30/11/2022"The European Commission has done a great job, but now the Member States must do what they have to do" Mr Galán spoke to CNBC’s flagship European programme, Squawk Box, about the energy crisis, the outlook for energy in Europe and the U.S., as well as priorities for Iberdrola investment over the next three years. Speaking to the anchors of the show, Karen Tso and Geoff Cutmore, they opened by pointing out the record EUR 47 billion investment plan announced by Iberdrola at Capital Markets Day . Mr Galán commented that ongoing volatility in the energy sector has been driven by volatility in the oil and gas sector and the world’s reliance on it for around 75 % of energy needs compared with 25 % on electricity. Having witnessed three different crises in the energy sector across more than 20-years in the sector, the Chairman warned that continuing to rely on fossil fuels would result in the same issues being repeated in the future. To resolve ongoing crisis, more carrots and not sticks are needed to incentivise the growth of clean energy. ‘Sticks’ included the permitting process and regulatory challenges in the EU, as countries are more fragmented on the response to the crisis. Stability would offer the support needed to scale up clean energy solutions to reduce dependence on energy imports, including deploying more renewable energy , strengthening grids , and developing more interconnection between countries. He was positive about the fact that Europe already has established and ambitious frameworks agreed, such as Fit for 55 and RePowerEU. He stressed the need for an energy union in Europe, and less fragmentation when it comes to setting energy policies amongst the member states. Mr Galan noted that the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in U.S. was promoting investment in clean energy and grids and new solutions such as green hydrogen . Discussing Iberdrola investment plans, Mr Galán highlighted that U.S. investment was increasing, and this also included the upcoming acquisition of PNM in New Mexico. He reiterated that ambitious investment is also planned in Europe and the UK, pointing to major investments in offshore wind . READ MORE

28/11/2022We accelerate decarbonisation and build a new 50 MW wind farm in Greece within six months Iberdrola has begun commissioning of Askio III wind farm, located in the town of Galatini, in the region of Western Macedonia, Greece. With an installed capacity of 50 MW, it will be capable of supplying enough clean, affordable and locally produced energy to meet the annual needs of more than 54,000 homes. In just over six months, the company has completed the installation of the 12 wind turbines that make up the wind farm, with 70-metre-long blades and a rotor diameter of 150 metres, as well as all the work necessary to connect them to the grid. In total, around 30 kilometres of cable have been laid, between the three internal medium-voltage circuits and the evacuation line. In addition, the Lygeri substation near the town of Kozani has been extended. Although the plant is located in a mountainous area at an altitude of 1,500 metres above sea level and on rocky terrain, the simultaneous execution of civil works, transport and wind turbine assembly, which began in April, has enabled construction to be completed in such a short period of time. In addition, in order to speed up the commissioning process, all the turbines were tested with the help of generators before being connected to the grid. Thus, Iberdrola has managed to complete the project before the arrival of winter, which would have delayed the evacuation of the facility's renewable production to the Greek electricity system for months, due to the heavy accumulation of snow that is common in these mountains. During its construction, the project has generated an average of 75 jobs, with peaks of up to 150 jobs, mostly local. Technology to care for the environment In order to minimise the environmental impact, Blade Lifter technology has been used. This method is based on a 10-axle trailer that incorporates an articulated platform to rotate and vertically tilt the blades during transport, making it possible to move it along existing roads and tracks. In this way, it reduces the need to build additional access while reducing environmental impact. In addition, the turbines are assembled in two stages, which reduces the surface area of each wind turbine platform. By using its own smaller transport crane to assemble the first section of the tower, the need for space for stockpiling the wind turbines is minimised. This installation will share the grid connection point with the Askio II wind farm, currently under construction, which will reduce its environmental impact and facilitate the commissioning process once the plant is completed. More than 365-MW clean capacity in operation The Iberdrola group now has 365 MW clean capacity installed in Greece. In addition to the 38 MW Askio II wind farm, which has already started to receive blades at the site, the company is developing the 18 MW Rokani project near Athens, which is currently under construction. The Iberdrola group began its commitment to renewable energy more than two decades ago as a fundamental pillar on which to build its clean, reliable and competitive business model. Thanks to this vision, the company is today a leader in renewable energies, with more than 39,000 MW of renewable capacity installed worldwide. The company has established itself as a wind energy global benchmark, with more than 15,000 wind turbines in operation worldwide. Iberdrola has just announced a global investment of €17 billion in renewable energy by 2025, 24% of which will be earmarked for European Union countries, excluding Spain. Of the total, more than €4.2 billion will be allocated to onshore wind projects. The group expects to increase its installed renewable capacity by 12,100 MW in the coming years – 3,100 MW of onshore wind – reaching 52,000 MW in 2025. READ MORE

24/11/2022We seek partnerships to enhance the detection of incidents in our distribution networks Iberdrola is strengthening one of its key business areas: distribution and transmission networks. Through its PERSEO start-up programme, the utility is seeking solutions that enable the early detection of incidents in the installations and equipment of the transformation centres responsible for modifying the voltage so that end users can make use of the energy. The mission is to improve the quality of service by reducing incidents in the supply and in the installations themselves. In its mission to continue advancing in the electrification and decarbonisation of the economies of the countries in which it operates, the electricity company chaired by Ignacio Galán has launched a challenge to improve the operation of its transformation centres. These are key in the process of distributing electricity through the grid, as they are responsible for modifying the voltage so that end users can use the energy in their homes or businesses. Iberdrola has more than 400,000 transformer stations in the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom and Spain, with more than 1.5 million medium to low voltage distribution transformers, built and operated to provide a high quality and reliable service to some 31 million electricity supply points. The challenge is launched within the framework of the new smart grid innovation centre, the Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub, which Iberdrola has made a global benchmark in smart grids. The aim of this hub is to foster open collaboration and coworking between technicians from the Iberdrola group's electricity distribution company, i-DE, suppliers, start-ups and different organisations from around the world. The networks business is crucial for Iberdrola, which announced at its Capital Markets & ESG Day on 9 November that it will allocate 57% of the total 47 billion euros in planned investments between 2023 and 2025 to this area - around €27 billion. The digitalisation of the grid carried out by Iberdrola provides the centres with new equipment to monitor the conditions of the installation and critical equipment, such as medium-voltage switchgear, the low-voltage switchboard and the digital equipment itself. This information enables preventive maintenance to be carried out, anomalies to be detected, dangerous situations to be avoided and possible breakdowns and incidents to be anticipated. Thus, projects should detect any generic alarm signals in transformer substations, from CO2 levels, temperature, humidity or possible flooding. They may also be based on optical and thermographic cameras. In addition to the sensor system, companies wishing to participate must propose data processing and alarm management. The challenge will also value the incorporation of advanced technologies, such as thermal infrared, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, among others. The team of experts from Iberdrola's network business will be responsible for selecting the innovative solution or solutions that enable the early identification of incidents at transformer substations. The engine of start-ups in the energy sector This year, Iberdrola celebrates 15 years of innovation in the energy sector through its start-up programme, PERSEO. This has helped the utility to launch innovative solutions to promote renewable energy, decarbonisation and electrification of the economy, digitalisation of grids, promotion of efficient storage and care for the environment. The initiative, with nine companies currently in its portfolio, has created a global ecosystem of start-ups over the years with an investment of 175 million euros. The programme's ecosystem includes more than 7,500 start-ups, including unicorns - companies valued at more than $1 billion - such as electric vehicle charging solutions manufacturer Wallbox and Stem, which offers smart battery storage solutions. Pilot projects give start-ups access to large volumes of data and real energy assets by testing their technologies in a real environment, while at the same time offering investment to start-ups with the highest growth potential. These two formulas provide insight into the market and first-hand access to key technologies. READ MORE

23/11/2022We became the first company with AENOR’s Sustainable Procurement Strategy certificate Iberdrola is committed to society and, for this reason, has taken a new step forward by obtaining the Sustainable Procurement Strategy certificate awarded by AENOR, based on the ISO 20400:2017 standard, where the company's responsibility to ensure that the life cycle of each product or service has the greatest positive environmental, social and economic impact has been verified. The certificate was presented by Rafael García Meiro, CEO of AENOR, to Asís Canales, Global Procurement and Services Director of the Iberdrola group, at a ceremony held at the energy company's headquarters in Bilbao. Asís Canales, Iberdrola's Global Director of People and Services, stated that "It is the culmination of our strategy of sustainable development of the supply chain. We have been carrying out activities in the area of suppliers for many years, from the point of view of sustainability, and the fact that this new certificate now exists and that we are pioneers in having it, in some way confirms that the path we had taken was the right one". For his part, Rafael García Meiro explains that "at AENOR we have been working on solutions that help companies that aim to make their commitment to sustainability a competitive differentiating factor. We have developed the Sustainable Procurement Strategy certification, because procurement is a powerful instrument for amplifying SDG action in companies, promoting transversal sustainability throughout the value chain. In this line, the audit by AENOR has shown that the sustainable purchasing management system implemented by Iberdrola is in line with current best practices". In fact, AENOR's certification shows that Iberdrola has effectively incorporated a vision of its supply chain focused on sustainability, favoring a 'back and forth' interaction with the company's suppliers and internal stakeholders in a continuous and transparent manner thanks to the digital tools implemented that facilitate the management of purchasing processes, risk management and compliance with the company's governance guidelines. The global scope of this certification, which applies to all of the company's areas of activity anywhere in the world, has meant that by 2021 Iberdrola will have allocated €10.827 billion (82.5 % of the total awarded) to suppliers that exceeded the sustainability levels established by its sustainable procurement management system. Iberdrola also drives sustainability throughout the supply chain, proposing customized improvement plans to those suppliers that are not at the appropriate sustainability levels, for a long-term relationship. In the last 12 months, more than 500 plans have been submitted, and in more than 50% of the cases these suppliers improved to the point of being considered sustainable. The energy company has a supplier evaluation model based on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. Iberdrola thus considers 43 factors to calculate the ESG score of each of its suppliers, including compliance with human rights, management of risks derived from climate change, circular economy strategy or contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Iberdrola group's achievement of this important certification is part of its global commitment to quality, which involves the excellent management of all processes and resources as an essential lever for creating value for people: shareholders, customers, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders of society. Audit The audit conducted by AENOR has assessed the digital tools that guide the purchasing process as the best option for minimising risks for the organization. In addition, the use of BI tools (Power BI, boots, etc.) allows the staff of the purchasing departments to focus on the management of each tender, with an almost live analysis of the data and facilitating decision-making and reporting. In the same way, the organization publishes an annual Sustainability Report where it explains its governance policies with an emphasis on its interactions and impacts with its stakeholders. There is also a Procurement Policy that articulates the company's governance guidelines with respect to spending and the level of legal compliance required of suppliers and internal stakeholders, establishing sustainable supply chain management as a standard. According to the audit, Iberdrola has an internal scorecard that integrates supplier performance in terms of cost, time and supplier risk, and has a robust digital supplier process that affects economic, structural, capacity, responsibility and sustainability aspects. A culture of sustainability and responsible supplier management is promoted within the organization at all levels, including senior management, a Code of Ethics and Conduct for employees and suppliers is public and accessible, and the Terms abd Condicitions of Contract are transparent, public and accessible AENOR's Sustainable Procurement Management certificate, based on the ISO 20400:2017 standard, allows clients to integrate into a certificate an action strategy aligned with Sustainability, to highlight the real execution of ESG commitments to investors or society, to minimize risks throughout the value chain, to involve the entire business structure within the supply chain, and to anticipate the legal provisions that are being developed, such as the Due Diligence Directive, or to respond to the specific requirements that are beginning to be included to qualify for certain subsidies. Iberdrola, commited to the SDGs Iberdrola has fully incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, approved in September 2015, into its strategy. In line with its activity, Iberdrola focuses its efforts on the supply of affordable and non-polluting energy (Goal 7) and on climate action (Goal 13). By obtaining the AENOR Sustainable Procurement certificate, Iberdrola also contributes to the fulfillment of SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), 12 (responsible production and consumption) and 17 (partnerships to achieve the goals). In addition, the group contributes directly to ensuring clean water and sanitation (goal 6), is the leading private utility in the European Union by volume of investment in R&D&I (goal 9), promotes respect for the life of terrestrial ecosystems (goal 15) and contributes indirectly to the rest of the SDGs.
