Moving for Climate NOW

What is Moving for Climate Now?

Moving for Climate NOW is a cycling route, which, between 2015 and 2021, supported the Climate Summits (COPs) with the purpose of promoting alliances between people from different organizations to convey a message about the urgency of joining to accelerate climate action.

Moving for Climate NOW

Moving for Climate NOW was an initiative to create awareness at the international level on the importance of acting now against climate change.

It consists of a cycling expedition backed by Iberdrola which, between 2015 and 2021, departed from a symbolic city and ended in the region in which the UN’s Climate Summit was being held.

This route in electric bicycles consisted of a 7-10-day trip, during which participants had the opportunity to discuss climate action before arriving at the headquarters of the COP, where they delivered a manifesto. First it was Bilbao – Paris (COP21) in an initiative promoted by Iberdrola employees, and then, already under the motto of Moving for Climate NOW, Seville – Marrakech (COP22), Paris – Bonn (COP23), Vienna – Katowice (COP24), Salamanca – Madrid (COP25) and Edinburg – Glasgow (COP26).

The objective is to deliver a message stressing the need for unity and immediate action against climate change, promoting the transition towards a more efficient energy model that eliminates CO2 emissions. Every year the cycling route was combined with discussion sessions on specific themes. Thus, as well as pedalling, participants reflected on the different aspects of the climate challenge.

This Moving for Climate Action NOW alliance was a demonstration that global challenges like climate change require the joining of forces among diverse and different backgrounds, operating under the message to society of: Let’s all move, pulling all the levers right now.

The cycling route allowed to connect relevant actors in climate change from different nationalities and organizations (multilateral institutions, academics, environmental NGOs, policy makers, civil society, etc.), to build an inclusive, participatory and transparent dialogue, to show their action during the bike tour, and bring their voices to the Climate Summits to support and encourage the negotiating parties there to act with ambition and urgency.

This initiative, organised by Iberdrola, had always the strong institutional support of UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and the organising COP.

In all editions, Moving for Climate Now obtained the CeroCO2 label and the UN Climate Neutral NOW certificate, which certify it as a carbon neutral event.

Editions of Moving for Climate Now

Moving for Climate NOW completed its sixth edition in 2021, with the cycling team having already travelled more than 4,500 kilometres since the first one, which took them from Bilbao to COP21 in Paris in an initiative organized by employees of Iberdrola (Just2Challenge). In total more than 200 participants from more than 75 entities have been part of the Moving for Climate team.
