As electricity systems become increasingly decentralised, digital and interconnected, the ability to automate agreements securely and in real time is becoming ever more important. In this context, smart contracts – self-executing digital agreements powered by blockchain technology – are emerging as a valuable tool for improving efficiency, transparency and trust across the entire energy value chain.

A smart meter provides detailed information on consumption in order to reduce electricity bills and also increase knowledge about the status of the electricity grid, which improves its performance and the quality of service for customers. As part of the evolution towards a smart grid, Iberdrola has installed and continues to install millions of these devices in all the countries in which it operates distribution networks.

Two projects have been selected as winners of the NewTech Challenge launched by Iberdrola —through its International Start-up Programme - PERSEO— in which innovative solutions were sought to avoid bird collisions on its overhead distribution lines.
