The largest monographic and interactive exhibition to date on the past, present and future of electricity is being made available to the public by Iberdrola. Titled An Electrifying Journey: An Iberdrola Immersive Experience , the exhibition will be open to visitors free of charge from 21 September to 20 October at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid. The exhibition invites visitors to discover the key milestones that have shaped the history of electrification , from the earliest scientific discoveries to the latest technological innovations, while virtual content offers a glimpse of what the cities of the future will look like in the “age of electricity”. With a strong educational focus, the initiative aims to spark young people’s curiosity about science and technology and inspire the next generation to pursue careers that will see them play a leading role in building this electric future. The public will also be able to explore the role electricity has played in socioeconomic development over the past 125 years through practical examples. The exhibition features historical content and interactive elements exploring the fundamentals of electricity and the evolution of electrical technology. Through immersive spaces, visitors will also be able to experience the profound transformation that electrification is bringing to cities, mobility and industry. Highlights of the exhibition include an immersive audiovisual experience using mixed-reality headsets, a museum featuring original pieces of significant technological and historical value linked to the development of the electricity system, live demonstrations that make electricity visible using a Tesla coil, and educational workshops for students and families. Through Iberdrola's history , the exhibition will also showcase some of the major milestones that have shaped the history of the electricity sector, from the first power plants to the expansion of renewable energy , smart grids , energy storage and the electrification of demand. Iberdrola — founded in 1901 as Hidroeléctrica Ibérica — is considered Europe’s largest electricity company and one of the two largest in the world by market capitalisation. Iberdrola’s executive chairman shared with the Pope his experience and commitment to sustainability, the fight against climate change, and decarbonisation, and explained how the electrification of the economy can help achieve these goals, together with greater energy self-sufficiency and autonomy. He also noted that the financial resources currently used to import fuels could instead be allocated to greater productive investment that supports economic and social growth. The executive chairman of Iberdrola presented the Pontiff with a copy of the book Tratos y contratos de mercaderes y tratantes (Dealings and Contracts of Merchants and Traders), by the 16th-century Spanish Dominican economist and philosopher Tomás de Mercado. The annual meeting brought energy leaders, academic experts, strategic partners and innovative companies together in Boston to drive technological solutions applied to the modernisation of the electricity network. Under the theme Demonstrate and Deploy, the forum focused on how to accelerate the transition from innovative ideas to their real deployment on the ground.
