06/06/2024 - 13:02 UTC +02:00Iberdrola invests 290 million this year to boost digitisation in all its activities Iberdrola today held the tenth edition of its Digital Summit at the company's campus in San Agustín del Guadalix (Madrid). The company will invest 290 million euros this year in digitalisation initiatives aligned with its strategic plan: accelerating renewable energy projects and the development of smart grids, improving operational excellence and customer experience, always with the highest standards of cybersecurity. During the inauguration, Ignacio Galán, Executive Chairman of the company, said: "In the same way that we were pioneers decades ago in the commitment to renewable energies, we have also been pioneers in the digitalisation of electricity grids and now we are pioneers in the use of artificial intelligence and big data. And now that we are immersed in an unstoppable process of electrification around the world, we must invest even more in digital infrastructure and support innovation and the adoption of these new technologies to cover more and more energy uses of millions of consumers, always with the highest standards of cybersecurity". The event, held under the theme Leading in digital and attended by more than 2,000 Group employees, addressed the latest trends in digitalisation and their close interrelation with the process of electrification of the energy matrix through renewable energies, smart grids and energy storage. Cybersecurity and AI, the star topics During the conference, the main topics addressed were cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence and the journey to the Cloud, also highlighting the human side of digitisation. The company has counted on the participation of a large group of experts from leading international companies. Professionals from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, BBVA, Ferrovial, Meliá Hotels, the social innovation agency Innuba and the consultancy firm Ideami, as well as Carme Artigas, co-chair of the United Nations Advisory Council for Artificial Intelligence, attended the event. Suzana Curic, country lead for AWS in Iberia, highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence and generative AI in companies. ‘Right now 36% of companies in Spain are already using this type of technology, and if an adoption rate of 30% per year is maintained - as it was last year - it could unlock an additional injection of more than 55 billion euros into the Spanish economy by 2030,’ she said. Curic added that, ‘for this to happen, three critical issues need to be addressed: fostering innovation through public-private collaboration; working with regulators to establish a regulatory framework that helps us to make ethical use of this technology; democratising access to AI for all types of organisations and individuals; and helping to reduce the digital divide in digital skills’. Microsoft explained how they are driving economic growth and innovation with their investments in infrastructure and data centres. "Our vision is to empower digital transformation and sustainability, creating opportunities and jobs in the country. Innovation in generative AI is another pillar of our commitment, integrating it into all our products to offer secure and reliable solutions,’ said Carolina Castillo, director of Marketing and Operations at Microsoft Spain. 05/06/2024 - 09:45 UTC +02:00Iberdrola recognised by the United Nations Global Compact for its steadfast commitment to sustainability Iberdrola has been recognised by the United Nations Global Compact for its commitment to sustainability through the 'Forward Faster' initiative. The company received this award during the event held to mark the organisation’s 20th anniversary. The measures being taken by the company in key areas such as climate action, protection of human rights and green finance have the power to push forward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These actions have been decisive for the Global Compact to value Iberdrola's high level of commitment and leadership in sustainability. The 'Forward Faster' initiative aims to increase accountability and transparency by calling on companies to make their commitments public and highlight the actions they will take to meet the targets. Measures adopted Iberdrola reports annually on its progress in sustainability to the United Nations Global Compact. * ‘Forward Faster’ recognises that gender equality is essential for sustainable progress. The utility company is committed to working towards equal representation, participation and leadership at all levels of management and equal pay for equal work by 2030. * Climate change and global warming are among today's most pressing challenges. ‘Forward Faster’ has called on companies to take action by including science-based net emissions reduction targets in line with the 1.5°C limit and to contribute to a just transition that addresses the social impacts of climate change. * Another objective is the eradication of the working poor. Iberdrola ensures that 100% of its workers earn a living wage, in line with the goal of the Living Wage Initiative 2030. It is also working to establish joint action plans with contractors and supply chain partners to achieve this goal. * Another of the global challenges driving ‘Forward Faster’ is water scarcity. Iberdrola has developed water resilience in its operations and supply chains. It has also shown its commitment to collaborate to achieve a positive water impact in at least 100 priority vulnerable watersheds by 2030. * This Iberdrola programme also states that adequate financing is essential for the achievement of the goals of the 2030 Agenda. It urges organisations to align their corporate financing strategies linked to the SDGs. It should be noted that Iberdrola, a world leader in green bond issuance, signed a first sustainable credit linked to the United Nations 2030 Agenda in 2019. This was the first transaction linked to SDG 7: affordable and clean energy. The data confirms the company's leadership in ESG project finance, with almost €54.5 billion trading volume by the end of 2023. The investment plan has a very high degree of alignment (approximately 90%) with the European Union Taxonomy, one of the fundamental bases of the EU's sustainable finance framework. Iberdrola and the Global Compact Iberdrola has been a member of the Global Compact since 2002, undertaking commitments to support, promote and disseminate its ten principles related to human rights, labour practices, the environment and the fight against corruption, both in its field and in its sphere of influence, and to contribute to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
