28/05/2024Iberdrola commissions Saint-Brieuc - the second offshore wind farm in France and the first in Brittany Iberdrola has announced that Saint-Brieuc has become the second fully operational offshore wind farm in France and the first in Brittany. As of 28th May 2024, all wind turbines are operational in the project, which has a total capacity of 496 MW (megawatts). The entire production from the 62 turbines is now feeding into the national electricity grid, managed by RTE. To date, the 8 MW turbines are the most powerful to be installed on an offshore wind farm in France. Located off the coast of Brittany, the park's production is around 1,820 GWh/year (gigawatt hours per year), which represents 9% of Brittany's total electricity consumption. With this new commissioning, Iberdrola consolidates its position as a leader in the development and operation of offshore wind globally. Saint-Brieuc is the 4th offshore wind farm developed, built and operated by Iberdrola in the world, after West of Duddon Sands (Irish Sea, 389 MW), Wikinger (Baltic Sea, 350 MW) and East Anglia One (North Sea, 714 MW). Iberdrola has also started the construction of Baltic Eagle (476 MW) in Germany, East Anglia 3 (1.4 GW) in the United Kingdom and Vineyard Wind 1 (806 MW), the first offshore wind farm in the United States. "We are particularly proud today to announce the full commissioning of the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm, twelve years after being named the winner and three years after the start of installation work. I would like to thank all the stakeholders in the region who have supported us over the years, as well as the teams at Iberdrola and our suppliers, who have been involved since 2012 in the realization of this major industrial project, which is supporting the energy transition and employment in France," says Emmanuel Rollin, Director France of Iberdrola. "The challenge for us, as a European leader in renewables, was to create the foundations of a sustainable industrial sector for French offshore wind power. We have worked hard to involve local companies in this project by supporting them in training to develop their skills and expertise in this fast-growing segment ," comments Stéphane-Alain Riou, Director of Offshore Wind Energy at Iberdrola France. A contribution to the French offshore wind energy sector The total investment in the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm, which started development in April 2012, amounts to €2.4 billion, 100% financed by Iberdrola. The development and construction of the wind farm has mobilized more than 1700 jobs in France, including more than 500 jobs in Brittany. Since 2012, through its subsidiary Ailes Marines, Iberdrola has helped to make the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm a driver of local economic development, offering many opportunities for regional companies to join forces and further develop their activity. The components of the jacket foundation were partly built and assembled on the Brest polder by the Navantia Windar. The electrical equipment for the masts of the 62 wind turbines was assembled by the company Haizea Breizh, also on the Brest polder. The wind turbines for the Saint-Brieuc wind farm were manufactured in France, on the new industrial site of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, located in the port of Le Havre. READ MORE

24/05/2024Iberdrola seeks startups to inspect and digitise its wind farms Iberdrola's commitment to offshore wind farms is absolute. Europe's largest electricity company by stock market value, with around 80 billion euros, will invest around 15.5 billion euros in renewables between 2024 and 2026, 54% of which will go to offshore wind in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Through the PERSEO startup programme , the company is looking for solutions to improve its offshore wind installations with fully autonomous or remote-controlled equipment. The mission is to improve the technology of these types of wind farms, as offshore environments are often harsh and experience extreme weather conditions. The equipment must be able to withstand these conditions to optimise maintenance inspections and reduce time and risk for employees. The safety of the workforce is one of the pillars of the utility. The PERSEO initiative is looking for a company to offer autonomous or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), subsea component inspection systems for turbines and substations (jackets, foundations, subsea cables...), image or video capture and condition scanning with subsequent data analysis - complete inspection packages including 3D modelling solutions or digital twins - and on-site preventive maintenance and repair capabilities when possible or necessary. Interested companies should send their proposals to Iberdrola, and, following a selection process, the chosen company will conduct tests with PERSEO or another Iberdrola company that will cover the cost of these activities and provide the winner with all the technical assistance needed. This includes testing in a real data environment to evaluate the solution, access to tools, equipment, infrastructure, high-tech sites and shared work areas. The project will be developed in collaboration with specialised technicians from Iberdrola's renewables and offshore business areas. In addition, if the trial or test is successful, Iberdrola may offer the winner the opportunity to scale the solution through commercial agreements. Furthermore, PERSEO may consider investing in the participating company or in the winning solution of the challenge. At the end of last year, Iberdrola had installed capacity of around 1,800 MW in offshore wind and some 3,000 MW already under construction, with the aim of reaching 4,800 MW of capacity in this technology by 2026. Its operational wind farms are in the United Kingdom (West of Duddon Sands and East Anglia One), Germany (Wikinger) and France (Saint Brieuc), while the German Baltic Eagle and the US Vineyard Wind, as well as the German Widanker and the British East Anglia Three, are scheduled to start up this year. The driving force behind start-ups in the energy sector Since its creation in 2008, PERSEO has invested more than 175 million euros in startups that develop innovative technologies and business models, focusing on those that improve the sustainability of the energy sector through greater electrification and decarbonisation of the economy. The programme has focused its actions on the analysis of business opportunities and technological collaboration with startups and emerging companies around the world. Through PERSEO, Iberdrola launched the Venture Builder programme in 2020 with 40 million euros for the creation of new business models aimed at supporting electrification in sectors that are difficult to decarbonise and the development of circular economy solutions, among others. 23/05/2024"Strengthening the single market and the Energy Union makes Europe stronger, greener, and more competitive" The topics of energy security and tackling climate change are at the forefront of the current European debates. The European Green Deal, the Fit for 55 and Repower EU packages and the European Electricity Market Reform are the right policy frameworks to increase Europe’s self-sufficiency and promote decarbonization. But we need to accelerate implementation: the solution is a more united Europe. The report last month from Enrico Letta is a great step in the right direction: it highlights the benefits that could be delivered by overcoming barriers to further strengthening the Single Market, in particular the Energy Union. Deeper integration, more electrification with clean energies, stronger interconnection infrastructures and power grids and unifying energy taxation will bring competitive, secure, and sustainable energy to European citizens and allow them to benefit from new economic, industrial, and employment opportunities. A stronger Europe, with fewer barriers, means a greener and more competitive Europe. Ignacio Galan, Executive Chairman of Iberdrola READ MORE
