14/10/2024Galán confirms Iberdrola's commitment to the UK at the International Investment Summit with Starmer Iberdrola is consolidating its position as a top company in the United Kingdom , and its Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán met with the country's Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and other members of the government at the new British government's first international investment summit to present the new roadmap for the electricity company in the country. During his private meeting with Starmer, Galán personally restated the electricity company's new roadmap in the country, a plan that envisages doubling the investment forecast to more than 28,000 million euros by 2028. Ignacio Galán was the only representative of a large Spanish company at the summit, which was attended by the c-suites of a dozen multinational giants from around the world. Galán has been in contact with several authorities in the UK executive and explained his decision to continue investing in the country after it has already become Iberdrola's top investment destination until 2026. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, "People will reap the benefits of Iberdrola's investment in our country's green energy sector. Iberdrola's choice of the UK as its top investment destination is a major boost to our economy and a clear vote of confidence in the ambitious mission to drive clean energy and growth”. Galán explained that the company's decision "is an expression of our confidence in the UK's clear and stable policies" and added that "the benefits of electrification in terms of energy security, industrial development, jobs and decarbonisation are ambitions shared by the UK and Iberdrola". The update of the plan is driven by the UK's significant growth prospects for energy demand and its energy policies aimed at promoting net zero emissions and boosting electrification. Destination of investments Two-thirds of the investment planned by the company chaired by Ignacio Galán will go to distribution and transmission grids. The investment requirement in the latter will increase due to the improvements required in the country under the 2026–2031 regulatory framework, known as RIIO-T3, which will be approved next year. Investments will include, for example, the new Eastern Green Link 1 underwater interconnection. Iberdrola is in the final stages of completing the integration of the Electricity North West (ENW) energy distribution company, whose acquisition for 5,000 million euros was signed at the beginning of August. This company distributes electricity in the northwest of England and will continue to invest to maximise security of supply, to connect more renewable energies and to promote the country’s electrification. Iberdrola will also start up the East Anglia 3 offshore wind farm, which is currently under construction, and the recently awarded East Anglia 2, which will require an investment of around 4 billion pounds (around 4.8 billion euros). This latter project will provide enough green energy to power the equivalent of around one million homes. The company also continues to invest in new onshore wind, solar PV and battery projects. In the last three months alone, the company has announced new investments of 8 billion pounds (close to 10 billion euros): the East Anglia 2 offshore wind farm and ENW. This amount is in addition to the more than 36 billion euros (30 billion pounds) that the company has invested in the country since the purchase of ScottishPower, the subsidiary with which it operates there. 11/10/2024 - 18:32 UTC +02:00Electricity distributed by Iberdrola reaches all-time highs Iberdrola's distributed electricity has reached an all-time high, registering 177,943 GWh in the first nine months, an increase of 2.5% compared to the same period last year. The good performance in electricity distribution was driven by the recovery of electricity demand in all the markets where the company is present. To respond to this increase in demand, in the first nine months Iberdrola has once again set a new record for renewable generation, reaching 63,300 GWh, an increase of 7.4% compared to the same period last year. Offshore wind leads the growth, with an increase of 18%. This new all-time record, which adds to those obtained in the first two quarters of the year, comes thanks to the investments made to continue accelerating the deployment of renewable energy and the increased production and management of clean energy, especially manageable technologies such as pumped storage hydro. The company has installed more than 2,800 MW of renewable energy in the last twelve months, which represents an increase of 7% compared to the same period last year. The expansion of offshore wind leads the way, which grew by 47.5% in this period, to almost 2,400 MW of capacity, thanks mainly to new offshore wind farms in France and Germany. The group's total renewable capacity now exceeds 44,100 MW, as reported today by the company to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). By renewable technologies, wind power represents more than 41% of the company's total energy mix, followed by hydroelectric, which represents 23.3%. Leading clean energy The capacity to manage renewable resources in Spain has also supported record generation in the country. More than 25,600 GWh of renewables production was recorded in Spain in the first nine months of 2024, an increase of 24.8% compared to the same period last year. The lower production of onshore wind was offset by the increase in hydroelectric generation- supported by pumped storage hydro. Currently, 84% of the company's production is emission-free. In countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Greece and Bulgaria, the group generates 100% emission-free energy. In Spain this percentage stands at 91%. With its new capacity, Iberdrola will continue to promote energy self-sufficiency and electrification, to deliver greater energy and economic efficiency for customers. The company's total production stands at more than 100,000 GWh (-19%), taking into account that the company sold 8,500 MW of combined cycle plants in Mexico in the first quarter of 2024. Commitment to electrification For more than two decades Iberdrola has been at the forefront of the energy transition, with investments that exceed 160 billion euros in that period. Looking forward, Iberdrola is delivering an investment plan that will reach 46 billion euros – 41 billion euros announced the company’s strategic plan, plus 5 billion for the acquisition of ENW in the UK. 09/10/2024 - 16:04 UTC +02:00Ignacio Galán: "People have to be the focus of any business" The Comillas Pontifical University has awarded an honorary doctorate to the Executive Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán , for his career and his involvement and commitment to green energy. Galán focused his speech on defending the economy’s electrification since it contributes to improving productivity, improves access to essential services such as education and health and promotes social and economic inclusion. In his speech, he recalled the "social dividend" as a hallmark of the company "with which we are explicitly committed to ensuring that our business is a daily source of jobs, innovation, protection of the environment, contribution to the public coffers and protection of the most vulnerable groups", and added that "never in history has it been more necessary for companies to act truly responsibly towards the communities they serve. People have to be the focus of any business". At the beginning of his speech, Galán had some affectionate words for the university where he studied engineering. "In receiving this doctorate today, I pledge my personal commitment to preserving the honour bestowed upon me and to pass on the legacy I received from this institution", he assured after thanking the university, his family and his colleagues at the ICAI for this recognition. "Each of us is given certain abilities – some innate and others acquired throughout our lives – and our duty is to make the most of them, to develop this material, intellectual and spiritual wealth, and to make it grow for the benefit of all", he said. Galán recalled his five decade-long career, his time at Tudor batteries, ITP aeronautics, telecommunications at Airtel and, finally, electrical energy at Iberdrola, on which he focused the bulk of his speech. He said he has had three maxims at work: people, i.e. talent, innovation and internationalisation. Galán insisted that renewable energy sources will give society "greater security and independence, reduce our vulnerability and our dependence on imports". The Executive Chairman of Iberdrola offered some figures on the future of electrification, such as the fact that electricity demand will double in the next 25 years, according to the International Energy Agency. European households' energy bills can be reduced by 45% by 2050 by replacing oil and natural gas with renewable electricity, according to Eurelectric. The Executive Chairman acknowledged that past experience has taught him that any industrial reconversion is tremendously complex and therefore requires courage, determination and a community outlook. However, he urged us to "distance ourselves equally from the dogmatism that demonises certain energy solutions and from the immobility promoted by those who see a status quo that they have been favoured by for decades as being in danger". The event, held in the Aula Magna of the university and attended by some 400 guests, was presided over by the rector, Antonio Allende Felgueroso SJ. The laudatio was given by Professor Mariano Ventosa, Vice-Rector for Research and Teaching Staff and an expert in electronic engineering. Galán is the seventh honorary doctor in the history of ICAI. Previous recipients include a US Secretary of Energy, a president of MIT, leading scientists and former professors. It is, therefore, the first time that a businessman and alumnus of the centre has received this distinction at ICAI. In its history, the University of Comillas has only recognised around thirty other people, including, for example, three 'fathers of the Constitution' and important international jurists and economists. Some of the other recognitions and awards that the Executive Chairman of Iberdrola has received are honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh (2011), from the University of Salamanca (2011), and from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow). He was also named 'Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire' by Queen Elizabeth II. READ MORE
