30/10/2017Moving for Climate NOW starts its cycling trip in Paris, bound for COP23 in Bonn The Moving for Climate NOW cycling trip, sponsored by the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact and Iberdrola, will start today in Paris. Participants will travel on their electric bicycles to Bonn (Germany), where the Climate Summit -COP23- chaired by the Fiji Islands will begin on the 6th of November. This initiative is an official Summit event, classified as an endorsed initiative by COP23. The multi-disciplinary cycling team will be made up of over 40 people from different organisations and countries, with the purpose of raising awareness on the importance of facing the climate change challenges, uniting efforts in all areas and the implementation of ambitious and urgent measures to combat climate change. The cycling team will disseminate these messages over an 800-km itinerary through Brussels and other European cities, such as Bruges and Urmond, reaching Bonn on the 5th of November. The Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact and Iberdrola see the Bonn Summit as a very important event, which will help speed up the definition of the Paris commitments and foster implementation of the Agreement reached during the 2015 Climate Summit held in the French capital. Upon their arrival at COP23 in Bonn, Moving for Climate NOW will present the Manifesto of this initiative to combat climate change. The document includes the fundamental principles which according to the team must be addressed when facing climate change challenges. For example, it highlights the commitment to renewable energies, the need to see the fight against global warming as an opportunity and not as a threat towards building a sustainable economic model, the urgency to unite efforts in all sectors of the society and the importance of attracting funding. And of special relevance on this edition will be measures to adapt to climate change and protecting vulnerable communities as well as raising awareness on the importance of oceans and the vital role they play in regulating climate and the planet’s health. Emissions calculation for the trip was verified by CeroCO2 and its carbon footprint has been compensated by purchasing carbon credits from the UN's Climate Neutral Now and CeroCO2 platforms. Second edition of ‘Moving for Climate NOW’ Moving for Climate NOW is running its second edition, after a group of cyclists travelled over 1,000 km last year from Seville to the COP22 Climate Summit held in Marrakesh. 27/10/2017Iberdrola will back 31 social aid projects for vulnerable groups The Iberdrola Foundation has finalised the 2017 Call for Applications for Social Grants, which seeks to contribute to social development and improved quality of life for the most vulnerable people in the Spanish territories where the company does business. A total of 31 projects have been selected for the seventh funding round, with more than 45,000 beneficiaries, and 1,088,000 euros to be allocated. Each of these initiatives will be allocated funding up to a maximum of 40,000 euros, which must be less than 50% of the project's total budget, and the project will be carried out in 2018. Furthermore, these actions encourage volunteering and directly contribute to job creation. In this edition alone, the programme will create demand for 130 jobs directly, and 260 volunteers. This initiative, which will be undertaken in Spain, springs from the company's commitment to society, especially to children, young people. Furthermore, and for the first time, this funding round of the programme will prioritise support for the most vulnerable women. 61% of the entities selected by Iberdrola’s Social Grants Programme are involved in long-term projects built on years of collaboration and alliance with the company. Of the initiatives selected in 2017, 42% are aimed at avoiding poverty and social exclusion by promoting training and job inclusion, 26% address the social inclusion of people with disabilities, and the remaining 32% improve the quality of life of people with serious illnesses. These plans are being carried out by both domestic and international non-profit organisations with a proven track record, such as: Cáritas, Save The Children, Fundación Síndrome de Down, Proyecto Hombre, Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC), Fundación Tomillo and Menudos Corazones. Furthermore, we’ve taken into consideration the criteria of rigour, transparency and good governance in these entities, and the indispensable requirement has been that they have proven experience in social projects and audited accounts for the last several financial years, as well as their by-laws and documentation published on their website. The list of selected initiatives is available on the Fundación Iberdrola España website www.fundacioniberdrolaespana.org . Iberdrola supports society Each year the company supports some thirty social projects through the invitations it has been sending out since 2010 via its foundation in Spain. To date, this Social Grants Programme has promoted over 300 projects, helping around 45,000 beneficiaries a year on average. The Iberdrola Social Grants Programme reflects the United Nationals Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which are an integral part of the company’s strategy. In line with the group’s activity, this initiative is focused on achieving goals number 1 (no poverty), goal 4 (quality education), goal 10 (reduced inequalities), goal 3 (good health and well-being) and goal 5 (gender equality). Furthermore, Iberdrola, through its foundation in Spain, is taking action in another three major fields: training and research, biodiversity and arts and culture. Of particular note in the area of training is the International Iberdrola Grants Programme; in biodiversity we can highlight the Bird Migration Programme (www.migraciondeaves.org ); and lastly, in conservation of historical and artistic heritage, Iberdrola is behind highly relevant projects like the Atlantic Romanesque Plan ( www.romanicoatlantico.org ) and the Lighting Programme for singular buildings, such as the one for the Prado Museum called Lighting the Prado). 26/10/2017Iberdrola successfully installs all 70 wind turbines at Wikinger offshore wind farm (Germany) Iberdrola has successfully installed the 70 wind turbines comprising Wikinger offshore wind farm, the renewable infrastructure which the company is building in German waters of the Baltic Sea. It is a new and significant milestone for Iberdrola as it enters the final phase for the plant’s commissioning, having completed the installation of the offshore substation and the inter-array cables connecting the wind turbines with the substation. 50Hertz, the transmission system operator responsible for connecting offshore wind farms in the German Baltic Sea to the mainland, is currently performing with highest priority the final cable laying works and the technical tests in order to be able to transport the electricity from Wikinger in a reliable manner to the consumer centres. The company, turbine manufacturer Adwen and key subcontractor Fred. Olsen Windcarrier have met all the strict deadlines set for the construction of Wikinger, overcoming the technological challenges associated to an engineering work of this magnitude and the difficulties derived from extreme weather conditions during the winter months. From this moment on, Iberdrola is moving its Wikinger base to the bespoke operation and maintenance building in the port of Sassnitz. A flagship project for Iberdrola Wikinger illustrates key elements of Iberdrola’s strategy: strong investment activity to develop efficient renewable energies; commitment to reducing emissions and fighting climate change; technological innovation and international growth; and the opening up of new markets to its suppliers with an important pull effect: the creation of some 2,000 construction jobs comprising the port of Mukran and the factories where all its components were manufactured, mainly in Germany, Denmark and Spain. With an investment of close to €1.4 billion, Wikinger has 350 megawatts (MW) installed capacity and it will generate clean energy equivalent to avoiding the emission of 600,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year. This facility, located off the north-eastern coast of the island of Rügen, will supply some 350,000 German households, representing more than 20% of the energy demand in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the region where the wind farm is located. The AD 5-135 turbines, with 5 MW unit capacity each, were manufactured by Adwen in its factories in Bremerhaven and Stade (Germany). They are the largest wind turbines installed by the company to date. They comprise a 222 ton nacelle, a rotor that is 443 feet in diameter with 254 feet long blades, and a 246 feet high tower. Adwen is progressing with the start-up of the turbines, which will be operating in 'island mode', waiting for the energisation of the grid connection as soon as possible. Fred. Olsen Windcarrier was responsible for installing the wind turbines using its jack-up installation vessel Brave Tern. Fred. Olsen related company Global Wind Service supplied 40 installation technicians for the project, with over 100 more for quality control, completion and service to safely and efficiently complete installation on 22 October. Commitment to offshore wind power Iberdrola considers offshore wind power to be key to the company's future and for this reason is committed to investing in this technology, currently focusing its activities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States. The company already has the West of Duddon Sands (WoDS) offshore wind farm in operation, jointly owned with Dong Energy and commissioned in 2014. Investment in the project was more than £1.6 billion. WoDS has an installed capacity of 389 MW and is capable of generating enough clean electricity to supply approximately 300,000 British homes. Iberdrola has already began construction at East Anglia One (EAO) in the British North Sea, one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms when it begins operation in 2020. With a budget of £2.5 billion and 90% of the supply contracts already awarded, this facility will be able to supply 714 MW of clean energy to more than 500,000 British homes. The size of EAO is unheard-of in the renewable industry. For example, the wind farm area will exceed 115 square miles (mi2), the same as 30,000 football pitches; the cable that will transmit all of the power from the offshore wind farm to the onshore facilities will be around 53 miles long; the substation area will be 12 mi2; and the wind turbine blades will be 246 feet long. Also, the construction team at Iberdrola will be working with challenging volumes. The foundations for the wind turbines alone will weigh around 747 tons, the same as six aircraft. In France, Iberdrola is also developing the Bay of Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm project, off the coast of Brittany, which will be equipped with 62 turbines of 8 MW unit capacity each and be located 20 kilometres offshore. All these investments highlight the company’s commitment with the development of renewable energy, essential to bring forward the energy transition to a decarbonised model and combat global warming. Iberdrola’s renewable capacity as of 30 September 2017 stands at nearly 29 GW with two thirds of the group’s generation capacity being emissions free. READ MORE
