19/09/2024 - 12:34 UTC +02:00Iberdrola strengthens its leadership in offshore wind with the inauguration of €2.4 billion Saint-Brieuc project in France This morning (Thursday 19th September) in Brittany, Iberdrola inaugurated the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm in France, the second largest in the country, with 496-megawatt (MW) of capacity and an annual production of nearly 2,000 gigawatt hours (GWh). This will make it possible to provide secure, indigenous, and emission-free energy to close to 1 million people. With an investment of €2.4 billion, the project began development in 2012 and entered full operation in 2024, following three years of construction. It consists of 62 turbines, each with a capacity of 8 MW, the most powerful installed in France to date. The construction work supported more than 1,700 jobs, 500 locally, and involved a range of industry leading companies, such as Siemens-Gamesa (wind turbines), the Navantia Windar consortium (foundations and transition pieces), Haizea (towers), Prysmian (cabling) and Van Oord (installation). In total, more than 150 European companies worked on the project. The executive chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, said: "This project lays the foundations for the offshore wind sector in France and clearly demonstrates the potential that this technology has to boost energy security and the reindustrialisation of Europe, while contributing to climate objectives, in line with the Draghi report.” The Saint-Brieuc project also helped to advance the offshore wind sector in France. The wind turbines were manufactured by Siemens-Gamesa at a new facility in Le Havre and the components of the jacket foundations were partly built and assembled by Navantia Windar in the Port of Brest. Iberdrola’s experienced project team and suppliers successfully overcame a range of challenges to deliver the project on schedule, including adverse weather and challenging sea conditions. Innovative new techniques and equipment for fixing the turbine’s foundations to the seabed were developed, overcoming the challenges posed by hard rock formations in the seabed (composed of basalt rock). Years of planning was involved in ensuring hundreds of companies across the supply chain delivered components and equipment to specification and on schedule, all supported by expert teams leading on thousands of environmental protection measures and delivering against a wide range of social requirements. Leading offshore wind in the world Saint-Brieuc is Iberdrola's fourth offshore wind farm in full operation, following West of Duddon Sands (United Kingdom), located in the Irish Sea, Wikinger (Germany), in the Baltic Sea, and East Anglia One (United Kingdom), located in the North Sea. In addition, Iberdrola has four other projects in construction. In 2025, Baltic Eagle in Germany and Vineyard Wind 1 (which will be the first large-scale in the United States) will come into operation. In 2026, East Anglia Three in the United Kingdom and Windanker in Germany will come into operation. Iberdrola’s investment in operational offshore wind farms, and those under construction, amounts to €15 billion. Beyond these projects, in the last month, Iberdrola has been awarded contracts for two new projects. East Anglia Two, in the UK and New England Wind 1, in the state of Massachusetts (US). Once concluded, the group’s total investment in offshore wind will exceed €25 billion. Iberdrola also has guaranteed seabed rights for future projects in the UK, continental Europe, the US, Australia, and Japan. Iberdrola in France Besides to the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm, Iberdrola operates 11 onshore wind projects in France and has a portfolio of wind and solar PV projects of in different stages of development. The company has offices in Paris, Lyon, Nantes, Nancy, Bordeaux, Limoges and Marseille, in addition to its operations and maintenance facilities for its assets in the country, such as Saint-Brieuc. Paradela pointed out that we are "facing a major challenge that is bringing a change of mentality in industry and a greater adaptation of the business culture towards sustainability’. In this challenge, ‘industry and technological development have to work together to implement the technological solutions required to address all the energy needs" of industrial processes, he added. Iberdrola's Director of Climate Change and Alliances, Gonzalo Sáenz de Miera, pointed out that "clean industry is the future as long as it is competitive’ and added that ‘Andalusia and Spain have enormous opportunities to take advantage of them because they have economic energy, a good industrial base and a proactive Administration". He also stressed that, ‘in a context of global competition to take advantage of industrial opportunities, Andalusia is a clear leader in the green economy, but, in order to really make the most of this transition, we must continue to commit to ambitious policies, working in alliances, such as this Alliance Q-Zero, which will provide employment and industrial opportunities for Spain and, in particular, for Andalusia’. The Q-Zero Alliance(https://alianzaqcero.es ) is an initiative launched this year by Iberdrola and 70 other Spanish industries to accelerate the decarbonisation of thermal demand in industry and buildings and to promote the coming together of renewable electricity generation and the needs of thermal energy consumers. This was stated by its Executive Chairman, Ignacio Galán, during a meeting today with Olympic and Paralympic athletes María Pérez, Teresa Perales, Susana Rodríguez, Sara Sorribes, Elena Congost and Laura Ester at the company's offices in Madrid. ‘You have changed the way of this country is and the way this country things. Today I wanted to be with you to congratulate you and to assure you that in the next Olympics you can continue to count on us. We will be supporting you at every level’, said Galán. These sportswomen have been closely linked to the electricity company for years. María Pérez, Susana Rodríguez and Laura Ester are part of the Iberdrola Ambassadors programme, with which the company aims to give the greatest possible visibility to a selection of athletes in the media and social networks, creating new role models. Teresa Perales, for her part, is a member of the honorary jury of the Iberdrola Supera Awards, with which every year the company shows its appreciation for the hard work of those who promote the empowerment of women through sport from the grassroots. For all these reasons, and within the framework of this meeting, the Executive Chairman of the Group announced that Sara Sorribes and Elena Congost will be new Iberdrola Ambassadors. He also presented these six women with the Iberdrola Medals for Energy in Sport, in recognition of their impeccable professional careers and, in particular, their amazing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. After Elena Congost's controversial disqualification from the French Paralympic Games, Galán made a special mention for the marathon runner. The Iberdrola Executive Chairman said: ‘Elena, you have shown great competitive spirit. You sacrificed everything because, more than medals or success, the most important thing is people and team spirit. You helped a teammate who was struggling. We will support you so that you can achieve everything you set out to do. Two decades promoting equality through sport Iberdrola firmly believes that sport is one of the essential vehicles for promoting equality. Since 2016, it has been the main promoter of sport practiced by women. It currently supports 35 national federations and gives its name to more than 160 competitions. Its focus is not exclusively on elite and federated athletes. It holds the Iberdrola Supera awards every year, with a total of 300,000 euros distributed among six categories. It is also promoting actions in addition to mere sponsorship, such as organising of sporting events or communication campaigns, including its Iberdrola Ambassadors programme. The encouragement of the electricity company also extends to Paralympic sport. Since its creation in 2005, it has collaborated with the Spanish Paralympic Committee's (CPE) Paralympic Sports Support Plan (ADOP) to provide our athletes with the best conditions to prepare and undertake their participation in all their competitions with guaranteed success. Likewise, Iberdrola, through its Foundation in Spain and together with the Spanish Paralympic Committee, provides Paralympic athletes who are beneficiaries of the Paralympic Sport Support Plan with scholarships for university and postgraduate training. This collaboration agreement aims to facilitate the professional training of athletes so they can join the job market once their sporting career is over. Finally, it is worth remembering that the company is one of the companies collaborating with Universo Mujer, a comprehensive initiative for the development of women and their personal growth in society, which was created to develop initiatives that contribute to improving and transforming society through the values of all women's sport.
