02/10/2017Iberdrola has installed over 10 million smart meters in Spain Iberdrola Distribución has exceeded the figure of 10 million digital meters installed and the infrastructure that supports them has been adapted to a smart grid, which means the company has modernised 95% of all its meters in Spain. Iberdrola has also adapted some 67,000 transformer centres across Spain, incorporating remote management, supervision and automation capabilities. The STAR project (Grid Remote Management and Automation System) is an ambitious initiative by the company that complements the legal obligation to change meters - with powers of less than or equal to 15 kilowatts, which, in Iberdrola's case, means 10.6 million devices - with an extensive modernisation and digitalisation of the electricity grid, which is preparing this critical infrastructure for the services its customers will require in the future. This development coincides with Iberdrola's vocation to efficiently provide a quality service to its customers, ensuring its electricity grid is ready for future services and requirements, thus contributing to the growth of the country's economy and the well-being of its citizens. Using a mobile app or the website --www.iberdroladistribucion.es -- customers can consult their daily, weekly and monthly consumption curves, their peak power demand and much more. This data reveals how the electricity consumption is distributed for more efficient use and to be able to decide which rate suits the customer’s profile best. Remote management enables immediate execution of any services the customer requires, such as changes of contracted power, unscheduled meter readings, contract acceptance and cancellation, etc. The adaptation to a smart grid lets Iberdrola monitor and remotely and automatically control the electricity grid, enabling it to stay ahead of potential incidents and improve the quality of the service it provides to customers. The information available enables the electricity distribution grid to be operated more efficiently, reducing losses and increasing safety. Iberdrola uses the highest international standards and robust, maximum security encryption algorithms that guarantee the authentication, confidentiality and privacy of every one of its digital devices by means of unique user name and password identification. Furthermore, the digital meters use high-security cryptographic keys, in accordance with internationally established standards in the sector, ensuring data packages leave encrypted and authenticated. The digitalisation of the grid - providing an infrastructure that carries electricity and data - facilitates the integration of the renewable energy distributed, the management of a grid that is going to be increasingly active, and the future mass integration of electric vehicles. In addition, the information received about the state of grid operation enables optimisation of the necessary investments, improvement of the maintenance work and, in short, increases in operating efficiency. Iberdrola boosts business sector The gradual roll-out of smart grids in Spain once again demonstrates Iberdrola's strong pull on the domestic business sector and its positive impact on job creation and maintenance. The STAR project will require an overall investment by the company in Spain of over €2 billion. It is expected to be completed in the year 2018 and will involve the replacement of over 10.6 million meters and the adaptation of some 80,000 transformer stations Iberdrola is developing similar projects in the countries where it is active, provided that the appropriate regulatory conditions are met, which will give the companies collaborating in the STAR project access to significant business opportunities. 26/09/2017Ignacio Galán, Isabel García Tejerina and Íñigo Méndez de Vigo staged their commitment to fighting climate change The chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and the Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, and the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, today attended a performance of the children’s play My Clean World by Blanca Marsillach’s theatre company, which took place in the north auditorium of Feria de Madrid (Ifema). At the end of the show, Galán, Tejerina and Méndez de Vigo had a chance to chat on the stage with five of the 270 children who attended the performance. They answered the questions posed by the company chairman and the ministers about the environment and climate change. Also present at this get-together was the director of Varela Producciones, Blanca Marsillach, the producer of the play. Iberdrola has incorporated the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into its business strategy, this event allowed Iberdrola to address two of these goals: number 13, climate action, and number 17, partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society. As part of its commitment to fighting climate change, the company has set the goal of reducing its emissions by 2030 by 50% from 2007 levels and being carbon-neutral in 2050. Since 2000, Iberdrola has succeeded in reducing its specific emissions in Europe by 75%. As a result of this strategy, the company's emissions are currently 70% lower than those of its competitors. About ‘My Clean World’ My Clean World is a musical about caring for the environment that was written for a family audience. It aims to increase the audience members’ awareness of the need to fight climate change and slow down the degradation of the planet. The production features seven original songs and a karaoke song in which the characters from the story – Cortés the bull from Seville, Iggy the penguin, Penelope the squirrel and Mother Earth – seek to make the audience aware of ecological values. During 2016, My Clean World was seen by more than 7,280 school children in Madrid and it also travelled to the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Tetuan for Moving for Climate NOW, a bicycle journey of over 1,000 kilometres to the Climate Summit in Marrakech. Last March, it was performed in the Spanish province of Biscay in front of 400 school children during Iberdrola Week, which ended in the celebration of the group’s General Shareholders’ Meeting. 24/09/2017Iberdrola crosses 2,000 MW threshold for renewables in the United Kingdom Following the completion of a £650 million investment programme to build eight new onshore wind farms, Iberdrola, through its subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables, has now passed the 2,000 megawatt (MW) milestone for UK wind power capacity. In just over 18 months we put over 470 MW of wind power online, enough to supply more than 280,000 homes with the substantial environmental and financial benefits for the United Kingdom. Iberdrola's subsidiary has called for politicians and regulators to support the future development of onshore wind in Scotland - one of cheapest forms of green energy - citing the need to hit carbon reduction targets and support the anticipated increase in demand to charge electric vehicles. Studies made by the Iberdrola subsidiary shows that 66% of the total investment in onshore wind has been spent in the UK, and over three quarters of the total UK investment has been spent in Scotland. If the UK Government is serious about reducing carbon emissions and having enough clean power to support the huge expected growth in electric vehicles, then more onshore wind power is essential. One new onshore wind turbine could power around 7,000 electric vehicles, but we need to act now to meet the growing demand. Scottish Government Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy, Paul Wheelhouse, said that “investing in renewables is key to Scotland’s transition to a low carbon future. It has not only brought jobs to our communities, and boosted our economy, but it has contributed to the progress of Scotland’s world leading climate change targets.” “I am therefore delighted to hear that ScottishPower has now passed the threshold of having installed 2 GW of energy capacity from renewable sources. This is a great achievement and I look forward to more GWs of capacity coming on line in the future.” The renewable energy subsidiary ScottishPower understands that if the industry were to have a level playing field with other technologies, a further 2,000 MW could be built in Scotland by 2020. These projects would complement offshore and ensure that the UK has enough green electricity to power a clean energy future. In Scotland, Iberdrola has already conducted research and studies at dozens of potential onshore wind farm sites that could deliver a further capacity of over hundreds of megawatts of clean electricity. 24/09/2017Iberdrola and the AECC highlight researchers’ work in the fight against cancer As part of the celebration of World Cancer Research Day, Iberdrola and the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC) carried out an awareness-raising event in the Square of the Reina Sofía National Art Centre at calle Santa Isabel, 52 in Madrid, in which they highlighted scientific research as one of the priorities in the fight against cancer. During the event, which required citizens’ collaboration, a multitude of small photographs of real researchers were lit up in a giant mural, thus forming a mosaic with the day’s motto, Luz a la investigación [Light to research] (#luzalainvestigacion). Participants could light up the mosaic using Social Media and on the website www.luzalainvestigacion.es , as well as by pushing a button installed alongside the mural. Different informative sessions were also organised to highlight the important work these professionals do in the fight against the disease. These activities promoted jointly by Iberdrola and the AECC, particularly included talks by scientists on different aspects of cancer, on the advances in treatment and new research tools. Alongside this and throughout the day, 30-minute children’s workshops were held to make science and the human body more real for them. This initiative by Iberdrola and the AECC is part of the collaboration the two institutions signed in 2015, with a view to working together on organising and publicising information and awareness campaigns and thereby increasing the help that is needed for furthering cancer research. As part of this agreement, both entities jointly launched the Juntos contra el cáncer [Together against cancer] campaign by which the electricity company offers its customers the chance to collaborate with the AECC each month through their electricity or gas bill. Iberdrola also agrees to match its customers’ chosen contribution, which may be 0.25, 0.5 or 1 euro a month. IBERDROLA, committed to society In turn, with this pioneering project IBERDROLA reaffirms its commitment to society in initiatives that enhance quality of life: not just for those within its own organisation, but for the general public, as proof of its contribution to sustainable development. 19/09/2017Ignacio Galán speaks at the UN to highlight the employment and welfare opportunities brought about by a low carbon economy The Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, attended a high-level meeting hosted by the UN Secretary-General, as part of the opening of the UN General Assembly in New York and the celebration of Climate Week in the city. In his speech, Galan stressed the key role the electricity sector can play in achieving a low-carbon economy, even though it only represents 25% of global emissions. The company's Chairman believes that "electricity provides a great opportunity to achieve quick and effective decarbonisation, leading to an electrification of the economy that could spur employment and prosperity." At the forum, which was attended by the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and which was entitled Financing the 2030 Agenda: Unlocking Prosperity, Ignacio Galán explained that "the fight against climate change is a shared responsibility that must involve every sector of the economy. Together we can make a significant contribution by taking advantage of the opportunities provided by a clean economy and by developing regulatory frameworks that will attract investment and create value for everyone." The Chairman of Iberdrola also asserted that "electricity offers a great opportunity for a fast and cost-efficient way to reduce emissions." "Investment in clean generation, such as wind and hydroelectric power, as well as in smart grids, entails a social dividend through the creation of employment and well-being," he explained. Iberdrola has invested $100 billion in this area since 2000 and has managed to reduce its specific emissions in Europe by 75%. As a result of this strategy, the company's emissions are currently 70% lower than its competitors. Within the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, Galán also took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of partnerships, as reflected in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: "There is a clear need for public-private collaboration." Iberdrola at New York Climate Week Ignacio Galán's appearance at the United Nations Assembly is part of Iberdrola's participation in Climate Week NYC, where the company is playing a very prominent role. Iberdrola has signed an agreement to work alongside Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), a United Nations platform promoting access to sustainable energy, with the aim of ensuring universal and affordable access to safe, modern energy, in line with the UN SDG 7. With this agreement, signed by Ignacio Galán and the platform's CEO, Rachel Kyte, Iberdrola will support SEforALL's call to accelerate the provision of electricity to ensure universal access to sustainable energy services through different collaboration projects. The company is also the main private supporter of a conference on the Global Pact for the Environment being organised by Columbia University this week. In addition, Iberdrola is actively involved in a number of other initiatives including: the Sustainable Development Impact Summit, organised by the World Economic Forum; the committee of the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition, an initiative promoted by the World Bank and the UN Global Compact platform Pathways to Low Carbon and Resilient Development. Iberdrola, committed to the SDGs Iberdrola has incorporated the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its business strategy and Sustainability Policy. In line with its activities, Iberdrola focuses its efforts on the provision of affordable and clean energy (Goal 7) and climate action (Goal 13). The company also contributes to the rest of the SDGs. Iberdrola's contribution to the social and economic development of the communities in which it operates and to environmental protection is rendered through a sustainable energy business model. In fact, its commitment to sustainability has made Iberdrola a benchmark in indices such as FTSE4Good and the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index. Its sustainability, efficiency and competitiveness are factors that have led Iberdrola to become the only European power company present in all 18 editions of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Furthermore, the Group contributes directly to ensuring clean water and sanitation (Goal 6); it has raised its investment in R&D&I to 211 million euros in 2016 (Goal 9); it promotes respect for terrestrial ecosystems (Goal 15); and works to build alliances to meet the established goals (Goal 17). In relation to this last point, Iberdrola's participation in the Shire Alliance deserves special mention. This is the first public-private partnership in humanitarian action created in Spain, and its objective is to guarantee access to energy for refugees and displaced populations. READ MORE
