09/10/2024Iberdrola invests in innovation, sustainability and smart grids at Startup Olé Salamanca Iberdrola has reaffirmed its commitment to innovation , sustainability, digital transformation and knowledge in smart grids at the Startup Olé Salamanca, a major global event for tech entrepreneurship. The head of Iberdrola's Grid business in Salamanca, Ávila and Zamora, Elsa García, and the head of Perseo – Iberdrola's Open Innovation and Investment Programme with Startups –, Óscar Cantalejo, presented this morning in the space set up by the company at Startup Olé, one of the most important international events in the entrepreneurial ecosystem being held this week in the city of Salamanca, the main innovations Iberdrola is working on and investing in. Cantalejo stressed the company's commitment to entrepreneurs: "We’ve investing and working with start-ups since 2008 to promote a more sustainable and forward-looking industry around the energy transition, creating high quality jobs and making progress. This collaboration with start-ups is key to continue pushing the decarbonisation and electrification of the economy forward and also allows us to support Iberdrola's growth with agile and dynamic technology partners". Elsa Garcia emphasised that "Iberdrola wants to remain at the forefront of the energy transition by developing new business and technological models in distribution grids. The electricity system is going through an unprecedented transformation and the grids are the cornerstone of the energy revolution, an essential platform for moving towards a decarbonised economy, which favours the development of an electricity system with more renewable sources, sustainable mobility, smart cities and self-consumption". At the company's innovation space at Startup Olé, Garcia showed a 3D model of an electrical substation and represented in extended virtual reality (Digital Twin), different use cases with drones with impressive inspection videos and a pilot initiative with cutting-edge technology to insulate power lines and protect birdlife. "Pioneering technology projects, almost unnoticeable to the human eye, but which can be an effective and highly advanced solution to protect the environment," he says. World Centre for Smart Grid Innovation Iberdrola's Grids Business, through the Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub , has created an ecosystem to promote innovation, developing talent through collaboration with universities, offering opportunities to students and preparing future professionals. More than 15 years innovating Iberdrola has been innovating in the energy sector for more than 15 years through its start-up programme, PERSEO, which has invested more than €200 M in start-ups that develop innovative technologies and business models, focusing on those that improve the sustainability of the energy industry through greater electrification and decarbonisation of the economy. The programme's ecosystem includes more than 7,500 start-ups, including unicorns - companies valued at more than $1 B. University-Business Technology Transfer Iberdrola, which this year is once again one of the main promoters of Startup Olé through its Energy Transition vertical, has shown in Salamanca its commitment to entrepreneurship and innovation and reaffirms its investment in digital transformation and sustainability and its collaboration with the University of Salamanca, where it actively promotes the University-Business technology transfer, in a close alliance for the launch of R&D&I projects and training initiatives in areas of common interest. 07/10/2024 - 14:44 UTC +02:00Iberdrola's robot dog "Sparky" recognised for improving grid quality with innovative robotics Iberdrola, through its US subsidiary Avangrid , has received the prestigious Association of Edison Illuminating Companies (AEIC) 2024 award for its contribution to operational excellence in the electric utility industry. Avangrid was recognised for its collaboration with Boston Dynamics and Levatas in the creation of a pilot to progress in substation inspections using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve customer service quality. This collaboration led to the development and implementation of a mobile robot called "Sparky", inspired by a dog, to detect and analyse substation equipment, ensuring safety and reliability for customers. Hurricane John made landfall on 23 September as a category 3 cyclone, causing loss of life, severe flooding and landslides in the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Michoacán. For several years, Iberdrola Mexico has collaborated with the Sedena when the DN-III-E Plan is activated to assist people in cases of disasters through its Energy for Mexico programme. 04/10/2024Iberdrola selected for 385 million euro Federal Capacity Contract in Maine Iberdrola, through its US subsidiary Avangrid, has been selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as a candidate to negotiate a $425 million (around €385 million) grid access capacity contract for its Aroostook transmission project in Maine. The decision is part of the state agency's Transmission Facilitation Program (TFP). The Aroostook project involves the construction of a new substation in Haynesville, Maine and a 345 kV, 111-mile (about 178 km), 1,200 MW capacity alternating current transmission line connecting to the New England grid. It will also include a new 38.5-mile (almost 62 km) 345 kV overhead line. This infrastructure would provide the New England region with access to low-cost, high-quality renewable energy generated in northern Maine, but would also create jobs, develop the local economy and many other community benefits. This Category 4 hurricane entered the southeast coast of Florida last Thursday night with winds of 225 kilometres per hour, and made its way north, with torrential rains and winds that have caused devastating scenes that rescue and recovery teams are still working on today. With these awards, the company recognises the dedication and community-focus of its most active volunteers, whose actions are channelled through its International Corporate Volunteering Programme . Employees of ScottishPower, Avangrid (the company's North American subsidiary), Neoenergia (the group's Brazilian subsidiary) and Iberdrola España Pola Michalska, John Schenck, Layla Rebeca Gomes Costa and David Aldazábal received awards for their dedication and community-focus at an event hosted by BBC presenter Sally Magnusson, Sally Magnusson, and which was attended by berdrola's Executive Chairman , Ignacio Galán, the Mayor of Glasgow, Jacqueline McLaren, and representatives of the charities with which the group works. Pola Michalska received the Occupational Health and Safety Award for her dedication to the fight against cancer, a cause very close and relevant to her due to personal experiences. In this regard, he has been involved in the development of educational books and training courses for schoolchildren on the efficient and safe use of electricity. Last but not least, David Aldazábal's contribution to a project to recover the forest mass of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve was rewarded with the Environment Award. Thanks to the work of many volunteers like David, some 10,000 trees of 25 different native species have been replanted in the aforementioned natural area. In addition to his involvement in this initiative, the distinguishing factor of this Iberdrola España employee has been his ability to involve numerous friends, family members and work colleagues in this and other reforestation, clean-up and biodiversity conservation actions. Iberdrola's volunteering, a global benchmark for social action This is the second edition of these awards, after the one held last year in Madrid, and is part of the International Volunteer Week organised by Iberdrola every year and simultaneously in the main countries where it operates. This year, it will be held from 28 September to 6 October under the slogan ‘I believe in create a better world’. During the event, the company organises multiple activities related to the environment and work in the community . Iberdrola‘ s International Corporate Volunteering Programme is a global initiative that is in line with the group's values and its general sustainable development policy. It was established in 2006 as part of its commitment to encourage its teams to get involved in the worlds of the most disadvantaged people in our society, turning them into agents of change. Its actions already benefit 13 million people in 24 countries. It has been recognised as a pioneering practice by the United Nations in its report ‘Transforming Lives and Communities’, published in September 2021.
