundación Iberdrola España and the collaboration of AMÁS Fácil (easy reading service of the AMÁS Group), which has also had the participation of the Madrid Association of Spina Bifida (AMEB), the Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG), the Fundación Grandes Amigos, the Asociación Para la Integración del Menor Paideia, the Centro Día de Apoyo Social Latina (belonging to the public network of social care for people with mental illness in the Community of Madrid managed by Grupo5 ) and the Centro Ocupacional Municipal de Leganés belonging to Grupo AMÁS. Tejiendo vidas, contando cuadros, by artist and graphic narrator Aitor Saraiba, has been constructed from the selection of works and the life narratives of the participants in this project to whom Saraiba proposed different exercises and interviewed one by one, in order to shape the text and drawings. Subsequently, the group approved the result, which AMÁS easily validated in terms of easy reading. Work has been carried out on networks and the role of the Museum as a scenario for participation and an agent of social transformation has been strengthened; research and development of new narratives around the museum and its collections have been deepened and cognitive accessibility materials which are inviting to the general public have been developed. With the declaration of the State of Alarm due to the health emergency caused by COVID-19, the project continued through a WhatsApp group that allowed the task to be continued, people to keep in touch, to remain in isolation, but not alone and caring for each other. Therefore, Tejiendo vidas, contando cuadros becomes an object of multiple dimensions: it collects the biography of its participants; it is a new and different journey through the Museum's collections, creating new narratives around the chosen works; it is the work of an artist; it is the product of a network between entities, and it is cognitively accessible material which is inviting to any reader or visitor to the museum. It is also an example that the museum can be a stage for respect, participation and tolerance, fulfilling its function as an agent of social cohesion and transformation; a space where anyone, wherever they come from, whatever their age or condition, can see themselves reflected and feel that they belong. The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, with the support of the Fundación Iberdrola España, in line with the United Nations' SDGs, continues to work on improving accessibility to its collection and its contents through the Education and Social Action lines of its Education Area. IBERDROLA, committed to society Since its beginnings, Iberdrola has been committed to the energy, cultural and social development of the communities in which it operates. The Fundación Iberdrola España represents one more step in this commitment; through the development of initiatives to help improve people's quality of life. One of the Foundation's main areas of activity focuses on the care, maintenance and promotion of art and culture. READ MORE

23/07/2020Iberdrola is ramping up investment as part of its drive to support industry and local employment to pursue the green transformation in Asturias Iberdrola is speeding up investments to develop the green economy, converting Asturias into an major hub for industry and jobs, driving new investments in renewable energies and more contracts for the local industrial community related to sunrise sectors. For example, the company has just awarded contracts to six Asturian companies — Windar, Tensa, Isotrón (Isastur Group), Gonvarri Solar Steel, Asturmadi Reneergy and Asturfeito — to work on new renewable energy and power grid projects that the company will build in Spain and its international markets. The contracts were announced by Ángeles Santamaria, CEO of Iberdrola España, and Asís Canales, head of Procurement and Insurance at Iberdrola during a presentation on the subject entitled ‘The Opportunities of the Energy Transition for Asturian Companies and Jobs’, this morning in Avilés. These contracts and the agreement signed a month ago with Windar entail orders for around 200 million euros, and multiply by four the average purchases from Asturian companies placed by the company every year. In the last 18 months, Iberdrola has awarded more contracts to local companies in a trend that has picked up speed and gained weight, now totalling 300 million euros. The work done by these companies, which have been working with Iberdrola for years, will create thousands of jobs in the industry in Asturias. Contribution to developing the industrial sector and local jobs in the sunrise sectors Avila-based Windar will help to build 50 transition piece foundations for the Baltic Eagle wind farm, the company’s second off-shore project in German waters, with an installed power of 476 MW, after the commissioning of the Wikinger plant. The agreement will strengthen a collaboration that began more than six years ago and has entailed contracts worth more than 300 million euros, including work on the now complete Wikinger (Baltic Sea) and East Anglia One (United Kingdom) wind farms. A month ago, through its subsidiary Ailes Marines, Iberdrola awarded the largest contract in the history of the Navantia-Windar joint venture in the offshore wind sector for the construction of the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm , which the energy company is developing in the waters off French Brittany. Tensa, in turn, will manufacture, assemble and lay the 220 kV cable for the second Ceclavin macro-photovoltaic solar project that Iberdrola plans to build in the province of Caceres. The company has carried out several projects for the energy sector in Castilla y León and Extremadura over the last four years. It has also just reached a two-year framework agreement for the deployment and maintenance of smart grids in Spain. Isotrón (Isastur Group), which has worked on the company's renewable energy projects in Spain and Mexico, will also participate in the Ceclavín and four other photovoltaic projects in Spain, building the civil works and assembling the substations. Gonvarri Solar Steel has been hired to manufacture and supply fixed structures and photovoltaic plants that Iberdrola plans to build in Extremadura, Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha. Asturmadi Reneergy, on the other hand, will work on the Barcience photovoltaic solar project, that the energy company will install in the province of Toledo, supplying 5,000 units for fixed BPH-3PV solar structures that will support the almost 150,000 solar panels used in this project. Asturfeito, a company that has already worked on other hydraulic projects with Iberdrola, has been selected to build wind turbine bearings for the Castro I Hydroelectric Power Plant, which is under construction in the waters of the River Duero, in Zamora. New investments in renewables will triple the region's installed capacity Iberdrola's commitment to establishing an energy model for the future in Asturias is complemented by the acceleration of investments in wind projects in the region. The company is preparing to build four wind farms (Cordel-Vidural, Capiechamartín, Verdigueiro and Panondres), with a total of 130 megawatts (MW) of power, tripling the renewable capacity installed in the region to date. Investment in these projects amounts to more than 100 million euros and will create jobs for some 1,200 people, according to PNIEC* estimates. The projects will help to boost local and national industry, since practically all the site and civil works will be carried out by Asturian companies and the wind turbines will be manufactured by Windar (Avilés) and on other Siemens Gamesa sites in Somozas (Galicia), Ágreda (Soria), Reinosa (Cantabria) and Lerma (Burgos). More investment in sunrise technologies and promoting entrepreneurship The transformation of the region will include other projects, including one related to the circular economy, through the recovery of waste by recycling ashes, slag and gypsum for transformation into new materials for the construction sector. The actions will also be completed with more investments in the field of sustainable mobility, with new charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, and the analysis the company carries out on innovation projects related to new technologies, such as storage, green hydrogen production, etc. Iberdrola's green recovery plan for Asturias also includes the launch of a Citizen Innovation Platform to channel entrepreneurial initiatives, encouraging innovation for the energy transition, which will accelerate collaboration processes between citizens, public bodies and companies. The main objective of this initiative is to transform the area into a space for advanced experimentation that will encourage entrepreneurs and startups thinking about setting up in the region, by studying funding options for R&D+i initiatives from local suppliers. Backing clean, sustainable and competitive technology Iberdrola is the leader in renewable energies in Spain, with an installed wind capacity of more than 6,000 MW and over 16,600 MW in renewables as a whole. Worldwide, the total amounts to 32,700 MW, making its generation facilities among the cleanest in the energy sector. Its commitment to a green recovery has led it to commit record investments this year of 10 billion euros in renewable energies, smart electrical networks and large-scale storage systems, after having allocated 25 billion euros since 2001 in Spain - rising to 100 billion euros worldwide - which have enabled the generation of 80,000* jobs in the country. 22/07/2020Iberdrola speeds up investment to €3.58 billion and posts €1.84 billion net profit in the first half, up by 12.2% Iberdrola has accelerated its investments to €3.58 billion in the first half of the year, 2.3% more than in the same period in 2019 and despite the lockdown situation due to the COVID-19. Driven by this investment effort and despite an adverse impact of €153 million from the pandemic, net profit stood at €1.84 billion at the end of June, up by 12.2%. The group's gross operating profit (Ebitda) amounted to €4.91 billion, 1.4% below that of the first six months of the previous year, posting growth in renewables (+5.3%) and generation and supply (+14.3%) but a lower contribution from the networks business (-10.6%). Adjusted Ebitda, after removing the pandemic impacts on this account (€157 million), grew by 4.2% to €5.07 billion. The Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, commenting on the first six months, said that "we are making firm progress in our commitment to invest €10 billion in 2020, demonstrating that the way to a rapid and sustained recovery is the green economy". With regard to the management of the pandemic, Iberdrola has put all its stakeholders at the centre of its strategy. The group's action protocols for COVID-19 have been the first to be certified by AENOR worldwide and the incidence rate of the disease among its employees is much lower than the average for the countries where Iberdrola operates, with the company's professionals in continental Europe already working from offices. In the rest of the countries, progress is being made in accordance with current regulations. As for suppliers, Iberdrola has advanced orders for €7 billion in the first half of the year, helping to sustain a supply chain that generates 400,000 jobs worldwide. Customers have also remained at the centre of the company’s strategy, maintaining security of supply at all times while guaranteeing special measures to help out the most vulnerable customers. Shareholders, for their part, have benefited from a remuneration of €0.40 gross per share against 2019 earnings, once the new edition of the 'Iberdrola Flexible Remuneration' programme was launched, by which they will receive €0.232 gross per share as a supplementary dividend, to be paid on 4 August. This completes the €0.168 gross per share paid last February as an interim dividend. All this while avoiding the dilutive effect through the execution of an own shares buy-back programme, to maintain the share capital in 6,240 million shares. Moving forward with a renewable pipeline of 58,000 MW These results show the resilience of Iberdrola's business model, even after the pandemic had an adverse impact on its net operating profit (EBIT) of €228 million and €153 million on its net profit. Likewise, in the second quarter of the year, net profit fell by 13.6% to €587.9 million, although, overall in the first half of the year, it grew by 12% to €1.84 billion. Meanwhile, demand is beginning to recover in Spain and the UK, while countries such as the US and Brazil are beginning to implement regulatory compensation measures, with which the company expects to recover around €70 million. Regarding its €3.58 billion investments in the period, 90% was allocated to the networks and renewable energy businesses. Taking into account the past twelve months, this amount already stands at €8.23 billion. As a result, Iberdrola installed around 1,600 megawatts (MW) of capacity in the first half of the year and over 4,900 MW the last year. This investment effort is in addition to the 7,500 MW currently under construction. The company also continues to increase its project pipeline with its strategy of growth in renewables, through corporate operations in Australia (bid for Infigen Energy), Sweden (agreement with Svea Vind Offshore for the development of up to 9 gigawatts of offshore wind) and France (acquisition of Aalto Power). This brings Iberdrola's renewable pipeline to 58,000 MW, 60% of which are located in the US and Spain. Particularly noteworthy are the opportunities in offshore wind, with 12,000 MW under development, in addition to the 9,000 MW of options in Sweden. The new projects are supported by the different plans towards a green recovery approved in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil and the European Union. This development is being carried out while improving efficiency, with a 3.3% reduction in net operating expenses up to June, and increasing cash flow generation to €3.92 billion in the first half, a 1.1% growth. Also, in line with its commitment to maintain a strong balance sheet, Iberdrola had liquidity of €14.6 billion at the end of June, sufficient to cover 30 months' financing needs in a normalised context. The company has had its credit ratings reaffirmed by S&P, Moody's and Fitch and has once again shown the confidence that investors have in it, with €2.6 billion issued in the first half of the year on the best conditions and well over €22 billion in green and sustainable financing. Iberdrola thus confirms it global leadership in this field. Guidance for 2020: Iberdrola maintains forecasts The investments planned for the year, up to €10 billion; the new capacity that will be brought into operation over the year, nearly 4,000 MW; the rate cases in Brazil and the United States, and the continuous cost savings and efficiency improvements mean that Iberdrola can reaffirm its guidance for the end of the year, in an environment that is still uncertain as a result of COVID-19. Therefore, the company maintains its net profit growth forecast ranging from 'mid' to 'high single digit', with the dividend increasing along the same line. All of this will depend on external factors such as demand, the evolution of electricity prices, debt maturities and the implementation of measures to offset the effects of the pandemic. READ MORE

20/07/2020Iberdrola is the first company in the world to obtain AENOR certification for its COVID-19 protocol Iberdrola is the first company to obtain global certification from AENOR for its COVID-19 protocol. This certification has been extended to all group companies - Iberdrola España, ScottishPower, Avangrid, Neoenergia, Iberdrola México and Iberdrola Energía Internacional - after the holding company was approved in June this year, becoming the first Ibex 35 multinational to certify its excellent measures against the pandemic. The certification granted by AENOR, dated 15 July, guarantees the system implemented by Iberdrola to deal with the coronavirus, ensuring the health and safety of people and maintaining the quality of the electrical energy supply. This highlights the efficacy of the more than 150 measures implemented by Iberdrola around the world to support all stakeholders during the health emergency: employees, suppliers, shareholders and society at large. To do this, AENOR considers several aspects, such as management of specific risks in the organisation, occupational health management, good cleaning and hygiene measures, organisational measures, protective measures, training, information and communication, crisis management and uninterrupted operations. In terms of the group business, the certificate has also been validated for production, transport, distribution and energy retailing and other activities undertaken by Iberdrola group companies, which currently have more than 35,000 employees in 23 countries. These measures include purchasing and donating essential healthcare products worth around €25 million and reinforcing the grid to secure a reliable power supply for hospital facilities. Iberdrola also went out of its way to keep the supply chain going, which meant bringing forward €4 billion worth of orders from over 10,000 suppliers during the first quarter of the year – twice the amount spent in Q1 2019. Iberdrola, providing jobs and a secure supply During the COVID-19 crisis, Iberdrola proved its commitment to keeping and creating quality jobs, also announcing plans to hire thousands of workers in 2020. The company also succeeded right from the beginning in striking a balance between the need to continue providing society with its essential power supply service and the responsibility to protect the health and safety of each and every employee. Iberdrola sees the well-being of its human capital as a top priority, which is why it was the first multinational to obtain AENOR’s Healthy Company certificate under a year ago, applying to all of the companies in the group that operate in 25 countries.
