26/09/2018Iberdrola, in conjunction with the Spanish embassy in the United States, have opened the exhibition ‘Recovered Memories’ in Washington Iberdrola, in conjunction with the Spanish embassy in the United States, have opened the historical-artistic exhibition Recovered Memories. Spain and Support for the American Revolution, which highlights the significant contribution made by the Spanish monarchy to the birth and creation of the United States, in the city of Washington. This collection, which can be visited at the former residence of the ambassadors of Spain, is a follow-on of the exhibition entitled Recovered Memories. Spain, New Orleans and Support for the American Revolution . Housed in the Louisiana State Museum between April and July of this year, it was visited by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain in the company of Ignacio Galán on June 15. The exhibition, which recently reached Washington and was opened in the presence of the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Spanish Embassy, Cristina Fraile, and the CEO of AVANGRID (AVANGRID ), James P. Torgeson, among others, can be visited free-of-charge until November 18. Recovered Memories, curated by José Manuel Guerrero, consists of a selection of around 100 pieces -including works of art, documents, maps, clothes, holograms, etc.- all of which serve to emphasise the relevant role played by the Spanish Crown during the American War of Independence between the years 1775 and 1783. These pieces are on loan from a variety of museums, archives, libraries and institutions, such as those of Louisiana or Missouri, in the USA, and from the Military, Archaeological, Cultural and Natural Science Museums of Spain. Furthermore, there is a range of unique items loaned by private collections and works from the Iberdrola Group art collection . The most important of these include the painting Gálvez’s March. Conquest of Baton Rouge, 1779, by Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, together with sketches; original portraits of relevant figures from the Spanish colonial period, such as Bernardo de Gálvez, Marianne Celeste Dragon and Ignacio de Balderes; historical objects; items of clothing of the time, such as the suit worn by Spanish diplomat Diego de Gardoqui; naval models and documents. The exhibition is structured around four galleries: the first focuses on discovering what the Spain of Charles III, a power during the Century of Enlightenment, was like, and also concentrating on the Spanish footprint in North America. The second space illustrates the decisive contribution made by the Spanish towards achieving the independence of the United States. The pieces exhibited in the third room examine the second front opened by Spain against Great Britain in the South after the declaration of war in 1779: the Louisiana and Florida Wars. Finally, the fourth room, Recovering Memory: Spaniards in the United States, depicts how decades after the United States gained their independence, many Spaniards emigrated to the new country in search of a better way of life. It also includes a section dedicated to the birth of electric light. Committed to the spreading of culture and the United States The organisation of this exhibition is just another example of the company's commitment towards the promotion and dissemination of both art and culture. It also emphasises Iberdrola's close links with the United States where, by way of its subsidiary AVANGRID, it has successfully consolidated itself as one of the leading companies in the energy sector. AVANGRID, which has asset base of 31 billion dollars, is one of the three largest producers of wind energy in the country and operates in 24 of its 50 states employing a total of 6,500 workers. 25/09/2018Iberdrola plans to boost U.S. renewable power by about 50 percent Ignacio Galán, Chairman of Iberdrola, has made some statements to journalist Scott DiSavino from Reuters regarding his attendance at the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2018 being held in New York. Galán said the company expects to spend about $15 billion in the United States on its transmission and distribution system and increase its renewable generation to around 10,000 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2022. “More and more investors are looking for companies with clean energy and sustainability goals,” Galán said, noting Iberdrola sells the energy that helps those companies meet those targets. Iberdrola committed to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions intensity by 50 percent by 2030 compared to 2007 levels and become carbon neutral by 2050. More than half of its 48,800 MW of generation around the world is renewable with the remainder fueled mostly by natural gas, nuclear and coal. Galán said the company wants to shut its last two coal plants, which are located in Spain, by 2020. Through its majority-owned Avangrid Inc subsidiary, Iberdrola has over 6,500 MW of renewables in the United States. It is the country’s third-biggest wind power provider behind NextEra Energy and Berkshire Hathaway. One megawatt can power about 1,000 U.S. homes. Galán said Avangrid’s customer base was changing as more companies seek to buy energy directly from wind farms to meet climate change and sustainability goals. “In recent years, large customers are also coming to us to buy renewable power directly because it is cheaper and cleaner,” Galán said, noting Iberdrola has long-term power purchase agreements with companies including Amazon.com, Alphabet’s Google and Nike. Although most wind farms Iberdrola plans to build in the United States are onshore, the company is developing Vineyard Wind off Massachusetts, the country’s first big offshore wind farm. Galán said Vineyard Wind would cost $2.5 billion $2.7 billion and is on schedule to begin construction in 2019 and become operational in 2021 and 2022. The 800 MW wind farm would be about 15 miles (24 km) south of Martha’s Vineyard. Iberdrola is also developing an offshore wind farm in North Carolina and in other U.S. East Coast states and a $950 million power transmission line to transport up to 1,200 MW of renewable energy from Quebec to New England. 25/09/2018Galán at the UN: "We have a moral obligation to stop climate change" New York. The chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, stated before the United Nations that "we have a moral obligation to stop climate change" calling leaders "to act now.” “We need to transform words into deeds, and all stakeholders must be involved: Governments, businesses and civil society,” he added during his speech at the Global Compact in Action session: Driving progress and scaling impact, held in New York within the framework of the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2018. The meeting of global leaders fighting climate change takes place coinciding with the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations and the New York Climate Week. The chairman of Iberdrola stressed the need to develop long-term strategies consistent with achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDS) by 2030, but also to adopt far-reaching measures today. "We must increase efficiency in the use of natural resources, and the electrification of the economy through renewable energy is a good example," continued Galán at a high-level meeting at the UN. At the meeting, convened by Secretary General António Guterres and attended by the President of the General Assembly, María Fernanda Espinosa, Iberdrola also pledged to support and promote the empowerment of women in society. Ignacio Galán stressed that the fight against climate change "creates business opportunities". The evolution of Iberdrola is an example of this. "Thanks to a strategy aligned with climate action over the past 20 years, involving investments of some $100 billion in renewable energy, smart grids and efficient storage – pumped-storage hydroelectric plants – our company is today cleaner, more profitable and global”. Finally, Galán asserted that "Iberdrola will continue along this path in the future", with investments of $8 billion per year in the aforementioned business areas, with the aim of "achieving a 50% reduction in its CO2 emissions intensity over 2007 levels by 2030 and being carbon neutral by 2050". Global Compact LEAD recognition In addition, the United Nations Global Compact, to which Iberdrola adhered in 2002, has recognized the company as Global Compact LEAD at an event held at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This distinction is awarded to those companies that maintain a high level of commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices and Iberdrola is the only Spanish energy company to achieve this. On the occasion of his participation in events related to the 73rd United Nations General Assembly and the New York Climate Week, Iberdrola Chairman will also meet with other global leaders in the fight against climate change. Ignacio Galán with Michael Bloomberg and Jeffrey Sachs Ignacio Galán meets today with the philanthropist and former mayor of New Yor Michael Bloomberg, one of the most important voices in climate change issues. The Chairman of Iberdrola will convey his congratulations to Bloomberg on the agreements reached at the recent Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, in which Iberdrola also participated. The company's Chairman will also meet with Jeffrey Sachs, professor of economics and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, to discuss Iberdrola's firm commitment to complying with the SDG, of which Professor Sachs is considered the intellectual father and main driving force. 19/09/2018Ignacio Galán: "the new energy model must support the companies that have been making courageous decisions for 20 years" During his presentation at the Dialogues for Democracy Club, the president of Iberdrola pointed out that "we must have a clear industrial policy that is agreed upon by all the agents involved and that favours a more sustainable energy model, supporting those who have been taking courageous decisions for 20 years, as opposed to those who have remained anchored in the past, trying to maximise their results in the short term at the cost of a better future for all. A policy governed by the principles of stability, certainty and visibility, to attract the high volumes of investment required, which have been estimated at around 100 billion euros”. During this period, Iberdrola has invested 25 billion euros in Spain, mainly in clean energy and smart electricity grids, thanks to which its emissions are now 75% lower than the rest of the sector in the country. For Ignacio Galán, "the transition towards a more sustainable economy will create important opportunities to revitalise Spanish industry". For one thing, it will boost sectors such as "renewable energy, electric mobility, building and the sustainable transformation of cities". Furthermore it will offer "other industries and regions the possibility of redirecting their activity towards new areas with greater future projection". "Europe must start a new reindustrialisation", Galán has also stated, with the objective of industry "making up 20% of GDP". To achieve this, "focus has to be placed on those areas where there is the greatest capacity to compete globally", such as "technological development and digitalisation, value-added services and the decarbonisation of the economy". 14/09/2018Iberdrola has started work on the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in Germany Berlin. Iberdrola has begun the geotechnical phase for the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, which will have a capacity of 476 megawatts (MW), representing the start of a strategic project for the company. Baltic Eagle is the second major offshore initiative that Iberdrola is undertaking in Germany, following the successful launch, at the end of 2017, of the 350 MW Wikinger wind farm. In addition, another 10 MW offshore facility in Germany, called Wikinger Süd, is under development. These three wind farms, located next to the island of Rügen, will give rise to the largest offshore wind complex in the Baltic Sea, with a total installed capacity of 836 MW and a joint investment of 2.5 billion euros. Germany has thus become a key area for Iberdrola in the coming years. The director of the Renewables Business, Xabier Viteri, stressed that Baltic Eagle "confirms the company's firm commitment to technological innovation, the development of large renewable projects, the reduction of emissions to combat climate change and the increased economic and social contribution in the territories where it is present". Christian Pegel, Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitisation with the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, welcomed the announcement, as the project represents an important contribution to the economic development of the region and to environmental protection. "The use of offshore wind energy is essential for Mecklenburg not only because of its contribution to the ecological transition in Germany but also because of the opportunities it offers for employment and industry in our coastal areas," he said. Fugro will undertake the geotechnical investigation of the seabed Fugro, a global specialist in offshore prospecting, will carry out an exhaustive geotechnical and geophysical investigation of the Baltic Eagle seabed in order to obtain the most complete information possible on the conditions in the area in which it will be located. The studies contracted by Iberdrola, valued at more than 10 million euros, will be key to meeting the construction and commissioning deadlines for this renewable facility. The investigation that has just begun includes, first of all, a study of the location and removal of possible unexploded ordnance. The programme for drilling boreholes and geotechnical investigations of the seabed will then begin, using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. In addition, a number of laboratory tests will be carried out in accordance with the requirements established by the German planning authority, Bundesamt für Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH). The data obtained by Fugro will determine the design of the foundations on which both the wind turbines and the substation will be built, which will be installed in waters up to 45 metres deep. The offshore work is expected to be completed by March 2019 and the last technical report to be submitted by the end of June 2019. Baltic Eagle and Wikinger, 45% of consumption in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania The start of these works means the launch of the Baltic Eagle project, which we were awarded last April by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), within the framework of the second offshore wind auction organised in Germany. Baltic Eagle and Wikinger will be able to produce enough energy to meet 45% of the total electricity consumption of the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and it will prevent the emission of 1.65 million tons of CO2 per year, thus contributing to meeting the emission reduction targets set by Germany. Iberdrola is cooperating with local authorities and has already provided the State Agency for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania with samples and information from geotechnical studies carried out to analyse the status and ground conditions in that area of the Baltic Sea. About Iberdrola Iberdrola is a global energy leader, the biggest producer of wind power and one of the five top power companies in the world in terms of stock market capitalisation.
