12/06/2025 - 16:09 UTC +02:00Ignacio Galán affirms that energy security equals national security The Executive Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán , today participated in the Global Trends 2025 Forum organised by the US Chamber of Commerce in Spain. During his speech, Galán stressed that electrification is the fundamental pillar to guarantee strategic autonomy, industrial competitiveness and environmental sustainability Galán observed that the global demand for electricity will double in the next 15 years, thanks to new technological advances which make electrification an unstoppable process: from transport, air conditioning of buildings, to digitalisation, data processing or artificial intelligence, all of today's great inventions are based on electricity. In addition, in an increasingly automated and digitized world, having electricity is the primary requirement for accessing all our day-to-day services, since, according to the Executive Chairman, "energy security equals national security". The Executive Chairman indicated that it is essential to have a robust energy system that is not dependent on external sources and that is equipped with grid infrastructure capable of meeting this growing consumption with full reliability, emphasising that electrification must be built with indigenous energies to be competitive. He also called for urgency in strengthening electricity infrastructure, and for a regulatory framework that facilitates investments. "The EU has indicated that it needs 1.2 trillion euros in networks, and this requires attractive returns, faster permitting and minimised litigation," he said. During his participation, Galán stressed that in order to attract these investments it is essential to have stable energy policies. He recalled that investments in energy infrastructure have maturation horizons of between 40 and 60 years, so companies need a clear and predictable regulatory framework that allows them to access capital in the financial markets. In addition, he advocated attractive profitability and rationalisation of taxation. On the other hand, he called for a reduction in administrative bureaucracy, which in many cases delays projects for years that could be built in just over a year. He also called for the elimination of asymmetric tax regimes that favour gas and oil over electricity, and advocated encouraging investment in networks and storage, especially in countries such as Spain where there are regulatory limits on investment in distribution networks. The Executive Chairman noted that Iberdrola has been leading this transformation for more than two decades, with investments of more than 170,000 million euros in smart grids, renewables and storage, and with a presence in more than 30 countries. Iberdrola's market capitalisation exceeds 100,000 million euros, making it the leading utility in Europe and one of the two largest in the world. READ MORE

10/06/2025 - 17:07 UTC +02:00The Aldeatejada Technology Innovation Centre: an example of economic revitalisation in Salamanca The Technology Innovation Centre (Cenit), inaugurated in 2008 by Iberdrola in collaboration with IBM, has consolidated Aldeatejada (in Salamanca, western Spain) as one of the main technology hubs in the area thanks to its economic and social impact on the region. Aldeatejada is the best example of Iberdrola's firm commitment to innovation and represents a real commitment to the future, progress and competitiveness of the economy of Castile and León, with a cumulative investment of close to €300 million and the creation of more than 1,000 direct jobs and 1,850 indirect jobs. This enclave has undergone a remarkable evolution in technological capabilities, including artificial intelligence , cloud services, cybersecurity, automation, digital experience and business solutions, becoming a key pillar of the digital transformation of Iberdrola and other international companies. The Cenit model has had a powerful knock-on effect in the province, attracting new technology companies, generating synergies with local universities and promoting research and training initiatives, demonstrating that sustained investment in digital infrastructure, together with strategic alliances between large companies, public administrations and the education system, generates tangible benefits for the region. This Iberdrola project has transformed the municipality into an inclusive, resilient and internationally-oriented innovation ecosystem. Iberdrola is currently the market leader in the development of data centres , marketing more than 10 TWh to technology companies and data centre operators worldwide. Spain has significant potential in Europe for the development of data centres, thanks to its strategic geographical position, which has consolidated its status as the gateway for global data to the continent. It has also recently set up the company CPD4Green, which leverages its assets, capacity and experience to facilitate the development of sustainable data centres. CPD4Green has secured more than 700 megawatts (MW) in Spain and has a potential portfolio of another 5,000 MW. You can read the full story in Iberdrola Spain's Media Room . READ MORE

06/06/2025 - 14:03 UTC +02:00ScottishPower continues to advance research into the electrification of offshore wind operations in the United Kingdom Studies commissioned by ScottishPower Renewables, the renewable energy subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in the United Kingdom , reveal that offshore recharging of battery-powered vessels for offshore wind maintenance operations could be viable in future wind farms. The reports—by MJR Power & Automation and Oasis Marine—are the latest in a series of three studies exploring options for decarbonizing and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from offshore wind farm operations. The studies consolidate initial findings that the electrification of offshore operations is technically feasible using battery-powered service operation vessels (E-SOVs). The potential for decarbonizing offshore operations using electric crew transfer vessels (CTVs) that could be used for wind farms located closer to shore was also assessed, and the results confirmed that this is technically and operationally feasible. In both cases, wind farms will benefit environmentally and economically, with significant reductions in both greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs.
