05/08/2026 - 10:57 UTC +02:00Iberdrola deploys innovative real-time smart grid control technology in the UK Last July, ScottishPower Electricity North West, the distribution business of ScottishPower, Iberdrola Group's subsidiary in the UK , connected a 30 MW utility-scale battery using a real-time active network management system, eliminating the need for additional network reinforcement. The technology, known as Active Network Management (ANM), continuously monitors network conditions and automatically responds when it detects potential constraints by adjusting power flows to ensure safe and reliable operation. Since it was commissioned, the system has been activated more than 400 times, enabling the battery to operate virtually without interruption while utilising 99% of the available energy, resulting in greater efficiency, improved control and lower operational risk. Thanks to this system, the battery was connected three years earlier than planned, generating estimated savings of €3.7 million. The project demonstrates Iberdrola's progress in the digitalisation of its electricity networks through smart solutions that accelerate the connection of new renewable energy and storage assets, optimise existing network capacity and strengthen security of supply. The award was presented by Benigno Pendás, President of Cursos de La Granda and of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. The distinction is awarded to individuals of outstanding intellectual, institutional or cultural prestige. The presentation took place during the official opening ceremony of the 48th edition of the Cursos de La Granda in Avilés. The event included a tribute delivered by Fernando Becker, and was attended by a number of institutional representatives. Through this recognition, the Royal Academy acknowledged Ignacio Galán's career and his contribution to thought, culture and public debate. Iberdrola's executive chairman is one of the world's leading figures in the energy sector, having been an early champion of electrification through clean energy , smart grids and energy storage to strengthen energy autonomy, security and competitiveness. Since 2001, Ignacio Galán has led the profound transformation of Iberdrola, turning it into Europe's largest electricity company and one of the two largest worldwide by market capitalisation, now valued at more than €140 billion. Today, the company operates in dozens of countries and supplies electricity to 100 million people. Strong ties with Asturias During his speech, Galán highlighted the special significance of receiving the award in Asturias, a region with which he has long-standing personal and professional ties. The Iberdrola executive chairman underlined the principality's historic role as a driver of major transformations in Spain and praised its ability to combine tradition with modernity, entrepreneurship with culture, and a strong identity with an outward-looking point of view. Galán also noted that Iberdrola has witnessed – and played an active role in – the transformation of Asturias, which has evolved from an economy based on coal into a centre of development driven by electrification and clean energy. In just five years, Iberdrola has increased its procurement from Asturian suppliers to €1.6 billion while developing pioneering electrification projects that have helped create jobs, stimulate economic activity and generate new opportunities across the region. During his address, Galán stressed that the world is facing a historic opportunity to drive a new wave of industrialisation based on electrification, strengthening energy autonomy, improving competitiveness and advancing sustainability. In this context, he pointed out that over the past 25 years Iberdrola has invested almost €40 billion in Spain in clean energy, electricity networks and energy storage, and reaffirmed the company's ambition to consolidate its position as the country's leading industrial investor. 31/07/2026 - 11:29 UTC +02:00Iberdrola plans to double the capacity of Whitelee, the UK's largest onshore wind farm Iberdrola, through its UK subsidiary ScottishPower , has announced a plan to repower Whitelee, the country's largest onshore wind farm , in the coming years. The initiative, which would involve investments of €1.8 billion, involves replacing the current wind turbines with more modern and powerful turbines in the coming years, increasing the complex's capacity from the current 539 megawatts (MW) to 1,000 MW. Once completed, Whitelee would produce enough clean energy to supply more than one and a half million people. The project's positive impact also extends to boosting economic activity and employment, generating €380 million in gross value added for the Scottish economy over the next decade and hundreds of jobs. Whitelee is one of the leading benchmarks for electrification with renewables in Europe. Since it came online in 2008, the wind farm has supplied clean electricity to millions of homes and has become a strategic asset for the British electricity system. Repowering will make it possible to leverage existing infrastructure to extend its useful life and maximise its contribution to the electrification of the economy and decarbonisation. This project is part of Iberdrola's commitment to the UK, one of the Group's main investment destinations. 27/07/2026 - 13:47 UTC +02:00Iberdrola strengthens the development of the Labraza wind farm with €29 million in EIB financing Iberdrola España, subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in Spain , and the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), have strengthened the development of the Labraza wind farm in Álava following the signing of a €29 million green loan with the European Investment Bank (EIB). With an installed capacity of 40 MW, Labraza will be the first wind farm to enter operation in the Basque Country since 2006. Located in the municipality of Oion, the project represents a total investment of €59 million and will generate nearly 100,000 MWh of clean energy each year, enough to supply around 75,000 people while avoiding approximately 16,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The construction of the wind farm will also help stimulate the local economy and the wind energy supply chain. Around 100 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, while the project will also deliver positive benefits for nearby municipalities and businesses. The project also includes community participation mechanisms and renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) at competitive prices for local businesses. This financing will support the development of key infrastructure to advance electrification , strengthen energy security and increase renewable energy generation in the Basque Country. The company has launched a dedicated plan to ensure the city's electricity infrastructure is fully prepared to meet the demands of an international event that will bring together thousands of athletes, technical teams, support staff and spectators. As part of this initiative, SP Energy Networks is testing its Mobile Asset Assessment Vehicle (MAAV) on the streets of Glasgow. Using an electrical scanning system, the vehicle can detect hidden faults in the underground network that cannot be identified through traditional inspections, allowing potential issues to be addressed before they affect electricity distribution and supply. The initiative forms part of a wider network preparedness programme covering Glasgow's more than 8,000 kilometres of overhead lines and underground cables, as well as nearly 4,000 substations. In addition to using real-time data to identify and resolve potential anomalies, the company is deploying additional monitoring equipment, automated controls, thermal imaging technology and on-call engineering teams to ensure the highest levels of network reliability throughout the Commonwealth Games. 21/07/2026 - 18:31 UTC +02:00Iberdrola acquires Finland’s largest electricity distribution company, valued at €5 billion Iberdrola has reached an agreement to acquire Caruna, Finland’s leading electricity distribution company, in a transaction valuing 100% of the company at around €5 billion, including its financial debt. The transaction will involve a payment of €2 billion for 80% of the company’s equity, while Nordic pension funds AMF and Elo will retain their current 20% stake. Caruna is the country’s largest electricity distribution operator and serves one and a half million people –more than 20% of the Finnish population–. The company has a network of approximately 89,000 kilometres, 67% of which is underground. Caruna operates, through two distribution concessions, in the area surrounding central Helsinki and in the Joensuu region —with strong industrial activity and growing demand linked to new data centres, as well as residential developments— and in other areas of western and north-eastern Finland. Network growth and new opportunities The acquisition, together with the recent divestment of thermal power plants in Mexico, reinforces Iberdrola’s strategy of focusing its investments on the networks business in stable markets with attractive regulatory regimes: Finland has an AA+ credit rating and a regulatory framework in place until 2031 that offers a return on equity of around 8%. The company is expected to increase its earnings and asset base by around 7% annually over the coming years, with annual investments of between €200 million and €300 million to reinforce and digitalise its electricity network in a context of strong growth in renewable capacity1. These investments could increase in the future due to growing demand, the electrification of the economy, the expansion of data centres and the development of electricity transmission infrastructure, which Finnish regulation has allowed distribution companies to undertake since the beginning of 2026. Completion of the acquisition is expected in the first quarter of 2027, subject to obtaining customary regulatory approvals for this type of transaction.
