23/03/2023We lead the Atmosphere consortium to boost green hydrogen production Iberdrola leads the Atmosphere consortium with the participation of Ingeteam, Inerco, ABC Compressors, IDESA and Innomerics, whose main objective will be to research new technologies associated with critical equipment in green hydrogen generation plants, covering the entire value chain, so as to enable a significant reduction in investment costs and the operation and maintenance of these plants. To validate the developments carried out in the project, the Iberdrola plant in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) , one of the world's largest hydrogen production systems using electrolysis (20 MW), will be used. The initiative, which runs from 2022 to 2025, has a total budget of 6.2 million euros earmarked entirely for research, is part of the Missions programme of the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) , an agency of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and has secured funding of €4.1 million. The project represents the public-private commitment to promote a collaborative R&D&I scheme that accelerates the fulfilment of the energy transition objectives. It also highlights the need to promote a safe, efficient and clean energy for the 21st century, such as green hydrogen. The public-private commitment is satisfied with the participation of seven public research organisations (OPIs), including technology centres and universities, such as: TECNALIA, IIT Comillas, the Idonial Foundation, the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), the Andalusian Association for Research and Industrial Cooperation (AICIA), the CEIT Technology Centre Association and IDESA Technology & Research Centre. Throughout this project, research into different technologies and elements associated with green hydrogen will enable progress to be made in the decarbonisation of industry, as established as a priority objective of the Green Hydrogen Roadmap in Spain. On 15 February 2023, the project launch meeting was held at the Iberdrola Training Campus in San Agustin de Guadalix, with the participation of all the partners and IPOs involved in the project, which established the starting point for the development of the project. Pioneers in green hydrogen In its commitment to lead the energy transition, as it did with renewables more than 20 years ago, Iberdrola has become a 'first mover' in this new technological challenge that involves the production and supply of green hydrogen , and is leading its development with more than 60 projects in eight countries and alliances with more than 150 SMEs and large companies. The company's objective is to reach 350,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen production per year by 2030. To this end, it has a portfolio of more than 2,000 MW in different regions, mainly in Spain, the United States and Australia. Iberdrola currently has two of the three green hydrogen factories in Spain. One in Barcelona and the other in Puertollano. Both have just been recognised with the 'AENOR Renewable Hydrogen Verification ' seal. Iberdrola has thus become the first company to obtain this qualification from the certification body. The Barcelona plant is the first hydrogen plant for public and commercial use to supply green hydrogen in Spain. It occupies 5,000 m2 in the Zona Franca industrial estate in the city of Barcelona, near the port and airport, and is the first stone in an ecosystem of companies and infrastructures dedicated to green H2 to decarbonise heavy transport and industrial activities. It is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With 20 MW built, the Puertollano plant is the largest H2 plant in Europe. Connected directly to a 100 MW PV plant nearby and to the grid, it has the capacity to produce up to 3,000 t/year. Iberdrola's objective is to develop the value chain of one hundred percent green hydrogen, i.e., without any CO2 emissions, and to concentrate in the industrial centre of Huelva, specifically in the town of Palos de la Frontera, the largest centre in Spain for the production, transformation and consumption of green hydrogen, with the clear objective of decarbonising industry and heavy transport. The use of green hydrogen should focus on applications where there are no other alternatives. In other words, to replace grey hydrogen (produced from fossil fuels) with green hydrogen (produced from renewables) in sectors where it is currently used, such as fertilisers, methanol or refineries. In short, for industrial uses and to reach those sectors where electrification is not sufficient. Subsidized by CDTI READ MORE

22/03/2023Galán assures Lula da Silva that Iberdrola will be Brazil's faithful ally in its energy transition The Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, today assured the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, that Iberdrola will be a loyal ally in the country's energy transition. This was expressed during their visit to the company's first hybrid complex in Brazil. Located in the interior of Paraíba, in the northeast of the country, the Neoenergia Renewable Energy Complex integrates wind and solar power generation for the first time in this country, thanks to the Chafariz wind farm and the Luzia photovoltaic plant. The complex has involved an investment of €630 million and will supply clean energy to 1.3 million homes. The Neonergía Renewable Complex has a capacity of 600 MW, which will prevent the emission of more than 100,000 tons of CO2 per year. The complex consists of 15 wind farms with a total of 136 wind turbines - with an installed capacity of 471.2 MW - and two solar plants of Neoenergia Luzia , with 228,000 panels and an installed capacity of 149.2 MWp. Connection to the grid is guaranteed by the substation and the transmission line, with a length of 345 kilometers. A pioneer in the country, the project stands out for the synergy between wind and solar farms, thus reinforcing Iberdrola's commitment to the development of the Brazilian energy sector in an innovative, efficient and sustainable manner. Hybridization allows for more efficient management of the two renewable sources, cost reduction and better use of the full potential, including the transmission system. "Making projects like this a reality requires political leadership capable of establishing long-term planning, a clear energy policy and stable and encouraging regulation," said Ignacio Galán, chairman of Iberdrola. "We started in Brazil 20 years ago and today we are more than one hundred companies operating in all segments of the Brazilian electricity sector and serve almost 40 million people with a total of 16,000 employees. Iberdrola and Neoenergia will continue to be loyal allies of Brazil", said Galán. For this reason, the electricity company's chairman has pledged to invest 30 billion reais - some €5.3 billion- over the next three years in the country, to continue developing new renewable and grid projects, as well as to make the most of the opportunities offered by technologies such as offshore wind power and green hydrogen. A project with great social impact in Brazil The Neoenergia Renewable Complex has also generated socio-economic benefits for the region: more than 680 hours of training classes were provided, in which around 180 people were trained as bricklayers, carpenters and blacksmiths. A further 150 people were also trained to assemble metal structures for solar panels. These initiatives expand opportunities for residents to enter the labor market. Of the more than 3,600 direct and indirect jobs created, 40 per cent have been filled by local workers. The Complex covers an area of 8,700 hectares, of which only 14 % is occupied, in the municipalities of Santa Luiza, Areia de Baraúnas, São Jose de Sabugi and São Mamede, in the state of Paraíba. Neoenergía, Iberdrola's subsidiary in Brazil The Spanish group's subsidiary has been operating in Brazil since 1997 and is currently one of the leaders in the country's electricity sector. Its businesses are divided into the areas of generation, transmission, distribution and commercialisation. Its distributors serve more than 16 million customers, equivalent to a population of more than 37 million people. Neoenergia has 5.1 GW of installed generation capacity, 90 % of which is renewable, and is implementing a further 200 MW with the construction of new wind farms. In the network business, it has 2,500 km of lines in operation and 6,100 km under construction. Through the Neoenergia Institute, it promotes sustainable development based on socio-environmental actions and thus contributes to improving the quality of life of the communities where the company operates, especially of the most vulnerable people, always aiming at sustainable development. 22/03/2023We are the first company with the AENOR renewable hydrogen certificate Iberdrola's commitment to sustainability has taken a new step forward by becoming the first company to obtain AENOR's Renewable Hydrogen certificate for its Puertollano plant and Barcelona hydrogen plants. This recognition verifies that Iberdrola produces hydrogen from renewable energy sources that are environmentally friendly and climate neutral. Specifically, the AENOR 'Verification of renewable hydrogen' seal covers the hydrogen generation, storage and marketing process, as well as the organisation's management system. This recognition accredits that Iberdrola complies with the European regulation, using water electrolysis technology and that the electricity used for the same comes exclusively from renewable energies. The certificate was collected by Ibán Molina, Iberdrola's Director of Green Hydrogen Spain, and presented by Antonio Contreras, Director of AENOR in Castilla-La Mancha, at a ceremony held at Iberdrola's green hydrogen plant in Puertollano. Ibán Molina stated that "we are proud of this certification. It is a clear demonstration of Iberdrola's role in the generation of renewable hydrogen to decarbonise the economy. In this sense, hydrogen is a success story in Puertollano and Barcelona, where it is helping to decarbonize processes where electrification does not reach, which serves to continue fighting for a sustainable horizon". Antonio Contreras explained that "AENOR is committed to the fight against climate change, and we do so by providing a wide range of certifications related to environmental preservation, carbon management and climate change mitigation actions. Congratulations to Iberdrola, as it is the first company to achieve AENOR recognition for renewable hydrogen, a key energy vector for moving towards a carbon footprint-free economy model." The Verification of Generation, Storage, Commercialization and/or consumption of Renewable Hydrogen has been carried out on the basis of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 December 2018 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, and Order TED/1026/2022, of October 28, approving the procedure for the management of the system of guarantees of origin of gas from renewable sources, the Hydrogen Roadmap (approved by the Council of Ministers on October 9, 2020) and prEN 16325: 2022: Guarantees of origin related to energy, among other regulations applied. The audit performed by AENOR has verified the type of gas produced, the raw materials used and the renewable gas production technology used in Iberdrola's facility, verifying that they meet the established sustainability requirements. Hydrogen, the most abundant chemical element in the universe, is focusing the interest of the sector due to its potential to become a solution that, associated with renewable energy sources, allows decarbonisation of important industrial and mobility towards a carbon-free ecnomic model Certifications in two unique projects Iberdrola's green hydrogen plant in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) comprises a 100-MW solar photovoltaic plant, a lithium-ion battery system with a storage capacity of 20 MWh and one of the world's largest hydrogen production systems using electrolysis (20 MW). All from 100% renewable sources. With an investment of €150 million , the operation of this plant will avoid emissions equivalent to 48,000 tCO2/year. The renewable hydrogen produced there will be used in the ammonia factory that Fertiberia has in the locality to produce green fertilizers. In Barcelona, Iberdrola also has the first commercial renewable hydrogen production and filling facility in Spain, which is used both by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) buses and other fleets and industries in the Zona Franca industrial estate, where it is located. 15/03/2023Iberdrola and Haizea Wind Group sign €200 million framework agreement for East Anglia Three Scottish Power , an Iberdrola group company, and Haizea Wind Group, a world leader in the manufacture of wind towers, have today signed a framework agreement worth over €200 million for Haizea Bilbao to supply 50 monopiles to the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom from its facilities in the Port of Bilbao. Also today, the Basque First Minister Iñigo Urkullu, the Chairman of Haizea Wind Group Dámaso Quintana, and the Chairman of Iberdrola Ignacio Sánchez Galán, together with other authorities, have laid the first stone of the new manufacturing facilities, which will require an investment of more than €150 million. At present, the Group's manufacturing plant in the Port of Bilbao, Haizea Bilbao, has 48,800 square metres and 500 workers. After signing this latest contract with Iberdrola, Haizea Bilbao’s plant will now be enlarged to over 200,000 m2. This expansion has meant broadening the scope of the existing concession granted by the Port Authority. In addition to the three existing warehouses , Haizea Bilbao will build another three, and a new additional storage area to accommodate the monopiles before they are delivered to the transport vessels. In addition, the agreement will result in the creation of some 350 direct new jobs at Haizea Bilbao. With this agreement, Haizea Wind Group secures a workload in Bilbao in excess of €1.5 billion for the next 4 years which represents an important recognition of its technological and manufacturing capabilities. The 50 monopiles that Haizea Wind Group will fabricate for Iberdrola will be used to support the wind turbines of the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom. In total, this wind farm will have a capacity of 1.4 GW and will supply clean energy to more than one million British homes. As per the agreement signed with Iberdrola, Haizea Bilbao will be responsible for the supply of materials, the engineering of the manufacturing process and monopile production. This contract and the expansion of Haizea's capacity in the Port of Bilbao are in line with Haizea Wind Group's strategic growth plan with the aim of becoming a key player in the offshore wind energy value chain and, specifically, securing a relevant position within the offshore foundation supply and manufacturing industry. The agreement with Iberdrola, one of the market leaders in operational offshore wind power, confirms the soundness of the plan developed by Haizea Bilbao over the past few years to position itself as one of the main manufacturers of offshore wind structures (towers and foundations) while consolidating the group's commitment to becoming one of the main global suppliers to the wind industry. The Port of Bilbao will also strengthen its position as one of the most important offshore wind hubs in Southern Europe. The Haizea Bilbao expansion works will be carried out by the Basque company Amenabar. Iberdrola, world leader in offshore wind energy Iberdrola is one of the world's leading offshore wind energy operators and one of the most important players to deliver global energy transition policies. At its Capital Markets Day in November 2022, the Iberdrola group presented its strategic plan and announced record investments of €47 billion between 2023 and 2025. The company intends to allocate around €17 billion to the renewables business, focusing growth on assured, high-quality projects with the best risk/return ratio. Of this amount, 46% will be focused on offshore wind in France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. As for the remaining technologies, onshore wind will account for 25% of the investment, photovoltaic for 24%, hydroelectric for 2% and batteries for 3%. As a result of these investments, the company will increase its installed renewable capacity by 12,100 MW to 52,000 MW in 2025 - 3,100 MW onshore wind, 6,300 MW photovoltaic, 1,800 MW offshore, 700 MW of batteries and 200 MW of hydro - compared to the 40,000 MW planned for this year. The group has already secured 50% of the new capacity and around 95% of production will be contracted by 2025. About Haizea Wind Group Haizea Wind Group was formed in 2017, building on two existing companies (WEC Group and Tecnoaranda). In 2018 Haizea launched Haizea Sica, its wind tower factory in Santa Fe (Argentina). Also in 2018, production was launched in the offshore tower factory in the Port of Bilbao, Haizea Bilbao, by a group of professionals with extensive experience and with the aim of becoming the benchmark in offshore wind manufacturing in the European market. More recently, in 2022, Haizea Wind Group opened the Haizea Breizh plant in France, also dedicated to offshore wind towers. Haizea Wind Group currently has three business units: wind towers, offshore foundations and large wind power castings. This is the second contract Haizea Bilbao has secured for the future Port facilities after the one signed last September with the Danish company Ørsted. The Group currently employs around 1,200 people and had turnover in 2022 in excess of €250 million. Monopiles are large steel structures used to fix wind turbines to the seabed, and are the most competitive type of foundation, being present in approximately 80% of the offshore wind farms in operation. Currently, for 10-12 MW offshore wind turbines, monopiles have a diameter of 8-9 metres, a length of 80-90 metres and a weight of around 1,500 tonnes . Haizea Bilbao is one of the few European manufacturers capable of producing parts with these dimensions. In the future, with wind turbines of up to 20 MW, it is estimated that the monopiles will be up to 14-15 metres in diameter, up to 130 metres long and weigh up to 3,500 tonnes. With scheduled investments, the new plant in Bilbao will be able to manufacture parts of this size in serial production and will become the benchmark factory in Europe. Haizea Wind Group is currently the leading manufacturer of large offshore wind towers in Europe having executed important projects such as East Anglia One and Dogger Bank (UK), Borselle 1&2 and HKZ (Holland), Hornsea Two (UK), Seamade (Belgium), Formosa (Taiwan), St. Nazaire and St. Brieuc (France) or Hywind Tampen (Norway) among others.
