19/10/2017The Royal Spanish Hockey Federation and Iberdrola present the Iberdrola Hockey League 2017-2018 This morning the Royal Spanish Hockey Federation and Iberdrola presented the new Iberdrola Women's Hockey League 2017-2018, in an event held at the headquarters of the National Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes de España, CSD) in Madrid. The presentation was attended by the president of the CSD, José Ramón Lete, the president of the Royal Spanish Hockey Federation, Santiago Deó, the head of Iberdrola Sponsorships, Carmen Cabrera, and players' representatives. One of the changes in the new championship is its name, which has become the Iberdrola Hockey League, in the context of Iberdrola's sponsorship of the CSD's Universo Mujer (Women's Universe) programme, the aim of which is to promote and develop women's sport as a tool to acknowledge the important role of women in sport, in particular, and in society in general. The Iberdrola League is formed by 10 teams, competing in a regular league with 18 rounds. Subsequently, the top eight teams will face each other in a play-off, with the four remaining teams after this play-off round facing each other in the Final Four, which will be held on 1, 2 and 3 June 2018. In this regular league, one match will be played every weekend, which can be followed via streaming, in which the best player will receive the Iberdrola MVP award. Iberdrola, promoter of women's sports Iberdrola has become the main driving force in the CSD's Universo Mujer (Women's Universe) programme, as the first company to commit to promoting women's participation in all areas of sports. According to this agreement reached last year, and recently renewed, with the National Sports Council, the company provides its support to several sports federations, including gymnastics, swimming, football, triathlon, badminton, canoeing, rugby, handball, volleyball and hockey, which have been joined in the last few weeks by five new women's federations: athletics, karate, boxing, table tennis and ice sports. These sports were selected because of the extraordinary level of success they have achieved, the high participation rate, the existence of schemes to promote the sports at the grass-roots level, and the existence of other social projects. With this initiative, Iberdrola is leading the charge for supporting women's sports and helping to promote a source of positive values for a more healthy, egalitarian and just society. READ MORE

18/10/2017Iberdrola and the G2020 platform analyse the consequences of climate change Today, the G2020 Platform will be hosting a seminar entitled ‘Climate Change. How it Affects You and What You Can Do at the Cervantes Institute in Madrid, in collaboration with Iberdrola. The aim of this meeting was to analyse the consequences of climate change from different standpoints, tackling crucial topics such as transport, energy, food and health. They also discussed the need to foster regulatory and business initiatives to encourage compliance with emission reduction goals under the Paris Agreement, which Spain endorsed last January. According to attendants, it is important for these initiatives to be backed by the engagement of civil society. The meeting on Climate Change. How it Affects You and What You Can Do was attended by different experts in the field, who were introduced by the chairman of the G2020 Platform, Salvador Sánchez-Terán. Víctor Viñuales, the CEO of Ecodes, explained how citizens are affected by climate change in their everyday lives. Ana Belén Sánchez, the coordinator of the Sustainability Department at Fundación Alternativas, then analysed the issue from an energy and transport perspective, as both sectors are directly linked to the global rise in temperature. The third topic on the table was health. The head of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Department of the National School of Health, Julio Díaz, described the effects of extreme temperatures on people's health. To round off the meeting, journalist Manuel Planelles from El País, who specialises in environment, climate change and energy, offered his point of view on the role governments should play in the problem. A debate ensued, moderated by journalist María Rey, about how each individual can put forward solutions. About the G2020 Platform The G2020 Platform has the main goal of bettering society based on the conviction that better informed citizens are the key to maximising our chances of overcoming the growing challenges our environment entails. This Platform believes that raising citizen awareness and knowledge is an essential step towards a democratic regeneration for redefining political and social values. This calls for practical collaborative intelligence initiatives, in a society faced with profound changes. The pressing need for change represents extraordinary opportunities, but also major challenges in people's daily lives, on a personal, professional and social level. Iberdrola combats climate change Iberdrola, a leading company in clean energy with a strong sustainable energy model, is convinced that time is of the essence in the battle against climate change. The company believes that the transition towards a low-carbon economy is unstoppable, and the electric sector should be one of the main drivers of this shift. Guided by this conviction, the Iberdrola Group has been wagering on a low-carbon energy mix based on clean technology for over 15 years. Today, the company's emissions are 34% lower than the average for the European electricity sector. To further this achievement, Iberdrola has made a strong pledge: to lower its emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2007 figures, and to be carbon-neutral by 2050. READ MORE

The event was also attended by players from the teams participating in the 2017-2018 Iberdrola League. “We have many things to celebrate in our sport. One of these is having been able to band together to create a competition like this Iberdrola League that we are presenting today. We are at a turning point, moving forward. Iberdrola joining the women's league was an important boost. Adding the name ‘Iberdrola’ to the League not only gives us an outstanding partner, but demonstrates that if such a company supports us, we must be doing things right" commented the President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation Agustín Martín Santos, who also expressed gratitude for the National Sports Council’s Universo y Mujer (Universe and Women) programme in its “support for women's sports and volleyball”. “We are the foremost women’s sport, the one in which there are more women than men,” pointed out the head of the federation in his speech before reviewing the main data on women's volleyball in Spain. “None of the progress we are making would be possible without the effort put in by the players and clubs. I wish to express my appreciation of everyone’s work and outstanding performance, particularly the athletes; you have set an example with your perseverance and exemplify values that are sorely needed in such trying times. Our country needs your effort, your perseverance and your discipline,” declared Agustín Martín Santos. Next Laura Naranjo, a player in Fachadas Dimurol Libby’s, spoke on behalf of the members of all the clubs in the Iberdrola League, who wished to share "how excited and thrilled they are with this season that is just starting”. “Each player wearing her team's kit in an Iberdrola League match is an example of willpower, as well as a further example of the many sacrifices required in women's sports. This is why it is so important to be able to count on the collaboration of all the institutions and organisations helping us along our path,” declared the captain of the Tenerife club. She was especially grateful for Iberdrola's support. “Its support for volleyball and women’s sports is what we need to flourish as athletes and to make our sports dreams come true,” said the libero. “The situation of women's sports in Spain makes us very happy. We are especially happy because we have become the main driving force behind women's sports in this country,” affirmed the sponsorship manager for Iberdrola, Carmen Cabrera. “We are here to support women's sports because one of the pillars of our strategic plan is promoting the role that women play. The goal of this support is to make women's athletic achievements known to all,” said Cabrera. “We must ensure that your accomplishments reach more people, and make more girls want to play volleyball and see you as their role models. Our commitment will be enduring,” added Cabrera addressing the players in the event. The final words were spoken by the General Director of the Sports Council, Jaime González, who described the association with Iberdrola as “a perfect example of collaboration between the public and private sectors to promote Spanish sports”. “We wish to emphasise the programmes supported by the Sports Council in the various branches of sports, such as the Universo y Mujer (Universe and Women) programme, which benefits women's sports and is integral to promoting women’s participation in sports,” he added. “Iberdrola is a perfect example of how to promote sports. Your commitment falls within a collaboration agreement, a safe bet, as it is based on values such as perseverance, effort, and teamwork,” indicated González, who stressed the Sports Council's intention to continue supporting women's sports. “Never lose hope. Hope is the true engine of change. It makes me very happy to see federations and sports like this one want to continue doing good work and making progress,” remarked the General Director of the Sports Council. Iberdrola, promoter of women's sports Iberdrola has become the main driving force in the National Sports Council (CSD) Universo Mujer (Women's Universe) programme, as the first company to commit to promoting women's participation in all areas of sports. 10/10/2017Iberdrola renews its support for Women’s Universe, the programme promoting women’s sport In Madrid today the chairman of the Higher Council for Sports (Consejo Superior de Deportes, CSD) José Ramón Lete, and Iberdrola's chairman, Ignacio Galán, renewed the agreement under which the company has become the main sponsor of Women's Universe, the programme that seeks to promote and encourage women’s sport. The signing took place at the CSD’s High Performance Centre (CAR). Women's Universe is a CSD programme that aims to promote and develop women’s sport as a way to recognise the important role played by women in sport in particular and society in general. During his speech, Ignacio Galán recalled the successes reaped by Spanish sportswomen in recent months, such as the six medals at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, the other six medals won in various gymnastic disciplines and the continuing position of Spanish badminton as world leader. “But sport is not only about triumphs and big championships,” added the Iberdrola chairman. “Above all else, it is perseverance, sacrifice and the will to succeed. Thousands and thousands of anonymous sportswomen demonstrate this every day. It is this exemplary attitude that we want to promote.” José Ramón Lete emphasised and thanked Iberdrola for its real commitment to women’s sport and a healthier, more equal and fairer society. “We still have a long way to go and for this we need a travelling companion like Iberdrola,” he said. Lete also noted that “sport and its protagonists are essential promoters of our country’s brand,” and unveiled the latest data from the Elcano Royal Institute's Image of Spain Barometer. “Spanish sportsmen and women are the third most highly rated element, after our attractiveness as a tourist destination and our cuisine; seven out of every ten foreigners interviewed placed you as one of our most distinctive characteristics. “You sportswomen defy stereotypes, break thorugh boundaries and ceilings, and you become an inspiration and a model to follow, offering leadership abilities to women and girls,” he said. Iberdrola’s support for women It is now a year since Iberdrola joined the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport’s Women's Universe programme and the company is expanding its support to include another five women’s federations: athletics, karate, boxing, table tennis and ice sports. These join the 10 that are already supported by the group: gymnastics, triathlon, swimming, rugby, canoeing, badminton, football, handball, volleyball and hockey. Iberdrola is therefore reaffirming its support for sportswomen through Women’s Universe: both by supporting the national teams and sports clubs through their leagues as well as by supporting individual players, with the launch of the new scholarship programme. There are already 17,500 federation members who are benefiting from this agreement and it is hoped that its renewal will bring this number to over 20,000. Attending this morning’s event, in addition to Ignacio Galán and José Ramón Lete, were the secretary of the Iberdrola board of directors, Julián Martínez-Simancas; the CSD’s director general for Sports, Jaime González Castaño, the deputy general director of Women’s Universe, Susana Pérez Amor, and the director of the Youth Sport Foundation, Alfonso Jiménez Prado. They were accompanied by Women’s Universe sportswomen and ambassadors Jennifer Pareja, Eli Pinedo, Patricia García and Sandra Sánchez. As stated in its Equal Opportunities and Balance Policy, which has been approved by the board of directors, Iberdrola considers that equality between men and women is one of the company’s essential values. As Ignacio Galán noted today, in 2016 five times more women joined the group than two years ago. In addition, the number of women on Iberdrola's board of directors is double the average among large Spanish companies. Out of the 14 members of Iberdrola’s top management body five are women: Inés Macho, Mª Helena Antolín, Samantha Barber, Georgina Kessel and Denise Mary Holt. In addition, all the Board’s committees – Auditing and Risk Supervision, Appointments, Remuneration and Corporate Social Responsibility – are chaired by one of them and the lead director is a woman: Inés Macho. Iberdrola also has a firm commitment to balancing personal and work life. In 2007 the company became the first on the Ibex 35 to implement continuous all year round working, an initiative that has been joined by 70 other practices, including, for example, the flexible reduction of workdays to five hours per day until the employee's child reaches the age of one, with no reduction in the fixed salary, and the increase to 45 minutes for the reduction in the workday when breastfeeding. On this occasion, in Mexico, more regions will join International Volunteer Day, offering opportunities that range from reforestation, eco-technology, replacing existing lighting with LED lights, accompanying migrants and the improvement of facilities in shelters for children. More than 8,000 opportunities for corporate volunteers The International Volunteer Day also allows Iberdrola to make its Corporate Volunteer programme known, which it has been building up since 2006, and which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In line with the company’s activity, this programme focuses efforts on fulfilling goals number 7 (affordable and non-polluting energy), number 13 (climate action), number 3 (health and well being), number 4 (quality education) and number 10 (reducing inequality). In 2016, alone, the 8.175 volunteer activities offered worldwide through the Iberdrola trilingual volunteering portal benefited more than 1 million people both directly and indirectly. Also, Iberdrola has received various distinctions as a result of its Corporate Volunteering programme. Last year, the company received a Special Mention from the King of Spain, Felipe VI, on the occasion of the celebration of the first decade of its International Programme: "The existence and creation of this programme is an undoubted success and another manifestation of effective and tangible social responsibility," said the monarch in his visit to the headquarters of the company. In 2015, Iberdrola also received recognition for its charity activities from the Spanish NGO Cooperación Internacional. Previously, the Citizens Awards Association and the Citizen Debate Forum recognised the company's commitment to disadvantaged groups and the positive repercussions in society of its voluntary activities, both locally and internationally. 05/10/2017The Iberdrola Rugby League has arrived Jaime González Castaño, Director of the Higher Sports Council, Carmen Cabrera, head of Iberdrola sponsorships, Isabel Pérez, vice-chairman of the Spanish Rugby Federation, and Alhambra Nievas, voted the best referee in the world by World Rugby and ambassador for the Women and Rugby programme, presented the new Iberdrola Rugby League along with representatives of all the clubs from the old Iberdrola Division of Honour and of Spanish rugby. Isabel Pérez started her presentation by affirming that "Iberdrola's arrival has enabled us to form a League with 8 teams and 14 rounds and this will help improve the playing level and have a knock-on effect on the national side", and, from the federation's point of view, she added, "we also want it to be a mirror for grass roots rugby and we're sure it will be". Next Alhambra Nievas spoke and thanked everyone for "filling the room, which isn't as easy as it looks and means that the energy and unity of all the clubs is on the right track". Speaking from her international perspective, she affirmed that "Spanish women's rugby is highly regarded, but I think we have to aim for more, because the leap forward in quality that the competition is going to take with the Iberdrola League with home and away games and a rugby 7s League with 3 series is sure to give us a boost." Carmen Cabrera, representing Iberdrola, underlined that the company sponsors rugby because it is "one of the sports in which the concept of the team is best expressed". She finished her presentation by saying "last year was very positive, sportswomen are very happy, it helps that the conditions in which they practice their sports have improved and they can achieve their goals more easily and it is rewarding to see that this trend is continuing". And Jaime González Castaño closed the event by declaring himself "very happy to be able to support you today in presenting the Iberdrola Rugby League, which is a continuation of a solid, well established project that is having a fantastic impact on sport in general and on the public-private sponsorship of sports competition. A promotion that will increase the visibility of women's rugby Promotion by Iberdrola has allowed women's rugby in Spain to form a national club competition in 15-a-side rugby and 7s. Iberdrola's decision to name the championship the Women's Division of Honour, for the first time, has taken the League to hereto unknown levels of outreach and support. For the first time practically all matches were streamed and the Final, between Olímpico de Pozuelo and CRAT Universidade da Coruña was shown live and exclusively by Eurosport thanks to the efforts of the Federation and Iberdrola's backing. Players could see the support of their competition's new sponsor first hand thanks to the creation of "Iberdrola Lion" prizes awarded to the "woman of the match". The Olympic format was also boosted and promoted with the creation of the Iberdrola Queen's Grand Prix Series Cup. This brought a competition similar to the international Sevens competition format to Spain for the first time in women's rugby. The new format has attracted fresh talent to the Spanish Lions. The competition was also consolidated with the creation of a special Teledeporte programme on each of the three series, Madrid, Valencia and Valladolid; which had great success and viewing figures. The new season sees a change in name, from the Iberdrola Division of Honour to the Iberdrola Rugby League, but it retains the essence of its objective, which is to consolidate women's Rugby in Spain through the sport's values and its visibility.
