18/03/2019Iberdrola places Extremadura at the centre of its commitment to renewables in Europe, with 2,000 new megawatts by 2022 Iberdrola plans to install another 2,000 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind power in Extremadura by 2022, thus placing this region right in the middle of its European renewable strategy. The announcement was made today by the group’s Chairman, Ignacio Galán, during the groundbreaking ceremony which saw the first solar panel installed at the Núñez de Balboa photovoltaic (PV) plant in Usagre (Badajoz). Also in attendance was the President of Extremadura regional Government, Guillermo Fernández Vara, and other local authorities. Of the new projects in the region some are at an advanced stage of development, including the Ceclavín, Arenales and Campo Arañuelo I and II PV plants. The new renewable generation capacity will mean doubling up the capacity attributed to Iberdrola from the Almaraz nuclear power station[1] . This move is the result of the company’s plan to reactivate clean energy in Spain, where the company will invest €8 billion between 2018 and 2022, and commission up to 10,000 megawatts by 2030; plans which were recently presented at its Strategic Outlook update in London. “This plan will allow us to create jobs for 20,000 people, nearly 10 times the number currently working in our company on traditional power generation,” explained the Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán. The projects under development in Extremadura and the rest of Spain form part of the €34 billion global investments that Iberdrola will make between 2018 and 2022. Núñez de Balboa has 500 MW installed capacity and is the largest photovoltaic project under construction in Spain and Europe. During his speech, Ignacio Galán highlighted that “this renewable mega-facility will become the spearhead that will consolidate the leadership position of Extremadura, Spain and the European Union in the transition to a more sustainable energy system.” In this plant, scheduled to be commissioned in 2020, Iberdrola will invest some €300 million and will create up to 1,000 construction jobs. Local companies, such as Ecoenergías del Guadiana, Imedexsa, Cubillana, Elaborex and the Instituto Aeronáutico will also participate in this project. As Ignacio Galán explained, the Núñez de Balboa plant will occupy nearly 1,000 hectares surface area and will generate enough clean power to supply 250,000 people, which is more than the population of the cities of Cáceres and Badajoz combined. “The plant will also avoid the emission of 215,000 tons de CO2 into the atmosphere each year, strengthening our commitment to protecting the environment and mitigating global warming,” said the company’s Chairman. Iberdrola in Extremadura The Chairman of Iberdrola referred today to the “permanent link” between the company and Extremadura, “a union that was forged through many decades of trust and mutual commitment.” The company has 720 employees[2] in the region while creating hundreds of additional jobs through procurement from local suppliers, which in 2018 alone totalled 175 million euros. In addition, Iberdrola is working to offer the best service to its customers in Extremadura. Last year, the quality of the company’s supply to this autonomous region attained a historical record, five times better than that of ten years ago. 01/03/2019Iberdrola and IFIT back the development of renewable energy in the Canary Islands to continue to contribute to energy transition Tenerife, 1 March 2019. Iberdrola and its local partner Inversiones Financieras Isla de Tenerife (IFIT), are backing the development of renewable energy in the Canaries to continue their contribution to energy transition. This was confirmed this morning with the inauguration of the Chimiche II wind farm, their first wind farm project in the Canaries. The event was attended by the President of the Canaries Government, Fernando Clavijo; the President of Tenerife council, Carlos Alonso Rodríguez and the Mayor of Granadilla de Abona, José Domingo Regalado. Chimiche II, promoted by Energías Ecológicas de Tenerife, is the result of the combination of knowledge and understanding of the local environment - supplied by IFIT- and Iberdrola's technical and operational capability and experience in wind power development. With 18.3 megawatts (MW) of power, the initiative has required an investment of over 25 million euros, has created during the construction stage over 200 jobs and supplies clean energy to a population equivalent to 15,000 homes, avoiding the emission of 33,000 tonnes of CO2. The project has included the construction of the outgoing electricity cable and a transformer sub-station which has necessitated a complex feat of engineering to construct the electrical infrastructure over difficult terrain with a multitude of river beds. Competitive energy that boosts the job market, industry and the economy Chimiche II is an example of the model that Iberdrola and its local partner wish to follow in order to continue to contribute to energy transition in the Canaries: the roll-out of competitive, clean and sustainable power that reduces the energy dependence of the territory, creates worthwhile employment and contributes to the surrounding communities. "Projects turned into reality like this new Chimiche II wind farm are a sign of the commitment in the Canary Islands to a future that is already here in the field of clean energy, a resource that makes us better as a territory and as a society". "The commitment of the Canaries Government to the development of renewable energy in the Archipelago has involved the effort and concerted commitment of all the agents involved, who have played a vital role" explained Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canaries. “Canaries has a high potential for the development of renewables: it has good wind and solar resources and flexible demand potential. These conditions, combined with the significant reduction in the costs of renewable technology that make it competitive, the creation of quality employment, the industrial and economic boost and the positive impact that clean energy has on citizens and tourism, represent an opportunity to consider speeding up investment plans for renewables in the islands", commented Ángeles Santamaría, CEO of Iberdrola España. In this sense she pointed out that "thought needs to be given to the role that renewables are going to play in the Canaries, and to having available a regulatory framework that provides investment confidence and agile and transparent development formulas for their deployment here to become a reality. In these considerations and in future plans that the Region may have for the development of renewable energy they can rely on the commitment of Iberdrola”. “The project that we have inaugurated today has had a long history; a success story thanks to the effort and imagination of hundreds of Canaries companies, professionals and families”, said Juan Luis Lorenzo, president of Inversiones Financieras Isla de Tenerife and Energías Ecológicas de Tenerife. “We are finally standing underneath the turbines. They are finally going round". The dream has finally come true”. Top wind energy producer in Spain Iberdrola, the leading producer of energy from wind in Spain with an installed capacity of 5,770 megawatts (MW) in the country, is going to be keeping a close eye on the development of renewables in the Canaries. In Spain, total installed renewable capacity (wind and hydro-electric) is 15,789 MW. The company foresees the acceleration of investment in Spain with which to give a strong drive towards a low-carbon economy. In Spain at the moment Iberdrola is building 700 megawatts (MW) in new renewable projects and has 2,500 MW under development and a portfolio in excess of 7,000 MW. By 2022, Iberdrola expects to put into operation 3,000 new renewable MW in the country, 52% more than its current wind and solar capacity Globally, Iberdrola's renewable installed capacity is over 29,000 MW, which makes its generation armoury one of the cleanest in the energy sector. 28/02/2019The Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, took part today in Bilbao in the lecture series ‘Looking out on a digital world’ “As sophisticated as concepts like the Internet of things, robotics, artificial intelligence and big data may be, none of their functionalities will be possible without a reliable infrastructure that provides the power they need to operate. Without electricity, therefore, there is no digitisation”, said the Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, during his lecture today in the series Looking out on a digital world, organised in Bilbao by the Deusto Forum and BBVA. Galán, whose lecture was entitled Digital transformation and energy transition, emphasised that “we, electricity companies, are facing the challenge of electrifying a new era, the digital era”, the cornerstone of the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution. Therefore, “the availability of electricity under optimum conditions of security, sustainability and competitiveness is once again a vital factor in achieving solid, inclusive economic growth,” he said this morning at the University of Deusto. The Chairman of Iberdrola highlighted the fact that “beyond covering additional demand for energy, the key to making this transformation possible will be rolling out sufficiently advanced, smart electrical infrastructure.” In addition, Ignacio Galán noted that digitisation, to which Iberdrola plans to allocate some €5 billion between 2018 and 2022, “is also going to be an essential part of the energy transition process”, which involves electrifying the economy to bring about urgently needed decarbonisation. According to Galán, this will be the only way to “make the required reduction in our carbon footprint compatible with covering a demand for energy that will grow by 30% in the next 25 years”. The answer will come from “clean generating technologies, smart grids and energy storage, together with an increase in energy efficiency”. “Digital transformation, an opportunity” The chairman of Iberdrola stated that “at Iberdrola we see digital transformation as a real opportunity to create value” and he gave specific examples of the positive effects of the new technologies on all areas of the company’s business. In the area of generation, Galán explained that “100% of our generation assets (48 GW of capacity, of which around 30 GW renewables) is already managed digitally and automatically”, which helps with operations and preventive maintenance while improving the security of the system. Also, thanks to the implementation of smart grids, the company “can operate the network instantaneously, automatically and remotely which gives us a heads-up on possible incidents and helps to resolve them with greater speed and efficiency”. For example, the digitalisation of Spain’s distribution network through the STAR project – an investment of €2 billion – has meant that quality of supply is three times higher than in 2001”. In retail, by analysing Big Data, “we are constantly developing new products and services and trying to anticipate the needs of our increasingly demanding and proactive customers [customised plans],” he explained. In this context, Ignacio Galán mentioned Iberdrola’s special commitment to electric mobility . “We are already setting up 25,000 electric vehicle charging stations all around Spain, both in homes and on the roads, and we are offering our customers smart charging solutions with 100% renewable electricity, at a 10th of the cost of traditional combustion engines. “Thanks to digitalisation, we are offering the most reliable service just when our increasingly inter-connected customers are depending more on electricity to go about their daily activities,” the chairman of Iberdrola concluded. About Iberdrola Iberdrola is a global energy leader, the number one producer of wind power, and one of the world’s biggest electricity utilities by market capitalisation. The group is present in numerous countries and supplies energy to over 100 million people mainly in Spain, the United Kingdom (Scottish Power), the USA (AVANGRID), Brazil (Neoenergia) and Mexico.
